  • Listing says both the 128GB and 256GB have 6GB RAM?

    • +1

Yeah typo on my end. Both 6GB RAM.

      • +16

Grats. This is your 27,000th comment on OzB. Thanks for your efforts :)

        • +15

Wow so it is. At least it was a productive comment admitting fault :P

          • @Clear: I'm new here and curious why you have so many tablet posts. Do you contact AliExpress and ask them for deals to post here. Do you get any commission on these?

            • +32

@[Deactivated]: A combination of asking stores for deals and finding them myself. I've worked with Chinese brands officially on OzBargain and have declared myself as Associated when required. However I'm not getting paid or any commission for the posts I make here.

I've been doing Chinese tech as a hobby for nearly 10 years and was previously a writer for a large Chinese tech news site.

  • +5

Great tablet, unfortunately for me no GPS.

    • +4

What's a GPS for in tablet

      • +10

Haven't you seen a Tesla with a bigazz iPad right in the middle of the dash?
I need a tablet with GPS so I could turn my Torana into a Tesla-esque.

        • +4

          Love to see it 🤣

        • +1

Get a bluetooth GPS receiver is important - they are more accurate too.

      • +1

More than a few people fit them to trucks, car dashboards where the double DIN stereo would have been, boat helms, I've even seen holders that fit to the yoke of small airplanes… for GPS software, music, internet, movies, etc. Oh and motorhomes for all the above, plus handsfree phone calls via bluetooth.

      • I use tablets with gps units all the time with mapping apps like oziexplorer and Avenza

    • Just have to spoof it then! Wheeee!

    • I'm waiting for these to come down in price, or maybe secondhand: https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_s7-10337.php

  • Thanks OP, I've been tossing up between getting this and a keyboard or the Lenovo Duet 5 chromebook. Looking for something as a daily driver: media consumption, light office tasks, Internet browsing etc. Thoughts on what is the better option? Can you get a good keyboard attachment for this?

    • I would pick this in your situation. 120Hz screen, more RAM, and while I haven't completely been keeping in touch with ChromeOS, I still feel Android is more capable.

    • +2

I haven't use Chromebooks enough to be able to compare properly, but I do see people complain about them being slow or not really suitable for Android apps due to lacklaster hardware. I see Android apps on a Chromebook more as a bonus as opposed to a feature since they're not designed specifically for them.

The only gotcha I'd say about this tablet is no GPS and the Widevine L1 in its current version is buggy. I believe it should be properly fixed in the Android 12L release. Xiaomi have an official keyboard for this tablet that snaps in via Pogo pins. A quick look at AliExpress and they're going for about US$80. Otherwise you can grab unbranded ones like this (after a quick search) that have the touchpad and backlit keyboard.

      • Thanks both! I am loving the specs of this unit. Are the concerns about android only receiving limited software support warranted? Will this unit still be in good working order in 3-5 years? I believe chrome OS gets like 8 years of support from a units release date.

        • +2

As with all things Android you'll get a few years of updates. We already know Android 12L is coming so I'd expect Android 13 as well. It'll also depend on the development community as well. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 released with Android 8.1 and there's unofficial Android 11 ROMs like LineageOS available.

It'll certainly get better updates than Lenovo who only provide a single update. The cheaper brands like Alldocube, Teclast, Chuwi, Blackview etc. will never get the next version.

        • I have a Huawei tablet that's 4 years old and still haven't come across an app that wouldn't run. Granted I don't do any banking on it, security updates is maybe 6 months behind.

      • Hard to know which are the official keyboards on Aliexpress

    • +2

Gotta remember the screen size is bigger and with a widescreen ration on the duet 5 compared to this, so less portable. Screen is AMOLED, so naturally warmer and better blacks compared to this screen. Note it's 1080p on a 13.3 inch screen so DPI will be worse compared to the Xiaomi. Note the ratio on the duet 5 is 16:9. The duet 5 reviews as having good performance, excellent battery life and also comes with great keyboard and okish trackpad. As a daily driver that does it all, I'd go the duet for the great screen real estate and functional keyboard experience. Just note the differences above. Constant (feels like weekly?) updates pushed and will be so for the next several years. Lenovo warranty if that means anything to you. Bit more expensive. The other important thing to note is that most corporations that have a MDM solution won't work with chromeOS if they use InTune/company portal - so that means you might not get access to work email/calendar/cloud doc's etc… I assume it would work with the Xiaomi, being an Android device.

