This phone has one of the highest radiation levels. Not that its going to fry your brain but better to keep in mind.

    https://www.visualcapitalist.com/radiation-emissions-of-popu….

Good deal if you are after this specific model. +1

    • +2

u got better signal with higher radiation levels right ?

    • +1

Eh, less than an iPhone 13 pro, and there's plenty of those in use.

    • +3

That´s the Edge (2020) not the Edge 20 Pro (2021).

The 20 Pro has 1W/Kg SAR score, the same as the Google Pixel 6 or the Iphone 13 Pro.

  • Same price at Officeworks already so unfortunately cannot price beat

  • Anyone know where to get cases for this phone? Doesn't seem to have as many options as other flagships

    • so many to choose on ebay…..

      • even on eBay it was hard, I was looking at one for my mum's Edge 20 Fusion and the options were limited

    • Aliexpress

  • i think this is just the new standard price , considering JB selling the new Edge 30 Pro at $999 standard price ?

    • Officeworks also has it at $599.00 claiming it's "priced to clear".

Wouldn't call it "new standard price" so much as them just getting rid of the remaining stock.

    • The Edge 30 pro will be $799 next Thursday at JB.

      • +1

        Where did you see that?

        • In the catalogue for next week.

          • @CheapGit: Any links? Can’t see it anywhere on Jb website.

            • +1

@OZBsince2018: Sorry, i'm not in at work so can't share screen grab.
Also probably won't be visible on JB online catalogue till beginning of week and it's also listed for same price in brochure printed for sales starting Thursday 5th May.

              • +1

@CheapGit: Share the links or screen grab whenever you can 👍

                • +1

@OZBsince2018: Anyway my bad got my dates mixed up, probably looking at something else at the same time but I'm blaming lack of sleep while reading lol

Sale date is not this Thursday but 5th May - https://imgur.com/F4Nq6Iw

@CheapGit: All good mate. Thanks for sharing the screen grab. Worth waiting till 5th May 😊

      • The edge 30 pro will have a "technically faster" cpu (8gen1) that overheats and throttles, I'd rather get the 20 pro with the 870.

The only problem is only one year left of security updates, but then again, the edge 30 pro only has 2, so it sucks as well.

  • Hmmm this or the Samsung A73 + buds 2 for $640.

    • just fyi the buds sux.

      • Yeah? Reviews are decent enough. What's the issue with them?

    • +2

Get a Samsung. They give you 4 years of upgrades. That's the only reason why I got the A53 instead of going for another Xiaomi or Moto.

Plus… even though One UI is a bit clunky and bloated, their extra bits can be quite handy. Bixby Routines and Smart Things are great.

      • What's better, min 2 years of bi-monthly security updates or 4 years of quarterly updates?

      • i think Samsung keep giving u updates becoz there ar too many bugs in their One UI,
otherwise u don't really need that much updates, android 7 from 2016 still works fine nowadays.

        • Working fine, yes. But I'd worry about security. There may be zero-day exploits (either from Android or the maker's distribution or whatever you want to call it) which will not get patched because it's too old. I hate that they do that because it forces you to either flash your phone or chuck it. Responsibly, of course.

My Redmi Note 3 works just fine too. I've had to flash it a few times, but I won't use it for anything more than just games.

          • @BadGiraffe: if you don't flash the ram, don't install apps from unknown source, then there is nothing about security u need to worry.

In fact i have not heard anything about anyone's phone got hacked becoz its running old version of android.

            • @samelight: Point taken. I still place high priority on upgraded software. Which is why I've gone over my budget to get my A53. I just hope other manufacturers do the same. It'll give me more choice down the road.

    • With the Motorola you get
      • Slightly better CPU
      • Dual band gps
      • Slightly better screen (HDR10, 144hz vs 120hz)
      • Faster storage I believe
      • Telephoto camera
      • usb 3.1 and usb to displayport connection
      • closer to stock Android

      With the Samsung you get
      • Much longer software support (the Moto only has one year left of Security updates and one more Android update, might have to rely on Custom ROMs after).
      • SD card
      • Larger battery (not necessarily longer lasting, we have to wait for tests for that)
      • OneUI, which nowdays some people prefer of stock Android, but that's subjective.

  • I presume Gcam is available for this model? I'd struggle to buy any phone that didn't have Gcam available for it.

  • Camera isnt any good in low light. Read reviews on the camera performance. The spec sheet looks good but using it was very underwhelming.
Also salty I bought it for $684 the other week with a price match.

    • The camera seems to be really bad in low light, and there's no wireless charging as well?

      • +1

Also doesn't have stereo speakers (only has a single bottom-firing speaker) which is a big flaw. I was interested in this phone but this omission really stood out to me. My 4 year old XZ2 at least has stereo speakers and aptX support.

        • +1

Oh my, this sux and $599 should be their retail price with all the sub-par features comparing to the other mid range phones

          • @GeneralKeen: For sure, even my midrange Oppo was way better than this motorola "pro". Disappointed but stuck with it.

        • +1

          That is subjective.

I actually prefer phones with just 1 speaker since I never use them and I prefer manufacturers spending money in other areas.

