This is a great price for a USB 3.0 3TB Hard-drive because it is all you will need for the rest of your life it's that big!
It transfers data so quickly with the USB 3.0 connection, so I can't bear the slow USB 2.0 connection anymore.

Seemed like a good price. I bought one. However I have now reached an age where I feel that it may not the last external hard drive I will ever need. Call me a "hard drive half empty" kind of guy.

    • +9

I think that part was a joke, in the grand tradition of "640k RAM ought to be enough for anybody!"

  • The price is right for me, I'd pick one up if I didn't just buy some hard drives recently. But unless I die within the next couple of years, I think I might be needing more than that.

  • +1

    Price is good.
    - According to the specs, the drive is a 7200RPM
    - The Transformer (power supply) is most probably US only, but couldn't confirm this
    - I read -one- review that said the speed of this USB3 drive was the same as the WD USB2 drive
    - I found a number of negative comments on this drive… Read the reviews before buying

    • +3

I was just about to buy one but noticed the appalling reviews…NO THANK YOU!

    • +3

Bought a similar Seagate portable HDD 1TB USB 2.0 a while ago and it's dead just after one month use.
There's continuous strange clutching sound which i reckon the drive motor or disk read head is broken.
Returned and promised to myself won't use Seagate again.

    • +4

Regular as clockwork, anytime someone posts a deal about a Seagate HDD, a poster or two will show up with a scare-mongering fable about how they drive took out all of their treasured family memories or how "unreliable" they are.

The average failure rate amongst all the major manufacturers is as near as makes no difference. Seagate's firmware problems from 2007 with the 7200.11 Barracuda's have seriously stained their image and this continuing mass hysteria about the "Click of Death" and other assorted buzz words is being perpetuated by either clueless fanboys or just computer illiterates.

      Stop embarrassing yourselves.

      • Would vote +1,000,000,000 to this comment if i could.

      • Personally, of the five external/portable drive I've bought in recent years my Seagate drive experienced problems faster than any other and is the only one that's currently dead.

        http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STA…

When there's such a high proportion of negative reviews on a product it's normal to think twice about making a purchase as other users have rightly said.

        http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-reliability-failure-…
Amar89 you're kidding yourself if you rely on manufacturer published RETURN rates to support your bashing of other users; heck I know I didn't bother returning mine. By the way did you read this part of the article "Alright, so the data really tells us nothing about reliability"?.

        • I believe the problem lies more to the USB chip board + power & enclosure these drives use, more than the internal drive itself.

          Seagate is still very reliable!

  • +4

Pretty good price, but this drive has so many bad reviews I could never feel confident my data would be safe.

    • +4

Yeah i agree, I read those reviews and man, wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole (guess that should be a 3m pole)

      • +1

It's worth noting that many of those reviews date back to the original 7200.12 firmware/click of death issues…new firmware resolved the problem well over a year ago! ;)

  • +5

3TB for the rest of my life? Get real.

    • +6

I think that was actually a joke.

      • I hope it was. I have 8TB and grabbing another 3TB soon.

  • I agree good price. Not sure about quality but 155$ for usb3 3tb external is good.

  • +2

you had me $155 … bought 3 of them

    • +1

      For the Microserver ?

      • 'dunno if the HP uSevers have USB 3.0

But, while you -could- plug it in, make sure your NAS software won't want it to ALWAYS be plugged-in.

Some have suggested that - once you give, eg, FreeNAS - a drive… it thinks it owns it.

Check this "rumour" out before plugging-in. ;-)

      • na just gonna rip it out of the case, they are terrabad

  • Frankly, I -wouldn't- want all my "memory" eggs in -one- basket (ie, this 3 TB drive)…

ESPECIALLY if it have been handled SO MANY TIMES, ie, because it had been shipped from USA to AU.

I know they're designed to endure some bumps… the Q is how many, how hard would the "knocks" be, & do -more- bumps mean -less- reliability &/or a -shorter- operating life, -before- failure?

Step up to the table, folks, & roll your dice… :-/

    I'll buy locally…

PS We -have- seen similar pricing on OzB before for the same product…

We'll surely see similar or even BETTER offers again.

    • +1

Curious to know -why- you type like that.

    • Buy 2. 1 for data 1 for backup or Buy 4. 2 for mirrored data, and 2 for mirrored backup.

  • Got one last time at similar price, no issues. There are a lot of ocmments about reliability etc on these though

  • +2

I got 2 of these some time back when they were 119 each or something like that, busted them out of the case and found Barracuda XT ST33000651AS drives. Currently, these drives cost anywhere from $390 to $640 each (WTF?) according to statice: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=ST33000651A…

Who knows what drive it ships with now, there appears to be cheaper 3TB seagate drives out there: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=seagate+3tb… so maybe that's what's in them now.

I haven't a clue what the difference between the ST33000651AS drive and the cheaper ST3000DM001 is, they're both 7200rpm so neither are green drives. They both have 64mb of cache. Hrm, dunno.

