Which Brand Drivers Do You Hate The Most?

I know it is ridiculous to hate drivers based on what car they are driving, but I really have a thing with BMW X series drivers.

I know for sure it isn't a jealousy thing, because I don't have the same sentiment towards other luxury brands like Mercedes or Audi etc.

I don't know what it is about them, but BMW X series drivers seem:

  • entitled
  • never give "thank you" waves
  • aggressive
  • don't indicate
  • change lanes constantly
  • always cut the queue to front of lane in traffic light, that ends after the light

So every time I see a BMW I have this natural instinct to not extend courtesy to them on the road (such as not making room for them into traffic, when they are coming out of petrol stations etc, because I know they aren't gonna give me that thank-you wave).

Is this just me? Or does anyone else have like a "pet-peeve" brand of cars you really hate on the road?

p.s. I'm a Tesla driver btw lol

I hate people that give VW group money for overpriced and unreliable sh17boxes while providing poor customer service and knowingly contributing to premature death through poor air quality.

    • +1

Yes, a thing for me too. I just don’t understand how buyers can ignore this.

      • I just don’t understand how buyers can ignore this.

Maybe all bad publicity is just not quite right.

After all the very original VW (Beetle) concept survived since 1936?
        Older than the Jeep ;-)

    • +3

      This 100%

Boggles my mind that they still achieved their goal of becoming the largest automotive group.

      Do people not have standards?

      • +8

A number of people at the time VW was recalling cars over diesel gate heard that their cars ran worse after the fix and then decided not to get the fix done, even though poisonous particulates could be making people sick, themselves and their own families

        • -1

Tragedy of the commons. They see their contribution to pollution as negligible and the risks wouldn't improve noticeably if they stopped (and strictly speaking, they're right) and the benefit they gain far outweighs the loss.

It's hard to get people to look at the bigger picture and even harder to change behaviour. We're all guilty of it to a greater or lesser extent, even if we try to conscientious, as everyone has blind spots.

          • -1

@banana365: True, however the biggest blind spot here is that it's them and their kids having around that exhaust pipe, and it could well be no one else on their entire block has a diesel

    • +5

I agree but Land Rover, Jeep, Chrysler, Jaguar are far, far worse when it comes to reliability and customer service.

      • This. I find most Jeep drivers very annoying. Like the BMW drivers, but the Jeep drivers cannot drive.

    • +3

What car manufactures should money be going to instead?

      • -1

Ones that are abiding by regulations in place to try and keep the air clean(ish) and not causing excessive amounts of pollution on purpose.

        • +10

So which ones? I have no idea.

          • -6

@serpserpserp: That is obvious by your wanting a detailed list. If you don’t think VW did anything wrong and weren’t doing things to kill people prematurely just to make profits, then I’ve got a big grey bridge for sale in Sydney you can grab for a low low price 😉

            • +7

              @[Deactivated]:

If you don’t think VW did anything wrong

              Didn't say that.

Given you're the one detailing how bad they are compared to other car makers, figured you could give me one or two names of who is better.

              • @serpserpserp: Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Mitsubishi (but not those crappy Nissan ones), Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki.
They all do a decent vehicle that’s ultra reliable and have good dealer support and manufacturers backing.

                • +3

@[Deactivated]: Sounds like John Cadogan's list….. are you a fan?

                  • @bobbified: Yes, but I have also worked with all of these males and can attest to their quality and longevity. Adding to the list would be jeep/Chrysler, Renault, Nissan, Holden, ford, VW, Daihatsu, Alfa, Honda and bmw. All of which I would never own and never recommend to family or friends.

    • +12

As a bit of a VW fan, I feel there are a few myths here. I find VW/Skoda great value with noise, vibration, interiors and drive characteristics comparable (and sometimes superior) to Lexus etc. They’re also very fuel efficient (6L/100km), cost similar or lesser to maintain than Jap/Korean due to longer service intervals. They may be more enviro friendly in fact due to lower oil changes and fuel usage? Not entirely sure though.
I’m happy pay for innovation. Eg, I cannot stand most auto gearboxes and love that VW make the DSG so affordable. Yes, anecdotally, they blow up. So do Honda CVTs. But in my case, I’ve had DSG 6 & 7 speeds over 15 years in 4 cars now and they’ve not missed a beat.
As for dieselgate, I totally agree with you. Thankfully there aren’t too many diesel VWs of that era in Aus.

      • -3

When I use the term VW it includes the 4 ring circus and the green eyed irrelevance.

      • +1

15/4=3.7 or thereabouts. If your dsg blew up in under 4 years that would be crazy, it could well be the next bloke dealing with your issue. In the other hand, Toyota's trannys almost always go the life of the car, many exceeding 300k kms and lasting 30 years without issue.

