In my opinion, I would avoid. As a child who grew up religiously playing all the Crash games on ps1, this is simply too difficult. But not fun difficult, like frustrating difficult. Especially if you attempt to try and collect all the boxes, a lot of the times they're hidden off screen in places that make no sense at all.

Thanks for your comment. Wasn't entirely sure I'd like it. Good deal if you're into this style of game, but not for me.

    • Crash 1 was brutally difficult too if you wanted to 100% it. Crash 2 and 3 gave you special abilities that made it a bit easier.

      • I personally thought Crash 2 was hardest in terms of getting 100%, in the sense that it's really not obvious what you need to do to get those special gems. Like, they're really well hidden in terms of discovery.

Crash 1 on the other hand, was harder in terms of platforming but was more straight forward in terms of what you had to do.

Crash 3 is definitely the easiest, although a bit like Crash 2 in that some special areas I doubt you'd be able to find without a guide.

      • I wasted an inordinate amount of time obtaining 100% on all the Crash games as a kid (or more than 100%, in the case of CB3) including up to Twin Sanity, same for Spyro and Gran Turismo. Though it was very fun, so perhaps it wasn't that much of waste…

I have to disagree with this, just personally. I felt like It's About Time was actually the same or slightly easier, mainly because of the the little hint/guide it gives you now (on where your jump will land). I think it's an option in the menus, so maybe try enabling that. Otherwise, it's a really great game if you're a fan of Crash games. I loved it.

I will agree with you on the trilogy though - I felt those were a little more difficult because of some weird slipping animation when jumping between platforms. Was very hard to judge jumps sometimes.

      • I liked all of it up until maybe the last 20% of levels, which were really difficult and actually soured me on the game. Which is a shame because most of it is really fun, and it is beautiful on PS5.

I would never go for 100+% completion; just can't be bothered with it. The hidden crates are nonsense, and the levels are just too long to make scouring them bit by bit fun.

        • Couldn't agree more. I gave up on the last few levels after 100% all other levels. I didn't even end up finishing the game because I was so pissed off.

Agree. The levels are fun, but if you try and go for 100% completion, you’ll get sick of having to repeat them over and over. On the other hand, if you just ignore all the collectables and go through the levels, then there’s not much meat left to the game and you’ll probably be done in a few hours.

    • I had a good time playing it and definitely recommend on a system that supports 60fps - wasn't trying to 100% it though

  • How's the fps on the switch version?

    • Amazon reviews say fps does suffer a bit

      • It's a locked 30. I've played about 3 hours worth of the game and never noticed any dips

I always felt that Crash was a bit of a desperate attempt by Sony to create their own Mario - looks like it gained quite a few fans though, over the years?

    • +4

Crash is equivalent to Mario in terms of quality of gameplay, if not better, at least in terms of PS1 titles. Of course, it's also a bit like comparing apples and oranges, and what you grew up with likely will have influenced what you prefer.

Crash may have ended up as Sony's unofficial mascot to compete with Mario but oh man the journey :')

        I know!

quite a few fans though, over the years?

They are one of the highest selling game series on the PSX

      • Sure, but we’re talking about a Nintendo device here, hence the comparison to Mario.

        • You are correct. I would consider Crash Bandicoot as an earlier mascot of sorts for PlayStation during the PS1 era, in the same way Sonic was for Sega. They all needed something similar to Mario in terms of a platforming type character so I am not disagreeing with you there.

I would say they had fans all the way since PS1 but then long prolonged hiatus' after the crappy PS2 games.

@Lucille Bluth: I played Crash on my PS1 and didn’t like it, I upgraded from a Megadrive (bought it weeks before the SNES came out, a big regret back then, I should have waited) - Sonic was enjoyable but I always kept a soft spot for Mario (before that I had a Gameboy with Mario Land and Mario Land 2 and was a big fan of Mario Bros 3 which one of my mates had on his NES). I ordered Super Mario U Deluxe last week for $39, I’m hoping it will give my kids as much joy as I had playing the older games from this franchise (I tried playing Odyssey myself a while ago, really prefer the 2D side scrollers instead).

Have played, WOULD recommend but with this caveat: give up on 100% before you even start and just enjoy the levels.
Explore the world, find secrets and break as many boxes as you can but don't attempt 100% without a guide.
It's a bummer (and difficult to stick to) but for me it was the only way to properly enjoy the game.

  • I swear this was like $20 on PS4/Xbox
