The price of this phone is just dropping to an iPod Touch level…sheesh

This is the cheapest I've seen Brand New, plenty of refurbished ones on eBay…

Its a great solid all-round phone, I played volleyball with it at the beach…, I even tried to brick this with Custom Roms made by juvenile creators at XDA forums, well it works better than ever now… !!!

Do I have a backup phone ?, yes an iPhone… LOL

I recently got a Defy+, which is the same phone (they only change the battery and clock the CPU higher). I am very happy with it, though it is not the easiest phone if you want to use custom software, and the motoblur software is widely panned (I'm currently using the stock OS but not motorola apps).

    • I think most Defy users get rig of their stock Rom with all that Motoblur hogging stuff, getting stable custom roms improves your battery life tenfold, tweaks the CPU speeds, voltage, 720p recording, fixes a lot of default background services running unnecessarily…, a lot more variation of things depending on the roms you are after !

The world you need to explore can be found at the XDA Forums,
      Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=852

      • Yes, I've done all that however:

1: The defy+ isn't quite so stable - there are issues with charging the battery and the camera likes to get stuck in an autofocus loop.

2: For most people this is beyond them. Particularly when it comes to sbf versions and avoiding getting stuck on version 7, but even just the first step of root/2ndinit.

          Bruce…

          1. I haven't charged my phone for 4 days(I've still got 15% left as we speak… lol), everything you just said is reflected by the software you are using, I have never had ANY such issues, you are dealing with something corrupt, do a full clean fresh install of either CM or MIUI, send me a PM anytime ! ;)

          2. Simply follow the instructions word for word and you should be on your merry way !, the biggest mistake lies in your SD card when you do ANYTHING with Roms !

I'm not talking about bettery usage, I'm talking about the battery failing to charge at all. I have tried a few nightlies, the only build claiming to actually support the + is ms2ginger, which I will get to, but the advantages of a stable working build are greater for me at present that possible efficiency improvements. Note that the Defy+ comes with newer software than the Defy, so it is possible that the difference for me is far less significant.

There is lots of (mis)information around, and many borken links, and out of date information. Most perfectly intelligent people will have neigher the time nor interest in sorting through all of that, and many wouldn't understand what they were reading if they did.

        • I say Give MS2Ginger a go !, I used it for a long time, it was the longest living Rom in my Defy… :D

Only real issue I had with it, was its highly sensitive proximity sensor, when I go to pickup my calls it would go blank on me, I'd smack it knowing its a Defy and it would listen…. lol :P

Which custom ROM are you using? Been looking at CM9 but it doesn't seem quite stable enough yet, CM7.2 is apparently the one to use but MS2Ginger looks quite good also. Not to mention the plethora of other ROMs floating around :P

        • I'm currently using MIUI-2.4.20, I have used CMs before, previously used MS2Ginger was superb, until I finally found the need to give MIUI a try…

I need people to ask me questions like this ! lol :P

        • CM7.2 has had a few reported issues on some Defys. I'm using 7.1 and have been since it went stable. Rock solid on my Defy.

    Not compatible with Telstra NextG

    • -3

This model is not capable of Next G speeds, it will work on the Telstra, everything does…lol

This refurbished one is Next G ready for $199 with free P/H…

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Motorola-Defy-MB525-Next-G-Rural-…

      • Wrong. Do NOT get this phone if you want to use Telstra. Optus use 2100 and (increasingly) 900 for 3g. Telstra use 850 and (very small amounts of fall back) 2100.

The defy (and defy plus) come in either 850/2100 or 900/2100. You should make sure you get the right one for your provider. If you use a 900/2100 phone on telstra you will only get occasional poor 3g in cities (2g/edge will work fine).

Also note that most ebay sellers have NFI what they are doing (I've been sent a phone with the wrong frequencies).

What was I wrong about ?, It will work just not on Next G…, why are you soo animated ?, its just a general question… lol

Perhaps you should read the post you replied to again.

Getting a phone like this is of questionable value if you only want to make calls or use edge for data.

          Bruce, futile arguments ??? rofl…

As I said Not capable of Next G, he won't buy it fine, no one will, are you happy now ???? LOL

I'm not posting to be vindictive, you may know exactly what you mean and how it all works, but many people who read this don't. There have been many discussions on the usefulness of information provided regarding products that have come up here and the advantage of such a community site is to provide useful (clear) advice to those who may need it.

        • Thank you Sir Bruce OzB, I have knighted you with a +ve ! thx ;)

  • I watched a guy put one of these in a cocktail shaker and it came out fine, pretty cool way to market the phone.

mmmm still no deal on this one Im afraid

  • Mine has copped a lot of abuse since November and is still quite happy. The stock ROM is fine for most people.

If you plan to use data at all then the 525 is for the Optus network. Liveconnected are optus resellers with very cheap plans.

  • Can't wait till price drops to around $150

  • Mine arrived Monday morning. Purring along very nicely now with CM 7.1.

It's got the Bayer (red lens) camera module.

    Thanks Elijah!