      • +1

I’ll never buy another VW after having constant issues with DSG in my MKVI Golf to the point that I didn’t feel safe driving the car. Conveniently the dealers could never replicate the issue, even though it was a known problem that VW later admitted to. It’s a shame because the cars can be wonderful to drive and the interior is fantastic, I’d love to have a GTI or R but could never trust them again. I’ve had 11 cars of different ages from various manufacturers and VW is the only one that’s left a sour taste in my mouth.

        • Could always lease a Golf, so the reliability issues during the 3-year term are the dealer's problem.

    • +2

Logged in to make sure I voted on a comment about VW drivers. Every time we hear a w@nker racing on public roads the mrs and I say "bet it's a VW" and 9/10 times we're right.

      • Hmmm statistically speaking, there's not that many vw owners. Therefore least likely a vw. But depends on your suburb. Might have a bunch of vw lovers in your area

    • +3

Hope you feel similarly to all the brands listed on this page because they've all been done for it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_emissions_scandal

      • +3

Yep, they’re all cnuts and I would never buy a car from any of those makers. All produce poor quality and unreliable sh17boxes so there you go. Lying, cheating and scamming consumers, what a great way to display their rubbish to the public. I’ll stick with Japanese and Korean vehicles with proven reliability and company morals.

    • +1

What about those of us who bought the car 15 years ago before any of that bad news came out?

    • Tesla victims: "hold my almond milk latte"

    • +2

I honestly wanted to become one of these drivers because their cars (in my case an Audi) were so much better equipped than the competition.
Bought one and honestly has been one of the most expensive 8 months of my life. if i wasn't in a semi-decent paying job i'd have scrapped the thing and binned it.

Yes the engineering behind it was fantastic on paper and it works wonders (when it works) heaven forbid something breaks down (and it's never just 1 thing) and the car is out of action for a couple of weeks while you wait for parts, then you're asked to bend over while they go in dry.

I never thought owning a car could be traumatic until now.
I'll stick to my Kia's thankyouverymuch.

Anyone who continues to own a VW/Porsche/Audi and tell themselves that everything is fine is really kidding themselves.
There's a reason their warranties expire after 5 years

      • +1

My situation is exactly as you describe it haha.
Went from an A6 to a Kia and was the best decision 😂

      • When we bought our little bmw; we specifically avoided Audi despite having a little more bells and whistles due to the poor reputation it has with its build quality and repair work.
Honestly our little beemer is a beautiful car and have no regrets. (BMW 218 gran coupe for reference)

      • Damn, this just reinforces my fears of upgrading.
I've put several 100k km's on my 2003 Mitsubishi magna and it's never had a serious or costly issue, I also never take it in for a service and will only lazily change out oil every year or so. I just can't kill it lol.
Everyone I know with new cars seems to be spending endlessly on them..

        • Yeah, i didn't think you could make a car as complicated and unreliable until i shifted to an Audi.

It's more everything is so highly tuned to run in sync that the smallest issue effectively cripples the car, in my case resulting in $8,000 in repairs (and the check engine light is still on).

Headlight goes out - entire car starts screaming at you (sometimes the light isn't even out)
Washer fluid low - entire car starts screaming at you
Run the tank below 1/4 full - entire car starts screaming at you
Even the check engine light comes on for errors that don't even affect the driving of the car (no telephone installed, side door latch issues you name it it reports it.)

Oh and pro tip, if you're doing school runs and trips within the city DON'T buy a diesel. The DPF/EGR valves will gunk up and cripple your engine. Diesels are built for long highway runs.

Honestly I hate anyone who drives a BMW.

    They are total f$#%wits.

    • +7

My father-in-law started driving like an arse the moment he bought a BMW. Pretty sure he got a beemer for exactly that reason, everyone expects you to be an arse anyway so might as well go along with it.

I have a neighbour just got an X series too, they keep parking it the wrong way on our street (there's only parking on one side, so rather than turn around they just drive in the wrong way). They're going to have an accident one day because they can't see shit when pulling out of the park again.

      • +4

        They'll also get a ticket

    • +4

Looking forward to my new BMW driving experience ;)

    • +1

If I had a BMW, I'd pee on ya! 😋

    • Haha glad to know I'm not the only one

    • +10

Reminds me of the old joke:
What’s the difference between a porcupine and a BMW?
BMW has the pricks on the inside…..

      • +1

Hears that in the 90s, but with Volvos

        • +1

Heard that but with cop cars!

        • +1

The Volvo one I liked was that the 90s Volvos were actually beautiful cars, but the owners wouldn’t unpack them from their shipping crates….

      • +10

        Better punchline is
"The porcupine has pricks on the outside…"

    • +3

BMWs must be horribly uncomfortable cars - the drivers are in such a hurry to get out of them! ;-)

      • +2

Not to mention the thumbtacks the factory put on the indicator stalks!

    • +1

I wonder if anywhere stocks indicator bulbs for BMW's, considering they never get used they should be a last for the life of the car item. :-)

    • Amen.

    • BMW stands for 6u115h1t motor works

  • +11

does anyone else have like a "pet-peeve" brand of cars you really hate on the road?

    p.s. I'm a Tesla driver btw lol

Very funny that you ask, OP. You see…

    • Yeah why is that? I just like techie things….