  • +3

My main gripe with this phone are software updates: Only one year left of security updates.

How much of a big deal is that? Still fine to use after? Would custom ROMS be a decent compromise?

Hardware wise the phone has very few compromises and pretty much all I want:

    • One of the phew phones with dual-band gps
○○○• EDIT: gsmArena reports it has dual band gps, but I've just checked and the manufacturer site says nothing and it does not show up in the spreadsheet I use (the 30 pro does, though the manufacturer site, again, says nothing). Now I'm having doubts, it was one of the reasons I had shortlisted this model: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jXtRCoEnnFNWj6_oFlVW…
○○○• EDIT2: this (awesome) review claims it does have dual band (it mentions L1+L5 gps):https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Edge-20-Pro-review-Budget-flagship-smartphone-with-a-144-Hz-display-and-12-GB-of-RAM.575335.0.html

    • Snapdragon 870 is right now the best processor imo (888 and 8gen1 are "faster" but they overheat and throttle, and consume more battery, 870 is more efficient).
    • Great Amoled screen with 144hz (if you are a gamer, keep in mind games are limited to 60 fps)
    • Don't care about only 1 speaker (I only use my phone as a phone or with headphones)
    • One of the cheapest phones with a telephoto camera, if you care about that.
    • no sd card and no headphone jack (you can of course just use an adapter)
    • keep in mind no usb-headphone adapter and no preinstalled screen protector are included. Should come with a condom case though.
    • great battery life
    • clean mostly stock android
    • great, instant side-mounted fingerprint scanner
    • Meant to get Android 12 this month and it is promised to also get Android 13
    • Most importantly… it comes with a proper proximity sensor, unlike those cheapstake midrange Samsungs and Xiaomis (A52s, S20FE, POCO F3…), so you can actually properly use your phone as a phone…

Not sure if I should get this now or just wait a few months and see what Google comes up with with the Pixel 6a or maybe even the 7.

  • Had this for a few months now, came from the trusty V30.
Got to say I love it. Thought I'd miss the SD card, wireless charging, DAC and obviously bad reviews on the camera but none of those things bother me at all.
Battery would probably last me 2 days, generally have 40-50% left at 10 o'clock at night after being off the charger from 4am. Plus the charging is pretty quick for a top up if need be. Camera is still miles ahead of the V30 (as it should be) as well as the Mrs' S20 IMO. Haven't done anything special with it as I haven't felt the need. Only time it's laggy is in portrait mode so I rarely use that. I'd only ever use wireless charging if I had wireless Android Auto and I don't, so it's just a bit of a gimmick to me given how often you need to charge this thing.
I don't ever use the phone speaker either so a mono output is nothing. I think the only bug bear is having to use google photos. Seems so hard to navigate.

For under $600 it's a good deal. Think I'll end up with the Edge 30 Pro whenever they become affordable.

    • DAC you mean because it has no headphone jack? Don't usb to jack adapters already come with a DAC?

Also, could you confirm it has dual band GPS? (L1+L5 / E1+E5 bands)

      • The V30 had an inbuilt DAC which I really liked but was more novelty than anything as I wasn't listening to a heap of lossless content with high end headphones, it just sounded better than bluetooth.
Yes, you can use a dongle if you prefer but most of my time spent listening to music is either with bluetooth headphones or thru the car so no point for me personally. I'd rather be cord free these days unless I'm sitting at a desk listening to music which is rare for me.

I don't know how to accurately test the dual band GPS. From a quick google, using the GPSTest app doesn't even seem accurate as the other LG phones mentioned in their spreadsheet have dual band GPS but don't show it in the app. Is there a way to test this?

        • I believe that´s how people test it, with the GPS Test app in the Carrier Frequency (CF) column L1+L5 and or E1+E5 frequencies should be displayed.

I've come across a couple reviews that seem to have tested it and claim it's indeed dual band. For some reason they don't mention it in Motorola's website.

          • "To determine the position, the GPS module uses the GPS (L1+L5), GLONASS, QZSS, and Galileo main satellite systems, as well as the SBAS satellite-based supplementary system." ( https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Edge-20-Pro-review-Bu… )

          • "GPS: Dual and accuracy <1m (excellent)" ( https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/motorola-edge-20-pro-5g-very-hi… )

          • @HigoChumbo: The confusion is that mine says L1 and E1 which I believe is dual band as per the Mate 20 Pro here. But I can't tell the difference between that result and the S9 one further up the page which supposedly shows it doesn't have dual band? There's no L5/E5 in my CF values.

            • @whitelie: L1 and E1 is single band, for dual band you should see the 1s and the 5s. The Es are the european satellites, I assume Ls are american? Maybe they don't work the same way in Australia.Though maybe it's just the frequencies you are receiving and not necessarily the ones you can receive. Not sure.

Dual frequency should give you almost pin point accuracy, with single frequency you can see error margins of up to 50 mettres.

Have you noticed rather bad gps errors when going to the CBD? (In Melbourne CBD my gps often displays me as if I were in a paralell street or at the next intersection).
