Razer Huntsman TE Optical Linear Switch Gaming Keyboard ($69) https://www.mwave.com.au/product/refurbished-razer-huntsman-…
Razer Huntsman Mini Optical Clicky Switch Gaming Keyboard ($59) https://www.mwave.com.au/product/refurbished-razer-huntsman-…

Bought the TE a couple months back for $85 and can absolutely recommend it. I did recommend it to a friend who got one with a dead ESC key but mwave gave them a new one same day they brought it in without hassle so, probably just got unlucky.

Insanely good keyboards for the price.

sick of the THOK THOK of my cherry mx blues, is this a good option? my phase of loud keyboards is gone and I want something quiet but still mechanical.

    • as someone who personally owns the linear switch tkl, the switches themselves are silent but it isn't a quiet keyboard since the sound of the caps hitting the faceplate make a little bit of noise, I wouldn't call it annoying though, just something to consider.

      • I see, thanks for that. I'll try find a sound comparison video but anything even 50% quieter than my cherry mx blues will be a significant improvement to me.

        edit: perfect

      • On top of that, accidental presses are a thing. It definitely takes some time to get use to.

Consider the TES68 keyboard with gateron switches on aliexpress if you want a custom board. Would be cheaper than this, lots of YT vids about it

    • Any links to the aliexpress products? I had a quick look at the TES68 which brought back lots of results, but don't know where to start! TIA

Apologies, it's called the TESTER68, not the TES. I bought mine from this seller but it looks like the prices have gone up a tiny bit. I would recommend NOT getting the keycaps with the set. They are extremely poor quality but if you don't care then better for you since it's only a few dollars to add on. If you're not too fussed about the colour I might go for something like the Milk & Honey doubleshot PBT set that is very common. Alternatively for something a little higher quality you can get an Akko set for around $60USD (sometimes cheaper on sale), they also sell Akko sets at PCCG for $90.
If you look around at different TESTER68 kits a lot do come with switches but they are CIY and not Gateron, the one below is specifically Gateron switches.
Just a note that the TESTER68 is a wireless only keyboard, (2.4ghz or bluetooth) and uses 2 AAA batteries. There is no option for wired operation and no backlight in the keyboard at all.

Another budget option is the TESTER84, which is wired ONLY but I have not tried out that keyboard yet.

        • Thanks so much for your helpful reply! ⌨

I want mechanical but it has to be quiet, as I type fast and don't want to annoy either people when I am working from home or colleagues in the office… what switches should I go for? Don't care about lights at all, in fact would rather not have any backlighting..

          Cheers,
          David

@beebul: I think that you are after a linear switch (2 other main types are clicky like cherry blues and tactile like cherry browns but there are a few others like topre).

The Gateron Yellow is the budget choice for most people but it is a tiny bit scratchy. You can also lube (lubricate) the switch to make it smoother but this is just additional cost.

My recommendation at the budget end is Gateron yellows. If you go onto youtube you can find people doing typing tests to get an idea of the sound levels. Obviously very subjective based on the environment, microphone, gain levels, mic position, desk mat, keyboard case/mods etc.

  • Ooh, refurb gamer keyboard. You'll find neckbeard whiskers, Red Bull drips, and Doritos crumbs in that bad boy.

    • It's a razer refurb, kb has to be in brand new condition and fully working. Most of them are change of mind returns.

Source: I asked mwave and razer when I bought one for myself

Super tempted by this after trying the Steelseries Apex Pro. Coming from the K65 rapidfire it's amazing how much nicer the contactless linear switches feel, although going from 3.4 to 4mm travel distance was a major downside as it made bottoming out feel too floaty. The rest of the keyboard was trash though, which is a dealbreaker at $240.

Only thing holding me back on the TE is that every review and sound test says it sounds terrible, heaps of rattle and ping. Even the +$100 Huntsman V2 sounds like jingle bells https://youtu.be/MIs-M4VM4bg?t=317

https://youtu.be/NvJ1mh2XkfI?t=37 It sounds like every single key has a rattling stabiliser, so modding will be mandatory for me, and at that point it's hard to not look at higher end options.

    • I'm not sure if youre looking at an older model but my TE doesn't have any rattle or ping, I bought mine from this deal, either way the switches aren't soldered and it's probably not hard to mod. Also I much prefer the ux from razer over corsair or steelseries in terms of build qual, choice of switches and software.

Pulled the trigger and it arrived today, pretty much brand new.

It's better than the Steelseries Apex Pro in almost every way at 1/3rd of the price, except for not being analog. Keycaps are on a different level to typical gamer $2 keycaps, very thick PBT with a nice font, but the translucency is inconsistent on some keys. The actual LED is bright af, but the keycaps just don't let much light through. No ping or rattle, it actually sounds better than every stock video thank goodness, but it does sound very hollow due to the case.

Bottoming out (and coming back up) is very loud. Can be alleviated with double O rings.

Fits cherry profile thick PBT keycaps for the most part, but for R4 you can feel maybe the stabiliser touching the sides of the keycap if you fully press down.

Default angle is pretty flat which I dislike because then I have to use the tilt feet, which makes the keyboard sound so much worse.

Got 135 WPM (peak 164!!) within 5 tries coming from the Anne pro 2 with Gateron browns which is great because I expected an adaptation period which might mean it's even better after some time to get used to it. I definitely early press in Osu after transitioning, which will probably a day to get used to.

I might change the switch on the spacebar to something heavier because the combination of the default tilt and high actuation point makes me activate it a bit too easily.

The case and plate are definitely the worst things about the keyboard, thin, hollow sounding and will flex in the middle.

I can recommend this at $77 but coming from the near flawless Anne Pro 2 which I got for $90 it's definitely lower quality. The different features (contactless linear, TKL format vs 60%-which I've grown to dislike) are the reasons I bought the Razer.

        • Very well put! This is pretty much my exact experience. It takes maybe a week to get used to how light the keys are and the accidental presses but yeah other than that I love the kb. Thank you for writing your experience, will massively help me explain this keyboard better and other ozbargainers get a better understanding. The sound of it bottoming out is pretty loud, I'll definitely look into getting double O rings. Also I didn't realize the case and plate were comparatively poor quality because I mainly have just had mainstream consumer mechs like a k70 and huntsman elite.

  • This appears back in stock. I’ve reported to unexpire the deal.
Still making up my mind about getting the TKL one :)
