    Thanks for the great description.

  • Is the ram upgradeable DIY, or is it a different option at purchase time.

    • It's DIY. They can do it in store, from asking, but it costs a lot more.

  • Acer quality improved these days?

Also 12 month warranty (Lenovo and Dell does 3 years on their ones at this price point).

Thanks! I confirmed this with Harvey Norman/Domayne/Joyce Mayne online support, who apologized for the error and said it would be rectified.

  • I have the 4500u from last year, same chassis.

Popped an 8gb 2400mhz (as thats all the MoBo in my supports) to dual channel the vega graphics, runs GTA 5 on medium at over 30fps if thats your bag, and runs well with reasonable battery life otherwise. Slow charge though and no display out to a dock for dual screen.

It's not a premium machine (although not as bad as some people seem to indicate, maybe they only ever use commercial grade machines?). Feels good enough, keyboard isn't bad and trackpad works, fingerprint reader is so so.

Ryzen advantages are a spare memory channel to dual channel, the HN techy opened it and the intel MoBo didnt' have expansion so what you buy is what you get with that, it dual channels already but only 2x4gb. Extra space for a second 2.5" ssd is useful too. Screen could be brighter obs but does for general home office use internet and light game playing. Spend an extra few hundred to thousand $ more but then you're in a very different field.

According to the review OP linked, they have upgraded RAM support in this model to 16GB per slot, and the 8GB it comes with is soldered with one free slot available, meaning you don't waste any RAM that comes with the machine.

Seems like Acer are listening to feedback.

      • That's' good, last years intel was 4gb soldered, so havig a single 8gb with 16gb extra available is a good move. I'm still currently in camp AMD as it seems my battery life on this for the same workload is pretty good, but it's not a perfect machine by any standards!

Hopefully Acer will continue to listen and not solder or remove upgrade options, and for the love of dog, Alt-mode DP out please!

          Me too.

for the love of dog, Alt-mode DP out please!

          Yes!

  • wasn't the Lenovo deal better from few days ago? specifically the "ideapad slim 5 pro 16" that could be had for around $1000 I convinced myself to wait for a macbook air deal.

    • who does regular apple sales? wouldnt mind an m1 air myself.

      • Whoever does the regular sales, you can bet both Officeworks and Amazon will match the sale price.

  • Thanks for the insight as I’m in need of a basic decent not so expensive sub $1,000 laptop end up getting this as click and collect….just wanted to know about the DIY memory upgrade mentioned, where’s best to purchase 8gb and any specifics?, would be appreciated, thanks.

You can buy it from Amazon AU, a store on Ebay AU, or an independent computer store. Depending on the capacity you need, you can just start by obtaining 8GB DDR4 SODIMM 2400Mhz speed, like the person above mentioned. Some independent computer stores will just install it for you for a small fee.

      • Thanks mate, for the spec for 8GB is I'm after to bump it up to 16GB for which I'll try all places noted to get the best deal as always….also I'll see to DIY as it seems easy to do, failing which see to getting paid help.
