Currently there is a bug impacting some people where Widevine L1 reverts back to L3 making Netflix/Prime play in SD. There's discussion surrounding fixes such as updating the Widevine Certificate and disabling automatic brightness or clearing the app cache.

For those wondering about the keyboard for this. The official keyboard case with the pogo pins connector is expensive at US$79.36 (~A$106.30) from this store with the coupon ANNI6.

An alternative would be this keyboard and mouse. There's a US$3 off US$30 discount in the cart and the coupon SPRING4 makes it US$35.63 (~A$47.72). The keyboard however is Bluetooth with a magnetic case, plus colour backlighting and a simple Bluetooth mouse.

  • I'd take this in a heartbeat if I could plug it into an external display but Xiaomi still living in the dark ages with USB Type-C 2.0 on all their devices

    • +1

What's the use case for this? Genuinely curious.

      • +3
        • +1

Wouldnt that be the wrong way around? Thats using the pad5 as a screen for a windows pc; plugging in an external display would be using the device with an external display for mirroring, big screen gaming or something like Samsung Dex I presume?

  • Hmm what this or Lenovo for media consumption… Lenovo for the OLED?

    • +3

The Lenovo does use a cheaper pentile OLED display so I personally thing the IPS panel in the Xiaomi is better.

  • These actually have good aftermarket rom support compared to the Lenovo offerings hey?

    • +1

Yeah traditionally the Xiaomi Mi Pad's have always had more custom ROM development, plus more updates. There's no custom ROMs that I can see on xda-developers yet. Given Xiaomi have decided to release a new MIUI built around the new Android 12L for tablets I'd say we should get some after that.

      • +2

Yeah, it's been out 6 months (out of a probable 12 month lifespan) and still no custom rom support is a bit of a concern for future rom prospects, but maybe someone will take up the mantle when official support is dropped or whatever.

I just don't understand why these tablets aren't embraced by the custom rom community, they have the specs and cheap price, sometimes the software support is just a little lacking, it seems the perfect fit for custom ROMs.

We'll see what happens I guess.

        • +3

I just don't understand why these tablets aren't embraced by the custom rom community,

Many of the custom rom makers are doing it for free with their own free time. Some rely on devices being donated to them.

          • @xoom: Oh yeah I totally get that, I just figure if you were into that sort of thing, a cheap device like this would be a cool one to "play around with".

            • @Binchicken22: Though it would be nice to just play all day with these custom roms. Sadly bills gotta be paid. It sucks doing the adulting but its the reality of life.

              • @xoom: Yeah ok… This isn't a personal attack on you. I fully understand the development of these roms is "hobby" based and not a job. I've been on xda forums for a decade or more.

You don't need to keep carrying on about it.

      • Actually i've always found that MiPad's like most tablet offerings in general to have terrible aftermarket rom support when compared to phones. Even looking back a single generation to the MiPad 4 on XDA clearly demonstrates what I mean. The exceptions to this rule are of course Samsung and Pixel.

        • Compared to phones yeah. Compared to Chinese tablets Xiaomi generally have the best ROM support.

        • Hmmm, seems to be over 10 different ROMs for Mi Pad4? Isn't that pretty good?

          • @Punkboy: I guess i'm just spoiled by poco rom support that everything looks lacklustre, if you actually read the posts though theres alot of reports of bugs and instability in almost all of the roms, also i'm pretty sure all of them are now EOL and stopped getting updates about 6 months ago.

    Thanks Momo!!!

    Rewatching avatar?

    • +3

Rewatched the series too many times to count. Hopeful the upcoming Netflix series will be good.

  • Seems like prices for Android tabs are going down week on week. Anyone got any guesses as to if we should HODL or buy now?

    • +2

I can't really see it going down much further for quite a while given it's an AliExpress coupon taking US$30 off and not the store. There's no major upcoming sales either AFAIK.

