Kia Stinger GT Vs Tesla Model 3

Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my car from a Camry V6. What I'm looking for is a fast, fun to drive, somewhat reliable RWD family sedan and so far, the Stinger and Model 3 Base are in my shortlist. Both brand news are within the $65 - 70k range so I think it's a fair comparison. I was eyeing for the VW Arteon/Tiguan R-line as well but they are not RWD and I don't feel confidence with German reliability. I am aware that the Stinger and Tesla might not be as reliable as a Toyota though. I will be doing around 15,000 km a year, with casual road trips, and I am planning to keep this car for 5 years.

I have test driven the new Stinger GT; and coming from a current gen Camry, I am very impressed with its power, interiors and technology. It comes with all the bell and whistles and also comes with 7 years warranty which are appealing. Cons: it is a $70k Kia, a bit overpowered for every day use and consumes a lot of petrol. The car that I test drove show 13.5L on average. I also heard stories about the rattles and paint quality issues as well but most seem to be covered under warranty.

I haven't yet test driven the Model 3 but from the photos, the exterior/interior seem a bit boring. I'm not sure if the ride and comfort quality will be on par with the Stinger?
Pros: I can charge from home with solar, save money on petrol and that seems to be more future proofing. I can also upgrade to auto-pilot in the future.
Cons: extremely simple interior, no HUD, glass roof (may be no good for Aussie summer?), shorter warranty, not sure if it will be good for roadtrip and whether panel gap, paint quality, software issue have been rectified in the latest model?

So which one would you pick? Is there any other recommendation? I appreciate all your inputs and also hope to receive some reviews from people who have owned/driven these vehicles.

***Updates after test driving the Tesla:
It has pretty good handling, fairly quiet, quick and has a nice infotainment. No panel gaps, quality issues. However, I wasn't as impressed like I had been in the Stinger. Here are why:
. The steering wheel looks and feels cheap (similar to an old Yaris);
. The seats are pretty firm and uncomfortable, especially at the back. The leathers aren't nice to touch. I took 2 friends in the back seats and they didn't like the seating position nor the firmness nor the space.
. There is no HUD and I had to always take my eyes off the road to look at the tiny speed indicator on the screen.
. Average trunk size and unfortunately, no spare tyre.
. The brake technology takes sometimes to get used to but it makes the ride feel rough. I would turn it off if I bought this car.
. Almost everything has to be done through the screen, even normal tasks like opening the glove box, adjusting the aircon and turning on wiper.
. Accelaration is quick but it lacks the characteristics.
. Weird way to opening the door.
. Only 4 years/80k km warranty.

I think this car will eventually evolve and be a good Corolla/A to B car replacement in the future (when EV becomes more affordable). I would certainly consider may be a model Y when I have kids (and need to save money). At the moment, I don't think many people who owns Corolla/Hybrid cars will consider spending double the price for a Tesla. The ride, handling is good but imo, the build quality, the comfort aren't up there like the new Stinger.
After testing out the Model 3, my missus straight up told me to buy a Stinger. I have placed my deposit and am looking to receive the Stinger in Ceramic Grey by end of the year.

Again guys, thank you for all your input.

Big fan of the Kia and stinger, but its' days our numbered. Which also won't help with resale.

I would get a model 3, if you can wait for the delivery time.

Not only do you get a cheaper car to run, you get over the air updates, Netflix, better resale, whilst also getting decent power and Rwd.

Yawn, another EV vs ICE vehicle discussion on OzBargain, give it a break!

An EV is one of the least boring cars you can buy, especially fast ones with good handling like Tesla's. They are an absolute pleasure to drive in all conditions, it even makes stop start city driving okay due to lack of engine noise, single pedal driving and effortless performance.

The instant electric power makes everything else feel slow - even the fastest dual clutch transmission ICEV's are sluggish compared to a single speed transmission + electric motor.

The problem with fast ICEV's is that you can't play unless you want to pay, fuel consumption skyrockets and hard driving wears out transmissions and ICE's quickly. You can stomp it everywhere in an EV and your cost increase is marginal because electricity is so cheap.

Ditto for wear - well designed solid state power electronics, electric motors and permanently meshed single speed transmissions basically don't wear out. The only variable is the battery, and with the 8 year warranty you shouldn't worry too much. Of course, regular vehicle components like suspension and tyres wear out like normal.

I was in the same position as you, cross shopping the stinger and the M3.

