  • What's the price?

  • Would you mind telling us the price?

  • Sorry. This is my first post and did not realized I did not post the price. It is $189 with free pickup on their store locations or + shipping.

    • With no extra interfaces, this Buffalo drive is more costly than a similarly large Seagate, that we paid $159 for (at Big W, I think).

$30 more + shipping (for many/most of us) for USB 3.0 seems excessive to me.

USB 3.0 is No Longer a Premium feature… it's been on the market for far too long already for that. :-/

Anybody want to guess how much shipping will be?

PS For those who insist on buying these… try buying MORE THAN ONE, ie, to decrease the per-item shipping fees.

It worked with N40L's, so I suppose it's worth a go with these things, purchased in Qty 2 or more (why not buy a case & split it with mates, to save…? :-)

      • Can you provide a link to that Seagate?

        I doubt it exists.

        • I don't know about Big W, but this one looks similar:

Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive $155.55 Delivered from Amazon

        • +2

Thats from the US…warranty is a pain.

        • Love 'em or hate 'em, gotta hand it to MSY on some prices: http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8952 FWIW, I think Centrecom have the same price.

If you're just gonna scavenge the internal drive inside for your HP Microservers like most OzB'ers ATM, then $169 isn't a bad deal I suppose for local stock; but if you really want the external/USB3.0 features then it looks like this Buffalo isn't extinct yet! ;)

        • +1

I'm just looking for the best value for money external hard drive.

Taking them out of the case generally voids the warranty so I won't be doing that.

Also I avoid seagates of that model, they all run too hot as there is no ventilation for the hard drive. (I own two)

        • http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/68508 Good news on the internal warranty front from ozzieDuck it seems:

The drive I had in mine was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS. Surprisingly the internal drive passes the Warranty validation on the Seagate site, in warranty until June 2014!

Yep, the enclosures for that model Seagate are pretty poor. Pity you missed the Goflex Desk 3TB deal @ $199 from OLC a while back, the ventilation in those is superior to the expansion line; mine's still powering on, chock full'o pr0n…er I mean legitimate backup files! I grabbed one of the DSE $79 1TB USB3.0 ones recently, now I have the option of USB3.0 or gigabit ethernet (NAS) on the 3TB, and a cheap 1TB for my microserver! ;)

  • not bad seeing as msy has the WD green for $187, so $2 for a usb 3 chasis
and USB seagate for 179, seems like a good deal

  • Thats cheap hey

  • I can't seem to find any info on whether it is USB powered or not.

Is it safe to assume it is mains powered then?

  • Anyone seen any of these with wifi, ethernet, USB3, >2TB, like the WD personal cloud storage

    • cheaper to build ur own nas rather use stuff like WD cloud.

  • Might last till next summer:

    Max Operating Temperature
    35 °C
    Limited warranty - 1 year

  • Unlike other Buffalo ext drives, I see -no- hint as to the speed of the drive itself… -is- it 7200 RPM?

'dunno & the Buffalo web site give -no- info, so I must conclude it's slower than 7200 RPM.

    Anyone know?

    • It usually is a slower drive but it probably won't matter anyway since it's very likely the USB3.0 port becomes the bottleneck.

      • Was true with USB2, but I wouldn't have thought that USB3 was yet the limiting factor when it came to external HDD performance (it can easily push 150+MBytes/sec).

  • Just curious, my cousin came home with a buffalo 2TB USB3.0 drive and I can't seem to find much info on it, does anyone know what manufacturer supplies the HDDs to Buffalo? does it have a W.D. drive/Seagate drive/Hitachi drive or Toshiba drive?

    • If you get your cousin to plug the drive into a computer, and then use any form of PC analysis program, and then you will know. But otherwise, you could open it up and take a look, I guess :-)

  • I've always wondered, what the hell drives are in these Buffalos? No one's ever seemed to have opened one up and checked the serial number.