The cases are crap, the drives get too hot which is why they fail. If you do some googling, you'll find that the drive in a failed unit is probably ok, but the controller in the case has cooked and died.

    • +2

I got a batch of these last time.
3 x USB 2.0 and 2 X USB3 and opened them all up for my NAS.
I got 1 x ST33000651AS XT from the USB 2.0 version and the rest were ST3000DM001

The main differences are the newer ST3000DM001 has 3 X 1TB platter to make up 3TB whereas the ST33000651AS XT has 5 X 600GB platter. The newer ST3000DM001 seems to be faster afaik. I think because Seagate stopped making the ST33000651AS and people are looking for these to extend their hardware raids making the drive more expensive then its newer brother ST3000DM001.

      • I knew there would be a difference, just couldn't be bothered looking long enough to work it out, thanks for following up and letting us all know.

I had a feeling the current batches would come with the ST3000DM001, no surprise there. Hope it turns out to be a solid drive, seagate should be over all their .11 issues by now with any luck and back to making good gear. I've not had any issues at all with the two ST33000651AS drives, but now that I've said that …

I too have mine in my microserver, was by far the cheapest way of adding a decent amount of space. Considering getting more to take it to 5x3TB as it currently has 2x3 and 2x2 in it along with the smaller boot drive. I'm not sure I can have a 3TB as the boot drive though, it's a different controller to the other 4 I believe and I just don't know if it can handle above 2TB or not.

"it is all you will need for the rest of your life it's that big!" lol

    • +4

      I only need 640k!

    • +6

That's what I told my woman…like you she LOL'd too.

  • -2

because it is all you will need for the rest of your life it's that big!

    sarcasm ???

  • +1

"because it is all you will need for the rest of your life it's that big!"

I remember people used to say that when 20GB HDD was first released.

    • +14

You obviously don't have a family and HD camcorders and cameras…

    • +7

      download and stream EVERYTIME… ?
If you wanted to watch it again with family/friends ?
ISP speeds/quotas in Australia are not so great.
Store …. and then backup the storage :D

      Mod: Removed rep tag

    • +1

You're joking right? Such an ignorant comment. Two quick examples:
      My camera:
Each photo I take uses 30MB of space on my hard drive. Plus my camera also records 1080p video which uses up about 160MB per minute (just under 10GB per hour).

      Games:
Just in my Steam folder alone I have 174GB of games installed (there are other that are not installed at the moment as well). And this is just my Steam folder, this does not include all of the other LEGALLY ACQUIRED games I have on my hard drive.

Then you can DOUBLE (ideally triple) EVERYTHING if you have a backup.

Think before you speak next time, d3ft.

    • +1

We're all becoming a bunch of media hoarders.

Puts hand up…Guilty as charged, I'm afraid! :)

      • +1

Would the media hoarders pls stand up?!

    • So we're going to clog bandwidth and waste precious quota every time we want to watch something we've already seen, even if we just want to see snippets of it we have to start downloading the entire thing all over again; when we could have it on a drive, ready to go and be streamed around the house at a moment's notice for our convenience?

If anything we're being thrifty and conservative, not hoarding.

      • That's my rationale too! :)

  • "640K ought to be enough for anybody."

  • -3

I agree with d3ft! Although some possible usage can be the following in different partitions or all in a single partition:

    Partition 1
    WII USB hard drive backup

    Partition 2
PS3/ Set top box media downloads

    Partition 3
    Steamnetwork digital downloads backups

    Partition 4
    Video editing files

    Partition 5
    Music and DJ remixes files

    Partition 6
    Personal files eg. photos, documents

…… cant think of anymore right now… lol

    • +2

      partition 07 (hidden)?? lol

    • +3

Having partitions is the worst thing ever! Better off making a ZFS server with 28.4TB server and use folders

  • +2

guys, read the 1 star reviews on amazon before you decide to buy one…not really a bargain if it doesn't work for you IMHO!

  • +4

"it is all you will need for the rest of your life it's that big!"

    that's what 'he' said?

  • Could anyone comment on the read/write speed of this drive or a similar external Seagate? I'm looking for an external HDD, but I am also a little wary with the mediocre reviews.

  • Good price

  • I buy twice of whatever I buy for redundancy, but I'm really not sure how this will work with returning when faulty.

If only prices were reasonable in Australia.

    • +1

      You must have won that 70mil? I'll take 1000 houses…no make that 2000! :-p

  • Time to whip out the good'ol plastic prying tool again ;)

    • That's what she said! :p

  • Good price but for a few $ more, this is a better drive http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-GoFlex-External-STAC…

I bought one 2Tb for $149 from Office Works on the weekend.

  • Great price

  • Super-deal. Ordered one. Thanks! Can save a little bit more if you order in USD and have 28degrees card.

  • not bad, i just ordered 4 for my nas. $138.99 per drive with $33.72 postage to me $603.78 Total.