How much spirited driving do you do? The M3 has a low centre of gravity that provides suprisingly good handling, and the torque is pretty compelling as well. That said, I find that much of the power comes on from 60km/h to 120km/h, whereas 0-60 acceleration is a bit underwhelming. The Stinger is faster (4.9 seconds versus 6.1 for the M3) and you will feel the difference on an enthusiastic drive. Furthermore, while the Kia isn't exactly a thunderous V8 muscle car, the exhaust note will add to the overall driving experience, if you're into that sort of thing.

In the end, I chose the M3 over the Stinger because (a) I have an MX5 for weekend driving, and (b) it is a better value proposition when also supported by solar, and will likely retain its value far better than the Stinger. My guess is that only especially unique and sought after performance ICE vehicles will retain much value in the future as mass EV adoption spreads. Very few people will be looking to purchase an ICE vehicle in 5+ years time, and those that are will probably choose something a little more special than a fast four door KIA (like a W204 C63, for example).

FWIW I love the M3 - the acceleration in day-to-day driving is superbly smooth and effortless, the low and distributed centre of gravity makes cornering engaging, and the comfort of the cabin is a pleasure to sit in. I'm glad I went with the M3, but I might miss the Stinger more if I didn't have the MX5.

I went from a Holden SSV Redline to a Model 3 RWD.
Ever so slightly slower but so much more enjoyable to drive.
Take one for a test drive and you will never look back.
I had a friend looking at a variety of cars and had settled on a Audi RS3. Convinced him to drive mine. He ordered a tesla same day.
I've been in a stinger, and they are no where near as nice as the Tesla.

  • Hyundai I20N and pocket the change.

A fun car to drive should have a manual transmission. Both Kia and Tesla are good but too expensive.

    • Obviously, people have financial situations.

      • and some people don't find driving a manual on a daily basis 'fun' at all, despite what the hardcore enthusiasts would have the world believe.

"I haven't yet test driven the Model 3 but from the photos, the exterior/interior seem a bit boring" Hahahaha, a Camry owner saying something is boring.
The Camry is the epitome of boring so those are some fighting words!

Out of those two I'd probably take the Tesla, however i'd refuse to get on the forums as the worst part about Tesla's are often (but not always) the owners from those I've met.

As a wild card I'd say find a nice 2nd hand SQ5, those are a surprising about of fun for what it is.

  • Good question. I'd be comparing those too. Also had the last "Commodore", v6 4wd top-spec. on my list.
    - Kia preferred for the quality and warranty and easy access to dealer.
    - Tesla preferred for the low fuel costs and cool factor.
I think I'd choose the Kia to avoid the unknown.
For me towing became a factor so none of the above.

Tesla has amazing build quality and will pay for itself once the robotaxi software comes out soon.

Also you don't have to deal with stealerships because Tesla offer their legendary service straight to you.

Had a Stinger for 3 years, the purchase and service experiences were all terrible. I have tried 3 different dealers for service. My car had a number of issues like brake shudder, headlight condensation, roof rattle, trim fading, diff whine. I had to visit the service centre so many times (like 5 times alone just to fix the headlight), I knew all the service techs+receptionist by name. For the rest of the warranty issues, I really needed to push the dealer to have them fixed under warranty.

Stinger as a sports sedan, it's super compromised as a everyday car (loud and it rides terrible imo, I heard the ride is better with the later update) and it's not that much fun/engaging to drive (unless you are drifting it) and to listen to. I feel as an overall package, the Model 3 is a lot lot better if you are doing a ton of miles in it, and it's a lot better daily.

After the Stinger ownership, I learnt that a long warranty doesn't mean shit if it's a pain in the ass to get stuff fixed, and it's better to just buy a weekend car if you want something that's proper capable/fun to drive. I don't miss the Stinger at all after selling it.

    • what car are you driving now?

      • company car as a daily (Kia SUV). I'm looking at either Mustang (2024), GR corolla, or i30N as a weekend car. I bought a 06 Lexus GS430 while I wait for those. Its very similar to the Stinger but does most things better (quieter, great ride, V8 noise) and cost next to nothing to buy.

go with a tesla 3. it will hold its value far better than a kia.

  • Not looking at EV6? Id get that over Model 3. If after a sports car though, Stinger way to go.

NB I was looking at stinger myself but cant justify nowdays as WFH

    • +2

Beautiful car but if I have to buy an EV, it's gotta be a Tesla. Better value, software and charging network.

      • -2

I personnly wouldnt touch the Tesla due to the way they do things, the fit and finish as well….and im not sure why you like the software better, Im not sure thats the case especially the buttons vs touchscreen - I hate using a touchscreen for basic functions that should be a dial you can select without looking off the road.