      • +1

Thank you very much. I think for the reasons you've stated that the Lenovo might be the most sensible option for my use case.

  • +7

    My 5 cents:

I like the design, like the specifications,
but every couple of years I try MIUI and it's just so frustrating.

Skinning it with Axis makes it better but underlying setting are still a headache.
You change something in all available menus but still some functions / notifications / bluetooth/ hotspot won't work consistently and reliebly.
Can't switch between apps to copy /paste (2tier verification aso) because often as you switch apps the other app is unloaded from memory and reloaded (forcing a restart of 2tier verification aso.)

Waiting for my S22 to arrive so I can exit this daily fight I'm having with Redmi Note

Even though tempted - I would not go for Xiaomi for anything beyond most basic video and social media consumption, definitely wouldn't hope to do any content creation on it

    • I'm hopeful that MIUI based around Android 12L will offer a much better experience given it's designed specifically for tablets.

because often as you switch apps the other app is unloaded from memory and reloaded

Went from OnePlus to Samsung and this happens all the time. 100% guaranteed if you're switching from an app to the camera and back.

      • Another Australian user who has tried OnePlus. Nice :)

My current phone is a OnePlus 7 Pro. This will be my last OnePlus phone though, the company has failed in my eyes now.

        • -1

A lot of OzBargainers use OnePlus. I switched when my OnePlus 6 died and I really needed a phone. Otherwise I would have gone for the 7 or 8.

I saw that they backtracked on the Oxygen-ColorOS merger so I'd be willing to try again.

          • @Clear: That's right, they did. One of their best moves in recent years lol.

Didn't realize so many people used OnePlus. I was basing it off people I meet irl. I find many people using Google Pixels, but no-one else on OnePlus.

            • @Zackeroo: If OnePlus launched in AU ever again I could see it being popular with Pixel owners. Pixel is better than Samsung at least.

              • @Clear: Fair. OnePlus is clearly going through a lot right now, so that would be the last thing on their mind. They released the OnePlus 5 in Australia AFAIK, but nothing else. I bought mine from Kogan a while back.

                • @Zackeroo: I was always Nokia, after they closed shop and I had to put aside my N95 (or N98?) I eventually found HTC whom i stayed with until the M10 - My current 10e is the first and last Samsung phone ill ever buy. Currently looking for a replacement, need a powerful unit to open design schematics for work, would you and Clear recommended a pixel be the replacement?

    • +5

MIUI uses aggressive memory limiting to save battery. You have to go into dev options and uncheck "MIUI optimization" then set app permissions to have them kept in memory so they don't restart when you exit. Holding the app window then selecting the "lock" icon allows you to do this as well afaik

      • +1

I don't use MIUI but this seems like the exact issue they were describing. Thanks for this! :)

        • No prob. These MIUI/Oxygen/whatever roms work well once you sort out all the kinks and you're updated on what breaks them. Been a MIUI user for 6 years and counting now.

    • +1

but every couple of years I try MIUI and it's just so frustrating.

I couldn't agree more!!! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that goes through this cycle. My wife and I have finally, officially written off Xiaomi phones and tables due to this.

  • What’s everyone’s experience with MIUI vs Vanilla Android?

Also, is it a pain to go through RMA/Warranty claims if there are hardware issues?

    • +1

I'm dealing with a defect on my lenovo p11 plus tablet. Less than 1 month + usage, the screen doesn't work. I'm now at the mercy of the seller to send me a new unit. Reported the issue on early March and till now no resolution. Careful when spending so much money on a product which doesn't have any warranty or after sales support.

In relation to update, tho the tablet is on Android 11, the security updates stuck on 2020.

      • Thanks for sharing.

Main reason I have stuck with iPhone/iPad is the ease of warranty claim or getting it fixed/replaced with a refurb easily when there are hardware issues.