      • Might just use old iPad for now. Wait to see how good Android 12L is or if Pad 6 has better OLED display. You're probs right on the pricing of this though

    • It will keep going down until there is no demand for mid-high end Android Tablet

  • No expandable storage.. probably need to go with the 256GB, hey?

    • +2

Always a downside of Xiaomi. If you feel you need the extra 128GB go for it. I have 128GB on my phone and tablet - both are enough. Things like Google Photos I have in the cloud to reduce clutter.

      • What tablet do you own

        • +1

Blackview Tab 11. Quite surprisingly I don't have a massive need for tablets so I went for something more basic that was good for the price at the time. Had the Xiaomi Pad 5 been out when the Blackview was released I would have jumped on it.

          • @Clear: So do you think this tablet is better then this one for a similar price:
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/691319
I really want to get one soon but can't decide and my budget is $500 max

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yeah I am of the opinion the Xiaomi Pad 5 is better. This has a proper release Global ROM, the IPS panel looks better than the cheaper OLED and you'll get more updates. Downside is the SD860 isn't as good as the SD870 in the Lenovo, there's no GPS and storage isn't expandable.

              • @Clear: What's wrong with OLED? Is the ips here that much better?

                • @quill: It's a cheaper OLED panel. Being Pentile means the text may look a bit more blurry.

                  • @Clear: How many types of OLED are available on tablets? Just pentile and AMOLED?

                    • +1

@quill: Pentile is just the subpixel order as you can see here compared with RGB. It's possible to have pentile in an LCD.

                      There's OLED, AMOLED and POLED.

i paid $463.40 only 6 days ago.. as an ozbarginer, i am going to buy another one for my mum now

    • +1

A week ago I didn't know about this sale unfortunately. Otherwise I would have held off.

      • lol … fully understand
i paid $559 for a chromebook duet 5 … and only 3 days later, the upgraded 8GB/256GB version for the same price… this is life

  • -1

Does this come with a pen?? If so how is it for note taking as a uni student?

    • +1

No pen included but there is a Xiaomi Smart Pen designed specifically for the Pad 5. A quick look on AliExpress shows me this listing where it's US$63.27 (~A$84.74) with the coupon ANNI6

It's possible other sellers may have it cheaper. A general rule of thumb is to avoid sellers with <95% feedback as they're more likely to be dodgy.

  • will cashback work on this one?

    • AU$ based on current Mastercard rate, GST inclusive and does not stack with cashback.

      Sadly not.

      • Apologies, I even re-read it before asking and still missed this. Cheers.

  • Good for gaming?

    • Yep definitely.

  • code no longer valid

    • Have you used it elsewhere? There's another 13 coupons you can use for the same discount.

  • Do you have to pay VAT or GST?

    • +1

      10% GST.

  • How would you compare this to Lenovo Tab P11 if it was going to be used for just comics/manga and watching media on, mostly the former. No gaming or working on.

    • I don't have either of these devices in hand, but for that use case either would do the job just fine.

It Might be worth looking up reviews on the screens of both as that would be the main potential differentiator in your use case. Both have plenty of processing power for those tasks.

  • How would this compare to a Samsung Tab S7 for media consumption (YT/Netflix) and some light work (Docs/Sheets/Slides)?

    • +2

I think the biggest concern for the Xiaomi would be the flakey widevine L1 support (basically what's needed to stream anything more than SD quality on Netflix and other streaming services), hopefully it gets fixed up in a patch, but you are taking a risk.

Lenovo hasn't fixed their widevine issues in months and months.

Other than that, the Samsung will get much longer software and security update support, I think Samsung is promising 5 years now. I think most people would also prefer the Samsung skin on Android to Miui.

Also buying from Ali express you are basically forfeiting your Australian consumer rights, it's not right, but it's how it goes. If you need warranty you are at the mercy of the seller, they may just decide to not reply to your messages, at best you'll be up for posting the tablet back to China and waiting a month or two.