Horses for courses, of course but if I was going electric id be looking at Polestar 2 vs EV6

      • Worst build quality evah

  • +3

The user experience of a petrol vehicle is going to a petrol station every week or so to fill up. It's not the most pleasant experience or good use of your time.

EV's you have a full tank every time you leave the house in the morning.

  • +1

Can't imagine buying a new petrol car in 2022 lol

    • +2

As far as I know, heaps of people are still placing new orders for the RAV4 and have to wait till 2024. I don't think petrol car is going away anytime soon. May be the turning point will be in 5 years?

    • Such a stupid comment

There are less than 10 fully EV cars on the market in Australia and all have a stupid long wait times

So tell me again whos stupid, the person who needs a car and will wait 12months plus and struggle until it arrives or the person who just gets on with it and get a car that suits their needs now?

  • +3

I have a hard time to recommend any other cars if you are spending 60-70k other than the model 3 personally…..too much going for it

  • -1

    Eww Kia Stinger. 😂

  • +1

EV's are at a turning point IMO

The range, the technology, the evolution and most importantly, the competition will make the current lineup seem like dinosaurs in just a year or 2

I know a lot of diehard Tesla owners jumping ship to Porsche, BMW and even Korean EV offerings now

    • Such an important comment

Todays electric cars are the first iterations

Just wait a few years and they will be so different.

Think of todays electric cars like solar panels 5 years ago (bigger bulkier more expensive less powerful)

    Tesla

  • +4

    Get Polestar
FK tesla and Elon Musk. Someone needs to French revolution that tool.

  • Maybe hold out a couple more years for the Kia EV8 …… https://www.koreancarnews.com/post/kia-ev8-is-to-be-the-stin…

    Best of both worlds.

  • Had a Kia for nearly 7 years. Good for the first year then problems. Head unit failure - replaced twice. Engine failure, needed full replacement at 70k and took 5 months & had to argue for a hire car. Headlight bulbs kept blowing, replaced 3 times. Antenna fell off and replaced.

They we ok to deal with but it was just a waste of time fixing things. Sold it a few months before the warranty ended.

    • What model and year was your car? I have a mechanic friend who said the new Kia/Hyundai built from 2016 are much much better.

      • It was a 2015 Cerato. Hopefully the new ones are built better!

  • I'd go the Kia Stinger because its beautifully kitted out with a really nice interior and you can get those gorgeous Nappa leather chairs. I think the size of the car and the comfortable seats would make a great car for casual road trips. The Tesla 3 is better suiting for commuting or city driving as its a bit more spartan and you cant really go for a big drive without worrying about where to recharge it.

  • I was debating the very same question & when I visited the Kia dealer last month they were asking over 80k for the Stringer GT if i want one now or wait 10 months & also had terrible customer service. I didn't feel welcomed at all.

I have my test drive for the Model 3 LR this Saturday.. I got a call yesterday from the Tesla girl to confirm the test drive & she pretty much spent 40 mins explaining everything to me & gave me her direct number & told me to call her anytime if I have anymore questions.

The wait times going to hurt but I can't wait to get my Tesla!

Goodluck with your decision.. Both are nice cars!

    • Thanks. Did you test drive the Stinger? What do you think?

      • No they wouldn't let me. They said if I want to test drive I need to buy it because they didn't have any stinger demo model to test drive. Terrible customer service.

I test drove the Tesla yesterday & did put in my order. It was a no brainer soon as I stepped on the accelerator.

    • Whats the delivery time on a model 3, like next year

      • 9-12 months but gives me time to sort out the home charging & purchasing any must have accessories so I'm well prepared for the baby.

  • I stopped reading after I saw, "I don't feel confidence with German reliability." All the best.

    • after owning bmw mercedes and audi i have no problem with that at all

no finer feeling that having a brand new german car flatbedded a day after delivery

      • What on earth!? So unlucky!? Out of interest what was the reason for this?

        • poor pre delivery preparation but what do you expect from Marshalls who seem to be a very high volume dealer

i'm being facetious… even toyotas have odd issues but as a whole i've had much more reliable experiences with honda, nissan, toyota to no ones surprise

i'm of the mindset that euro cars are often enthusiast purchases so expect some odd issues that are a part of luxury slash performance motoring

  • strange comparison

the GT uses 15 litres per 100 around town

    the Model 3??? yeah…

    • +1

But the Stinger doesnt consume anywhere near as much electricity as the Tesla.