    • +1

Id say MIUI gets a very good battery life.
It's a solid choice for someone who does no mutitasking.
Xiaomi is something I would recommend to my mother if the cameras weren't so average.
It is very aggressive on memory and battery management side.
Good if you just need the device for calls and casual video consumption. But my experience is that even with models with 6gb memory they bog down quite quickly and feel unbearably sluggish if you have had an opportunity to try something better.
My guess is that since most apps are offloaded from memory very quickly and don't autostart on power on, it just takes a couple of seconds to load them after tap.

      • +1

Get Google Camera and the appropriate configuration file someone's made for the device and the camera is amazing. I do it for all my Android phones.

  • Good price on this, would rate it higher than lenovos. Would easily jump on this if I hadn't already got the S8 ultra for ~$700

    • ? Where'd you snag that?

    • That was with the bundle deal right? Otherwise how did you get an S8 Tab Ultra for $700?

      • -2

Yup bundle. The 128gb S8 came to $1003 after "trade in" credit, 20% off epp and 20% off bundle. Sold the S22 for $300 profit

        • So you got it for $1003, not ~ $700…

          • -1

@reloxation: Well no. My net loss is $700 for the tablet after everything is sold. I got buyers for the watch and buds so I got my money back on those

            • +1

@krisspy: Yes, but it is not a certainty that you will be able to make $300 profit off the phone. I'd describe the cost you "got" the item for as how much you paid the store…

              • -2

@reloxation: That's why I said "I" got it. I would've said "You" can get it for xxxx if I wanted to do a PSA

                • +4

@krisspy: Dude, you're on OzBargain. Don't get people hyped with BS prices, be descriptive…

                  • @reloxation: Are you kidding? I constantly see people geting large upvotes for pimping questionable discounts, ebay and cash back are just a couple I can think of immediately.
The member provided useful details when asked, don't discourage that by attacking them over trivial semantics.

                    • -1

@Ebany: It's not trivial semantics imho. Hassling and reselling to make money to buy something is not legitimate "deal"

P.S. One cold get the tablet even cheaper if you sold your TV and nonnas set of collectable spoons!

                      • +1

@ripprind: We're OzBer's, anyone watching the prices knows an S8 ultra at 700 would be the most upvoted item for the month, and given how there's no posting for one at that price then the information on how the user did it was important to me (and likely others).

Something in me broke when I realised I was too late for JuJu's 1k computer but im not about to abuse them for low stock etc. Knowing theres a sydney local doing deals on premade system is the most vital piece of info, so we just file it as useful and keep watching.

                      • +1

@ripprind: @ripprind well then let's not stop there if we're talking semantics. Get rid of all the Samsung deals on bonus trade in deals since not everyone has access to a phone they can trade in right? In saying that the tablet should've been $1200.

Or even hitting up Samsung chat and sweet talking the rep in the hopes of getting a $100/200 loyalty discount.

The phone came as part of the bundle, we're not talking about hocking unrelated items to raise funds. Getting a bidg enough discount from Samsung to undercut Street price is cherry on top.

Most who knew about the deal only wanted 1 item from the bundle, they were organising with other people to sell and split for only the items they needed. In saying that is the deal still valid if you only want the tablet but not the other 3 items? You would still have to go through the hassle of selling other items just to get the tab cheaper. I did what others were doing to obtain the deals on the individual items, only I took the scummy route and made a profit.

  • +5

This or IPad 9 ? both are same price

    • Was thinking of same thing

      • mine is on the way anyway, I ordered a IPad 9 from last week's AP deal

    • I'm in the same boat. Looking to replace the 2 old ipad 2s my kids are using as have as they are slow, poor battery, can't run some apps, or update to newer apps versions.

I'm leaning towards ipad from simplicity, familiarity, and I know they can take a beating but these recent deals have me reconsidering.

    • Ipad all the way. I've had android tablets before and they all become terribly slow and buggy eventually.

  • @Clear: what's the latest tablet in general to allow custom roms? I hear the latest Samsung tabs allow for
lineageOS but the last one not Samsung should be the Mipad4?

    • +2

Samsung is definitely the most supported. You can follow development of them on xda-developers. Mipad 4 still has an active community with Android 11 LineageOS available. Even the Nexus 7 2013 has Android 12L running on it now.

