Bad boys at the good guys

Just seems to be getting cheaper hey?

  • I often wonder how these compare to machines like the Rancilio ?

    • +2

Less reliable/poorer build quality, significantly more/better features.

      • +1

Yep this sums it up well. The comparable rancilio dual boiler is approx $2500+.

      • +2

ok, thanks. Our Rancilio is still going strong after more then 10 years and nary an issue. It gets used most days of the week.

        • +1

same here my rancilio refuses to die i've been waiting for an upgrade for many years lol

          • +1

@cktftw: Yeah my understanding is those things are built like tanks, so you might be waiting a while yet..

    • depends which model rancilio, the breville can make coffee and froth milk at the same time, entry level rancilio can’t , need to switch boiler temperature …..don’t think i would ever go back to not being able to make coffee and froth milk at the same time …. we don’t drink black coffee in our household.

      • +1

Yeah I kinda get that advantage, ours is a single boiler only but to be fair, finish the shot, turn the steam wand switch on, empty the group head, get milk out, get jug out, and the steam wand is then good to go. So in workflow terms not an issue. Not sure I even see the advantage of a dual boiler to be honest but I would get one I suppose if our machine does clap out one day.

I was just curious how these compare, so thanks for the feedback

        • +1

i used to have sunbeam dual thermoblock and decided to upgrade to the breville dual boiler ….. quality of the coffee is about the same ….. didn’t have any faults with the sunbeam (5 years) which i gave to a friend and is till going strong, no faults with the breville (3 years) …. breville are crazy prices now ….think the sunbeam is still in the $600s sometimes ….. i have at one stage owned small rancilios ….. a miss audrey and also the silvia …..if i was spending $700 i would get the sunbeam ….. if i was spending g $900 i’d get the breville ….got my breville before covid was about $650 without grinder …..won’t see that price for a while …..

I switched from this Breville and Smart Grinder Pro to a Gaggia Classic Pro (9bar mod) and Niche Zero Grinder. Both good but for espresso the Gaggia + Niche wins. If you're making lots of milk drinks one after the other, the Breville is probably the winner. For me though the Breville is massive and takes up a heap of bench space so I'd rather sacrifice a few features for the smaller footprint of a Gaggia/Lelit/Rancilio. Also working around deficiencies to ultimately make exactly the same quality if not better espresso shot is kind of fun and probably makes you better at what you're doing. IMO of course, this is all subjective.

Edit: My Breville was replaced once within 30 days of purchase because it would switch off immediately when you turn it on, and a friend of mine has the exact same problem. The second one lasted 6 years and didn't miss a beat.

      • You would want better coffee out of that Gaggia/Niche combo.. the Niche grinder is $1500 - $1900 on its own…

        • If you're buying from Australian retailers*

IF you can grab one from the UK, I think including shipping etc it's closer to ~$1100. Comparable money to the BDB and SGP.

          • @NedStark102: I don't know why I got a downvote for stating the obvious massive price difference between those grinders?…

            • @OzViper: Me neither mate - I didn't downvote you. I was simply saying that the total cost of BDB + SGP is actually comparable to a Gaggia Classic + Niche (depending on where you get them).

  • +1

I purchased this machine 5 years ago for $800

Can't believe it's still the same price today

Amazing machine, hasn't missed a beat

    • You got lucky, our 5.4 year one was repaired 4 times in last 2 years and needed a 5th when I sold it to my local coffee tech guy for $250 last week, and got a new one for $897 on GGC.
First one was $1087 with grinder, grinder still going strong lol.

      • $897 was a good deal. Your old machine must be in good condition if a coffee tech guy was willing to pay that amount of money for it.

        • Yeah looked in good condition, he was going to fix it and use it as a loaner, was the triad board again he probably would of fixed it for nicks as was only replaced last June, but had been in for another part a few months ago. He says they are great coffee making machines but break down a lot, he had 4 in when I was there. Was fine for 3 years.

      • considering doing this if i can get it for 899.
had it repaired twice in the last two years for circa 400 each time.

        • wow 400, mine were only $80-150

        • What was wrong with it?

          • +1

@TightAssDrake: too many things to remember lol

            • @[Deactivated]: For my experience $400 bill from authorised service centre usually is 50% labor and 50% parts. Parts prices are not the lowest too. Don't remember exact prices since it was done under the warranty but I had pump for around $100, steam valve for around $100, o-rings for few bucks each, plus labor making it $400+ easily.

              • @SickDmith: Ok, my local guy is not a authorised service centre, but fixes all types of machines. I took the 5 years warranty from good guys, even he said was a good idea lol
He had 4 in for repair i sold him my old one.

                • @[Deactivated]:

I took the 5 years warranty

                  Good decision. Highly recommended.
I was told Product Care stopped selling extended warranty for espresso machines because of having too many claims. :)

  • I have a strong feeling the Bambino Plus is going to be on sale soon too. I just ran out of patience and bought one, so it'll probably drop about $100.

    • What did you pay for it? We almost got a Bambino Plus but ended up with a Dedica, because we already had a Breville pod machine with an equivalent auto-steam-wand so didn't need that.