      • Joke? ;)

      • +1

The stinger isnt held together with moulding from home depot either

And im sure the stingers panels line up correctly

        • +1

Tesla tech is undeniably excellent but the build quality and style of the car are shoddy at best.

Tesla needs someone from Toyota/Hyundai to work on build quality and someone from Alfa to work in the styling.

  • If you have money to throw away on petrol, get the Stinger
If you just want to buy a car and just change tyres after shredding them, get the Tesla. In the summer, turn on the AC; the Tesla has a big enough battery to run it

  • +2

I have a Kia Stinger GT 2019, best car I've owned. It is amazing. I have a Tesla on order, I am so worried as the quality and fun to drive of the Stinger is amazing. I just hope Tessie will be OK, I want a battery care that is fun so went Tesla for replacement. Just know after 3 years with Kia Stinger, AMAZING. I figure if I hate Tesla I will sell and get another Stinger

  • OP, with the Kia Stinger, at least if you're selling it after 5 yrs there will still be 2 years factory warranty left for the next owner.

One other suggestion though - look at the Hyundai IONIQ 5. I'm pretty sure it's around your budget, and the 2WD version is RWD :-) Sweet car!!

Bought the Model 3 and took delivery in Feb. Have done 5000km since then and I personally could not vouch for it more. It takes some getting used to in terms of the smarts, but to me it feels akin to going from a Nokia to an iPhone. Take it for a test drive, I'd say your choice will be clear enough after that (even if that's the Stinger). I also haven't paid for fuel once in 5000km, thanks to NRMA chargers, my Data Center and many of the places I've stayed all providing free charging. Instant torque is no joke and even the base Model 3 will destroy the Stinger in terms of performance plus you have a quiet ride with excellent audio. Also check the servicing intervals between the two and read some of the long term ownership cost breakdowns, and factor in the LFP battery for the base model lasting longer than most of them and less fire risk to boot. The biggest factor will be if you can wait the excruciatingly long time for delivery (wait times were 12 months the last I checked)

One day I drove past a Tesla showroom and thought wth I'll go see if I can have a test drive. I ended up purchasing one and have been driving it for the past 5 months, love it. I realised early on that the wait times would only begin to get longer so I snapped it up quick, and only waited 4 weeks for delivery, it's up to 12 months now I believe so that will probably pay a factor in your decision. I thought it was exceedingly nice to drive and it was more comfortable than my old car (Subaru WRX). I previously hadn't really liked the look but when I got up close I changed my mind, and personallly I like the simple and clean interior. The M3P is very fast if you're into that. I've never driven a Stinger so I have no way of comparing the two. The other cars I had been considering were BMW 340i or BMW M3, but theyre a bit more on the expensive side. Regardless if it were me I would go for the M3.

    • if it were you you'd go the Tesla though, like you did..?

  • I've only heard rave reviews from owners of Telsas, apparently amazing to drive (or not).

Take one for a test drive and make your decision, don't think you can go wrong with either tbh.

  • I'm still confused as to why people compare a performance car to a mostly regular electric hatchback beyond the 0-100 time. The Stinger will be better built, better to drive, better equipped, MUCH bigger and cheaper (unless you buy the pov pack tesla).

In my experience not a lot of people who enjoy driving buy Teslas. This doesn't mean they aren't good to drive but it does mean if someone raves about one it's worth checking what vehicles they have previously owned (admittedly worth checking this with anyone).

    • I came from a GTI if that colours your preconceptions more favourably. I beg to differ though and believe you are speaking to people with too much skin in the game or have rigid views. The various forums and discord servers are full of people moving from performance cars to the Model 3 (it’s hardly a cheap car afterall) and in my experience at least, almost emphatically they all agree the Model 3 is an engineering marvel that is stupid fun to drive. Go watch the moose test for the model 3 if you think it’s not capable beyond a straight line. This isn’t to say the car couldn’t be improved and that there aren’t cars which are going to me more fun under certain conditions but the Model 3 holds its own and for the price it’s a tonne of fun to drive. Personally I think people who TRULY love to drive, don’t care if the fuel comes from petrol or electrons, the fact of the matter is that ICE has hit diminishing returns and even brands such as Porsche and Ferrari have recognised this fact. It’s more than the green movement, in so many ways EVs allow us to extract more performance than their ICE counterparts and do things that were not feasible before.

  • Damn did not know a stinger would cost $70k. Thought it was cheap and therefore chosen for WA police vehicles.