  • Edit*

  • Lots of neg comments on Amazon… hmm……………

  • These would be 5900 RPM right?

  • Seagate drives are great. Their cases are crap. Great price even if you took it out of the case and either use it as an internal drive or put it inside a proper hard drive case.

I bought one to upgrade my Time Capsule.

Most bad reviews and YouTube vids seem to refer to the problematic case.

  • Excellent price & value, but unfortunately it's an appalling quality product. Buyer beware.

  • +3

I have one of these and it's great apart from the auto sleep feature of the drive, it would automatically put the drive into sleep mode after x time.
The drive was used as a external download drive to illegally download tvshows and movies ;) Yes I am a pirate deal with it.

I had to get a nosleep program to constantly write data to the drive every 30mins to stop this.

    • +1

So is that feature written into the firmware of the drive's chipset? Sure it wasn't just windows power saving settings causing that?

      • +1

Pretty sure it wasnt windows. I checked the power settings on the USB and the Driver sleep timer in Windows 7.

Then googled info about the drive and yeah found other have similar issues.

So I think it's the drive.

  • Bought two of these last time - a few things to note
    1. They'll still spin the drive when plugged into power even after the PC is shut down
    2. The power plugs (drive end) seem a little touchy and can lose connection from a slight bump
    3. They are QUITE FAST!

Also if you click through the link made by the OP that means the OP gets refferal money ~1% of the sale.

    Mods did you know this?

Can you change it or it doesnt matter that the affiliate link is used as the clickthrough?

    • I changed it once. OP has changed it back again. I have changed it once again so there shouldn't be an affiliate code (tag=) on the link any more.

Per the affiliate link policy, please don't post affiliate links in the main URL. Description is fine though as long as you declare it.

        Coolies thanks! =)

  • nvm

  • Does anyone know if Seagate offer international warranty? From what I have read the consumer would need to pay for shipping to and from Seagate, but I did not see anything about international cover.

    • You would have to send the item back to Seagate or Amazon

      • But it's international warranty, right? So long as that is the case, that would be okay.

  • I'll be grabbing one of these to crack open and put in my tower.

  • Does anyone know if they are the same as the internal hard drives? I.e. the Barracuda?

    • No, this one is external. Usually externals are different from internals. But paradox is that if you take drive out of external it will become internal. So yes. But you will lose warranty.

Hope it is not too confusing.

      • Sorry - what I was trying to ask is whether the drives used here are the same as the internal hard drives Seagate sell separately or are something inferior which spins at 5700rpm etc.

      • Just read below - all good thanks.

  • +1

I bought 5 of these in September when they were US$109 @ Amazon for my Microserver.

At the time they all had ST3000DM001 drives and all have been fine since then.

Wish I had bought more, could have done a brogan, as they more than doubled in price a few months later…

    • $109 for 3tb 8 months ago ,wow where was I?

      • pre flood sales :) it was a prosperous time, 2tb drives for <70 each, 3tb's for 100.

      • The deal was posted here back then:
        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/52742

        • -2

          Indeed.

Made alot of money with the flood sales, got wind of it by a supplier just before prices were raised, brought as many as i could and resold a little later on for triple the dollars.

        • lol at the negative nellies, i take it people dont like making a little cash on the side? just taking advantage of knowing what was happening just before it occured. They went up regardless i just brought pre flood prices.

  • Good price, buy

  • good deal

  • -1

For those who can claim GST, a good local alternative is:
    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/seagate-expansion-desk…

    ex GST comes to $150
    + delivery (for me) $9.85

But note this is USB 2.0, so maybe only worth considering if you are planning to remove the drive.

  • These drives are now $129.99 USD - a $9 drop. Time to start begging for a refund :)

  • Ta for that.

Ordered 30 in 5 seperate orders, server was due for an upgrade :)

    • Out of 30, report back how many DOA's you get. ;) In all seriousness though, there is yet another negative review only 8 hours old (only had drive for 35 days) which suggests the housing still has issues. It's a shame, because the price is right, but these reviews are keeping me away.

      • +1

Ill run a full surface scan on each drive when they rock up, pretty confident that they should be fine, even if i have 4 DOA's that i for whatever reason could not RMA (which i doubt since i have access to a seagate corporate account) ill still be ahead cost wise.

  • Got one via affilate link, cheers OP

  • I bit the bullet and grabbed one via the affiliate link. I'll also run a surface scan and report back on the USB 3.0 speeds with my setup. Hopefully all goes well - thanks OP.

  • I bought 2 of these about a year ago from Amazon (just before the Taiwan disaster). Cost $99 each, the price is dropping, but still not as good as they were.

  • Cant ship to Aus :(

This item cannot be shipped to the address you selected. (Learn more.) You may either change the shipping address or remove the item by clicking Delete.

    • many people above could, wonder why? ( i havent tried yet)

    • Are you trying to send it to a p.o. box? If so, try a street address.

      • tried both … wont allow me and iv purchased many hdds from amazon :\