      • I paid full price. I'm ashamed! I think it was about $520. According to camel they come down to about $399 if you want.

Be aware tho that you'll "need" to buy yourself a decent basked for $40 to $80 if you've got a decent grinder and you want to do things properly. They come with pressurised baskets, which are great if you want to use pre-ground coffee and not worry about stuff, but not great if yiou're grinding your own beans.

Not 100% sure if that basked will fit in the portafolter without some "modification" yet - it's still on its way.

        • Full price is actually $699, so you didn't do too badly! Yeah a pressurised basket is a must.

        • +1

Forgive my ignorance but with the basket are you talking about the single wall filter cups, in which case Breville seems to have them at a decent price.

          https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/espresso/parts-acces…

The shipping adds a bit so we just bought a lot of cleaner tablets.

          • @try2bhelpful: No, if you google "coffee filter basket" you'll see what I mean. It's the thing you put the ground coffee into in the portafilter (also google that to see what I'm talking about if you need).

The Bambino Plus comes with pressurised ones. Apparenly coffee people tell you you need unpressurised ones? I don't know much about it.

          • @try2bhelpful: Yeah that's them. Definitely makes sense to get the Breville ones as they (I assume) will fit in the portafilter.

            • @theguyrules: I don’t know why but the direct from Breville ones seem to be a lot cheaper than elsewhere and, basically, what I would expect them to cost.

          • @try2bhelpful: Yes its called Filter 2 Cup Single Wall for $8.95 or if you make single shot, get the singe shot (1 cup) as well.

        • Filter 2 Cup Single Wall is $8.95 from Breville, not $40-$80, don't spread misinformation.

          • @huntabargain: You can buy a $9 basket to go with a $500 machine, you can also buy a $30 basket and get better coffee. You can spend up to $80 easily and even higher if you really want to, but I'm not sure there's much improvement in coffee over the $30 to $40 options.

If you want to cheap out on the basket filter, that's fine, but don't accuse others of spreading misinformation. That's like saying "You can get a grinder for $70 on the breville website". Yes, you can. Doesn't mean that you won't benefit from a $200 grinder.

If you'd said "I personally think you get just fine coffee from the $8.95 breville basket filter" then sure, you wouldn't be obnoxiously rude, we'd just disagree. But you didn't, did you?

            • @Joker042: If you buy Breville dual boiler machine or even Oracle for $1200 to $3000 it comes with 2 sets of single wall and 2 sets of double wall baskets. If you buy Bambino plus for $500 it comes with 2 sets of double wall baskets, so you just need to buy the same Breville single wall for $8.95. Its simple as it's designed for it, but to tell someone you need to spend $80 for a basket that more likely wont work with Breville 54mm portafilter and might leak or not fit at all is not a good advice to give! But good luck with your $80 purchase hope it works for you..

              • @huntabargain: Firstly, there are $30 baskets which work with the Breville 54mm portafilter, with many people confirming it. You may want to be careful about spreading misinformation, I hear some people around here frown on that. There are a lot of people on OzBargin who talk out of their ass about things they don't know about. I don't doubt you're an expert though and that you've confirmed that there are no options which work with the Breville portafilter - contrary to all other advice.

Secondly, I'm happy with a $30 portafilter, I don't feel the need to buy an $80 one.

                Have a great day.

                • @Joker042: I am very happy with my Italian made double boiler machine and Eureka Specialita grinder. If someone bought Hyundai car and tell them to buy Porche tyres to fit it in to get a Porche performance, then one might call that naive. The original question by try2bhelpful was about Breville single walled basket with a link to Breville site and you categorically told him (No it is the wrong part).
I am off to have a cappuccino, too much BS here.

                  Wonder who just said this:
The Bambino Plus comes with pressurised ones. Apparenly coffee people tell you you need unpressurised ones? I don't know much about it.

Not 100% sure if that basked will fit in the portafolter without some "modification" yet - it's still on its way.

    • Bambino is a great entry level machine.

      • Thanks. It looks perfect for me - I don't want to be a professional, but I want to be able to make great coffee for a decent price. I might outgrow it in a few years, but I think I'll be happy for a while.

        • Just be aware that the Bambino (and many lower end breville machines, use a non standard 54mm portafilter.. so harder to get accessories and coffee recipes (ie dose) will be different to a standard 58mm portafilter. But if you are just starting out it is probably not as important..

          • @OzViper: You're right, there aren't as many options, but since Breville is so popular they're mostly out there if you look. The basket I bough doesn't have a "rimmed" version, which is annoying, but other brands do.

            Good callout though.

            • +1

@Joker042: Yep you should be fine, just don't go crazy buying extras (Bottomless portafilters, WDTs, fancy Tampers etc) for it if you plan to upgrade to a better machine down the track as you won't be able to carry them over to a 58mm machine.

  • so how much store credit do you get from this

    • $100

      • wow Thanks for telling me. it said up to 100 so I was wondering how much I would get. where does it say though? can you help me locate it?

