a i5 2500 would work just as well for any game and is a whole lot cheaper. The GPU is more important for games.
2500k is the best for gaming (hyperthreading of the i7 actually generates unnecessary heat in the cpu and a corresponding performance decrease lol)
If your dumb/tight enough to use stock cooling.
the ivy bridge i5 and i7's are already out and they are hardly impressive, with only slightly higher stock speeds (0.1ghz) and they actually are harder to overclock than the current sandy bridge chips due to smaller surface area which comes with the 22nm technology.
Also this processor is in another league of any quad core i5 or i7. As jono said, your gpu upgrades will be far more significant for a gaming machine as even a bottom end i3 would run most current games fine with a good gpu.
But if your looking for a top end Cpu, just get the 3930k. Wehn overclocked they have almost identical specs being the top 2 processors in the market atm. And save yourself 400buks to put towards a good gpu

It's a huge waste of money for a gaming machine & I wouldnt call it 'by far the lowest price in Australia' when it's only $36 cheaper than the cheapest listings on static ice when your talking about spending $1000. Maybe if it was cheapest by $100+ it might be a bargain, but not even $50? Come on.

This is actually a nice price I reckon. GREAT if your planning to build a top notch gaming machine, though next gen of processors should be coming in a few months I think? So this may drop, but if its longer then your just playing cat and mouse with it. Still awesome price though.