      • Damnit all. Looks like the new tabs with better hardware are locked and stuck on android 11/12 forever.

        • Tablets were unpopular for a while and stock ROMs used to be really unstable. Hopefully we'll get a few more.

  • +3

in phone and tablet where the high spec is no longer the most important thing. The UX is everything. I had some Xiaomi devices, can say they impress me with their modern and simplified design, but their UI is the worst thing, so frustrated.

  • This Tablet or Blackview Tab 11?

    • Easily this.

  • This or a second hand 2018 ipad pro? Around a 100 bucks more. I know it's an odd comparison but I'm looking for a tablet around the 500 mark for general use.

    • mostly a choice between ipados and android. ipados is great for kids because ipads are locked down hard. android you can hook up to a pc and transfer files. android you can download and install apks. apple you're stuck with apple store.

  • This or the s8 tab for 700?

  • +2

This or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE $499 deal with bonus micro SD posted recently, Amazon still to fulfill that order, so don't know if I should cancel Amazon and get this one. Thank you.

    • +1

I'm no expert, but a quick spec comparison on gsm arena tells me the Xiaomi has slightly better hardware in it, but the Tab S7 has a micro SD slot and local warranty, the latter I highly value which would lead me to keeping the S7 order going ahead.

    • +1

How important is a big screen to you? Is it worth trading over 120hz and better CPU?

If all you do is watch videos then the bigger screen might be better for you.

      • the importance is for performance to run various school apps, like maths etc. Gets very frustrating with lag of some tablets and need something that doesn't slow down.

        • You might be better off with the xiaomi if that's the case. More ram and a better CPU

  • It says Global Version. Is this equivalent to global ROM? I don't trust global rom because the seller tweaks it to the state where the tablet can never be updated via OTA.

    • This is the official Global Version.

  • Anyone have experience on this for note taking for University and annotating PDF textbooks?
Or have any other suggestions in similar price range?

    • +1

second hand ipad and apple pencil

  • -1

Not even super AMOLED and no SD card expansion and no GPS, that is not good at all.

  • Thanks OP. Any recommendations on cases?

  • This or Ipad pro 2019 with 64gb wifi for 550 aud that i can find on FB? for med student taking notes and video watching

    • -1

3 years old vs new? hmmm what would I choose…. lol

    • +1

Compare the apps you want to use via some reviews and see how they fair. The ipad is arguably better hardware, faster chip, better stylus input, but second hand can complicate things, plus 64gb is a bit anemic…

I'm trying to decide between these two as well. For me I just want a good screen that I can use for wireless, onsite video monitoring for clients. But there's really no comparison that I've found between the apps I need to use for ios vs android…

  • This or tab s8 for $688 from edu Samsung store?

  • Can anyone recommend a large screen android tablet which supports compass/GPS/magnetometer/accelerometer so I use use it with my astrophotography at remote locations?

    • The tab s7 fe support some if not all of that. Was on sale for $499

  • The USB-C port runs at USB2.0, why oh why. Otherwise good tablet I think. Afaik Lenovo has a similar tablet that is probably better?

  • this new version of Android is designed specifically for tablets.

    Like Honeycomb? :)

Zoe Washburne: Oh yeah, this is gonna go great.

    • I never got to use Honeycomb but I believe it was a mess right? Android has certainly matured since then.

      • Honeycomb was awful but very innovative.

Yeah, it has matured significantly. I'm just doubtful that a tablet-specific version of Android - again - will be a better idea this time.

        • From what I've seen so far from the betas it looks very promising. Given Xiaomi and Lenovo already have PC modes within their ROMs I'd expect it to be good. We'll just have to see.

          • @Clear: I hope you're right. My Mi Pad 4 could use a facelift :)

  • Anything similar to this but with 4G?

  • +1

I had a Teclast tablet which failed to run the Optus sport app. If you buy from a less popular brand be prepared for issues.

  • How would it compare to this? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003269524651.html
Specs looks good and the keyboard has a trackpad, the lack of trackpad on the pad 5 keyboard puts me off.
I'm concerned about the support from Lenovo on updates however after reading some other posts.

  • This or Galaxy Tab S8 for $700? Which one is better?