  • Can I pay with gift cards in store, with the Click and Collect option?

  • +2

ok if you need a grinder could put the $100 towards it, $249 with amazon etc price match, so $149 plus $999 = $1148. I paid $1079 for my original combo 5.4 years ago. $69 covid tax is not bad lol

  • Any recommendations for a fairly portable grinder?

My smart grinder just died, sounds like motor is siezed inside and slight burning smell but we will be travelling a lot next year and I'll be taking my aeropress so just really need a smallish/portable grinder for that and isn't worth getting anything major now for the main machine.

    • Good bench grinder is either heavy or expensive (or both).
Have you considered manual grinder? If you drink a lot of espresso this would be a good workout too. :)

  • Anyone got myer to pricematch?

    • Why price match at myer when you can get further $100 store credit from click & collect at good guys?

  • I bought from GG, using gift cards on eBay, the machine is beefy, had Breville Pro before and a 100$ delonghi lol

The only issue I see is that for a single cup per day, it's a monster.

The positive side is, I never buy coffee outside now. Whenever I do, it disappoints me so much that I feel every penny I paid is worth having the setup at home.

The best part, I get to be a barista when friends show up 😂

    • Easy fix, drink more coffee :) or you also can have mocha and frothed hot chocolate.

      • 😂 Or have more guests lol

I started serving milk options too, almond, oat and premium milk from top sellers.

        What else?

Started 3d printing tools like WDT and custom hopper lol

Also, have a coffee circle lol share best beans deals. Still a monster for me lol

This is more like a semi commercial machine.

        • after over 5 years with one those breville pro's look too small in store lol

  • +1

This is one of the best machines for the price without a doubt. There are a few owners support groups online who have hacked and customised this machine to do pro-level stuff like flow control. Plus, unlike so many gadgets today, you can get replacement parts easily to service and repair yourself if it needs it down the track.

I've had mine for maybe 6 years now and it has always made superb coffee. You will however need a bit of skill.

One of the few owners threads here:

    https://coffeesnobs.com.au/forum/equipment/brewing-equipment…

    • Flow control, isn't it to compensate for a badly prepared Puck? I need to visit the forum, make friends. Thanks

      • Flow control is different from pre-infusion. It controls how much brew water comes to the grouphead, during the entire extraction period. I am not sure if it is a fancy feature to have or how different in flavour you will get, but note that this mod will disable the hotwater coming out from the hot water wand and will void your warranty.

        • and will void your warranty.

If you are careful enough you can connect things back without any marks. ;)

          • @SickDmith: Have you done the mod? If so what is your technique for using the flow control, as I seen different methods, high flow then low, then high, as I seen different ways and no clear methodology or what would people trying to achieve. I looked at couple of reviews on youtube when I was thinking to buy/include flow control with my new machine, but I was not convinced of what benefits you get, so binned the idea.

  • called their national sale team, request to match the same price and they did. so just paid 899 for the dual boiler machine , actually even better as not a store credit. whoever need the grinder, they can also match the price with myer or amazon with extra 10 discount. so 899 for the dual boiler machine and 239 for the smart grinder pro, not a bad deal ^_^

    • What did you get them to price match to?

      • Online show as 999 with 100 store credit if requested to pick up in store. While most of the store have no stock now and only those regional area have.

    • Which national sales team? Good Guys? Why would they price match themselves when no one else has a better offer? Or did you call a different store?

      • +1

It’s good guys national sales team, it’s the same 1300 number, normally you asked to input the postcode and will direct you to the near store. However if the store busy or after business hour, it will direct to this team which is based in Perth and operate till 9pm Sydney time.

        • Cool, learned something new.

I'm very much interested in the Dual Boiler, but also very much wanting a black one. Not the Black Sesame (shiny), but the Black Truffle (matt). I think the Black Truffle is only available in the Dynamic Duo combo. Harvey Norman has the Black Truffle combo on clearance for $1,799, it's the right colour but not the right price. Domayne is slightly cheaper $1,699, still a premium considering the grinder is only $250, less if I try to sell it privately, may be $200. That makes the machine $1,500.

Would have jumped on this deal if the colour is right.

    • managed to get one for $950 click and collect.

  • Do you need to pay delivery cost 35 aud after price match?

    • I managed to get them to waived the $35 shipping cost

      • 899 delivered?

        • +1

yes I brought the grinder at 239 as well

  • I have an older unit that plays up, sometimes it pumps out water and sometimes it doesnt, anyone know what could be wrong with it?
    The steamer works OK

    • You bought new machine right?
Put the blind basket and check pressure reading.

  • +1

I just bought one for $899 (excl gift cards)

Then i bought eureka specialita from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/685305

I did my research and the eureka specialita is the best for espresso grinding.

    • +1

you did well with both items, quality grinder makes big difference.

      • +1

Yes. The normcore guys taught me that. Grinder matters for consistency and great taste.

So i did a research of great espresso grinder. Spend $300more than breville, but wont have to upgrade for years

Currently im using delonghi magnifica S. Looking forward to receiving both machine and grinder :)