All this is mind though, you are paying substantially more for the Samsung, they are basically double the price.

      • I think the biggest concern for the Xiaomi would be the flakey widevine L1 support

Exactly why i keep telling people. If they want hassle free fhd or higher netflix resolution. They dont want to have to fiddle with widevine certificates. Or having to install apk from who knows where only for it to get blocked later on. Sometimes people just dont have the time for that.

As for buying from places like aliexpress and other similar selling platforms. If warranty is important to you. Buy locally.

        • Appreciate the responses here. Definitely don't want to have to fiddle around with anything just to get my primary use-case to work and the Aussie warranty is a good point for something over a few hundred bucks.

Gonna stick to the S7. Thanks!

  • How would this compare to the Lenovo ChromeBook Duet 5 8GB/256GB? The recent one $559 with keyboard and pen?

Duet 5 better for office use but Xiaomi Pad 5 better for gaming?

Screen quality maybe similar? Or Duet 5 better?

  • -1

Expensive and not reliable. Quality sucks

    • 'Expensive'

      • +2

Well to be fair, $430 is getting awfully close to the $469 for a 9th gen iPad, yes some of the Technical specs on this are better, but we all know apple software can do more with less.

You also get 5+ years of software and security updates and a much more polished UI overall… So maybe $430 for this china tab is "expensive"

No I'm not some blind apple fanboy, I've literally never owned a single apple product actually, I am however looking at this objectively I think.

        • Yeah, fair enough. The main advantage this Xiaomi has is it's got a bigger screen and double the storage.

I'd probably go for a new iPad if not for those giant bezels.

  • Currently coming up as 434.98, am I picking the correct version (green, global, 128)?

    • +1

change currency to USD on aliexpress and use a credit card without foreign currency charges. Choosing anything other than USD on aliexpress will see it converted at an unfavourable rate

      • +1

        Legend thanks

  • +1

Damn you, Clear. I'd been convincing myself to just make do with the toys I have, and then you have to go and post this! Finally cracked and bought it this time.

  • +1

Damn you clear :). I bought one in your last sale for a little more hahaha. But at lease I have it in my hand and using it. Just love this tablet.

  • Any advice for something cheaper? Just want it got the kids to watch Peppa and bluey

  • This vs the Pro model?

  • Got mine delivered this morning very happy so far. Screen is crisp and little bloatware.

When I launch Netflix (pre installed) it says not compatible

    • You'll need to sideload a new version ontop. This one works

      • Legend.

Now to get some other good apps :)

  • Mine just arrived today, and I suspect it's a refurb and not a new one. No seals on the box other than a single small normal paper sticker that barely wrapped around one side (box could still open without tearing it). The protective film covering the main unit was covered in fingerprints as soon as I'd taken the lid off the box, I hadn't even touched the tablet.

No protective film on the camera lens though, which is unusual.

Turned it on and looked in settings to make sure I'd got the right ram/storage combo, which checked out. But the battery screen said it had been powered on for over 2 hours since it was last charged (and battery was at 25pc). Serial number in the settings does not match the sticker serial number on the back of the tablet.

A few days after I'd ordered, I was messaged on AliExpress by the seller saying there were no black models available (despite it still being an option on the listing at that time, as well as when I ordered) and would I like a white or grey instead. I said no, I only wanted black, and they said I'd need to wait a bit longer, or cancel the order. I chose to wait, but now I'm worried they made a refurb instead of actually just getting more stock. The box had fairly bashed up corners, too, despite being shipped in the super padded bubble thing.

I've contacted the seller, but just wondering what condition other people's tablets had arrived in and whether what I got is normal and I'm just being paranoid?

    • Ok looks like I didn't read the description properly. It's a Chinese model with global ROM flashed, so this all makes sense now. I must have confused myself browsing multiple sellers ' listings when doing the shopping and thought this was an actual global version.