      • +14

Elon is only second to bezos in douche stakes. Both have businesses I can appreciate but they are absolute twats.

        • +3

Yep, both are knob jockies but Musk leads the duo.

        • +9

I'd say Musk is far more of an (profanity) than Bezos.

The whole pedo diver thing - complete (profanity), his 'submarine' was such an obvious PR stunt meanwhile those divers genuinely risked so much saving those kids.

Not to mention the countless stories of staff saying how he's a douchebag in Tesla/SpaceX etc.

          • +4

            @Deals For Days: Agree.

But having your staff pee in a bottle or making them work around a dead colleague is a close second i guess.

          • -1

@Deals For Days: I like that he can pull any sci fi style technology and tell the public "we could totally implement this right now" and they will fall over themselves to give him millions/billions. Then he just doesn't do it, because it's not technologically possible.

  • +47

I have a thing with Tesla drivers now

    • There are a couple model 3 owners who live up the road from me. They absolutely floor it and zoom around the residential streets. Super dangerous.

      • +1

Probably still not used to getting all their torque from 0rpm…

      • as a new M3 owner, its really not our fault. im not a hoon by any means but man they are just so zippy without even trying. I think its just such a change from ICE based cars, the instant acceleration + the overall speed of Teslas. its very common to be flatfooted just for the experience after getting one of these cars. that normally dies off obviously but i still find myself doing it now and then in safe areas

    • -1

I steadily get slightly more annoyed with Tesla cars, nothing to do with environmental reasons (I think what they're doing on that front is great), because they have a silly thing where if you just WALK past them in a car park they flash their lights and light up their screen, it also happens if you're parked in the car next to them and just move a bit in the driver's seat - it's just plain annoying and distracting and therefore a really selfish design. And the tiny turn rear indicators, and the side turn indicators aren't visible from behind. And don't even get me started on the subscription mentality for a car, which shows up in the inflated repair costs, the locked down components to prevent 3rd party repairs, or the $10,000 to enable the heated seats which are already installed …

      • tell me more - where are tesla charging $10,000 for heated seats???

    • My biggest gripe is that 75% of Teslas have personalised plates referencing the fact that its a tesla

  • +13

    VW golf drivers

    • +10

Ooooo yeah especially the GTI drivers ay

      • +4

The number of times I've seen a GTI try to race another car …

      • +3

I find the R drivers to be bigger Fwits in my experience haha

    • -6

This, especially Golf GTI and R drivers. VW's are essentially the cheaper and nastier Audi cousins for most models. There's also no reason to buy a VW if you could get the equivalent Audi model. No, I'm not an Audi fan, their dominant handling trait is still excessive understeer and the transmission + clutch of my Audi R8 failed at just over 40,000km, didn't have much luck with my RS6 and RS4 either but those are long stories.

    • +2

GTi and R with DSG farts and really noisy exhaust taking joyrides around neighbourhoods in the middle of the night!
Same so for 90s Civic drivers with modded exhausts!

Camry Altise - always driven by someone over the age of 70 who cannot drive for shyte.

Mini Countryman - only driven by arseholes

Mazda 2 & 3 - the modern day Hyundai Xcel drivers of days yore

Silverado drivers - no explanation needed

Jeep Grand Cherokee - generally just the worst of humankind, often stay at home mums of rich husbands who couldnt care less if they get in a crash because money

Special mention to anyone with a flatbed ute, not good enough or high up enough to need a proper tradie ute, but still want to pretend like they matter with their welded on tool box and in some cases, a dog cage for their staffy/pit bull.

    • +20

Wow dude, i thought i had a thing against the humanity, but you need some help hahahaha

      • +6

I need no help, I embrace the hate, it fuels me.

      • -2

nah camry drivers have been shit for decades

usually a hat on the parcel shelf

usually accelerate at the pace of a motorized scooter

usually sit at least 10 under the limit on the right lane

        usually asian or indian

usually never look in the rear vision mirror to see traffic is banked up behind them

they are just oblivious to their surroundings, if it was a personality it would be a narcissist

        • +5

Here’s your dog whistle. I think you dropped it

        • The 90s called..

    • +2

Pretty sure Tesla drivers personality is that 'i have a Tesla, look at me/it'

Taxi drivers are pretty mental on the road, they could randomly stop anywhere.
    Also old commodores and utes.

    • +8

      +1 for taxi drivers

Drive arrogantly, erratically and act like they own the roads cos they are “professional drivers”

      • +1

I don't think I've seen much arrogance in taxi drivers - that's more the preserve of tradies in utes and vans. But agree with the eraticness of taxi drivers - a lot of sleep deprivation/inattention/unfamiliarity with road rules.

  • +1

Not a particular brand of cars, but.. .Uber and other ride share drivers who think they can stop anywhere they like or pull into a space halfway and leave their butt sticking out blocking traffic!
