Facebook Marketplace Selling - Timewasters

Hi guys so I sell quite a lot on second markets and facebook.

Pass few days I have been getting nothing but time wasters and rude people, two people have said car issues and cant make it now. Likely fake but who knows.
one person said yes to deal than 2 hours later finally replies after no show and says do it for $50 less and he will come.
One I tried to sell a tv to and he didn't make it and I stayed up till 10pm waiting for him, next day no show again, he replied saying sorry was drunk.
next someone needs video proof of a console working even though the pictures shown it.

What is going on with the marketplace lately? its legit just been this week I have had nothing but issues with people not showing up, wasting my time and being rude or lying.

How do I deal with it? just say ok and move on?

I have few people just buy things simple give me money and leave, no issues but this week has been bad.

That's how it works in open marketplaces. Think old day bazaars, how many timewasters sift through products at shops, ask tons of questions, haggle then don't buy anything. Same thing.

Want to avoid it? Pay huge fees by listing purely on eBay.

    • +13

eBay buyers can be just as bad. They will commit to a purchase but simply not pay. We give them 4 days and if not paid we cancel the sale and put them on our blocked buyers list.

      • +5

There is an option to require immediate payment with PayPal which eliminates this issue.

        • +2

Not if it is purchased via an offer, which is a large amount of sales on there these days, there is no option to require immediate payment then.

        • +1

Not if the buyer wishes to purchase multiple items and have combined postage, and/or requesting an invoice

          • +2

            @idonotknowwhy: Of course you can.

            • @Hybroid: I think s/he means that while buyers can still pay with PayPal the seller can no longer recieve the funds into their PayPal account.

          • +4

@idonotknowwhy: damn, someone better tell this to paypal and ebay then as I just used it about an hour ago.

      • +5

eBay buyers can be just as bad.

        Or a lot worse!

They buy, you post and then later they ask for a return ticket.
        A lot worse.

        • +2

But if you are playing the game right they are paying huge premiums to cover it .

      • +1

Ebay is Worse. My god. Its listed for peanuts its not a high end fashion label where im going to be able to tell you what specific goat in the Himalayas the effing material is from.

Or, they buy a product second hand and then complain about the manufactured quality because they expected their $15 item to be ‘better quality’

      • Never understood why eBay doesn't take payment automatically for every sale.

I know sellers can force it on buy it now listings but not for auctions.

        GraysOnline do it for everything.

    • +10

I'm just absolutely clear in my item description of:

The general area where I live
That if the ad is up it's still available.
Anything else specific to how it works for that item

Any questions outside of setting up a time I don't bother responding to. It's not a negotiation, don't give them any rope, I will not inconvenience myself for a Facebook buyer unless it's clear they're professional and genuinely interested.

Works about 4% of the time.

  • +4

‘ How do I deal with it? just say ok and move on?’

What would the alternative be ?

    • -2

idk maybe say something better than remove them from the messager or leave myself
or a way to kindly say stop wasting my time? i dont know.

      • +4

Yeah, that’s actually a very good question.
I unironically believe in ‘changing people with kindness’. (Except for the one-off temperamental bursts)
Hasn't ever really worked out for me.

        So I don’t know.

      • +13

They don't care. They're not worried about your time, only their own and getting the lowest price.

You really need to say ok and move on. If someone doesn't show up with cash at the time they say then sell to someone else immediately. If you didn't have another buyer, they're you're no better or worse off.

I know it's easy for me to say and far more difficult to come to terms with (it's something I struggle with, the "waiting" for the tyre kickers who never give you anything, but unless they're at my door with cash in hand they're not a buyer and they don't have any right to what I'm selling, they're just sending queries which is part of any sale.

      • +2

Don't go out of your way and then you won't be annoyed because they haven't really dicked you around.

    • +3

You need thick skin to be a seller on Farcebook/Scumtree & ignore the crap!!

If I had a dollar for all that ghost, I'd be a millionaire.

Now I expect the chance a buyer doesn't show quite high.

  • +42

when someone says they are interested then give them a day and time for pick up (confirm with them that is okay).

give them the suburb and your phone number and tell them to text you when they are on their way and you'll send the address.

    saves the waiting around.

    • +12

      100% this.

If someone can’t commit to a time and day and isn’t willing to communicate by txt or call for the final details, bollocks to them.*

*in saying that, i take a few other things into consideration such as:
      - Profile pic (get an idea of the type of person your dealing with)
      - Communication (if they are fast replying and willing to chat the details out and come same day i might skip the call/txt)
      - Attitude /manners (don’t go out of my way for rude people)

Broke my own selling rules twice this week and got stood up twice… serves me right for not following my usual selling protocol 😂

      • your fine giving them your number? what if they bug for return refund or something?

        • +8

I don’t sell anything thats not in good condition or i think will imminently break.

Even if i did by accident, i would just roll with the circumstances.
          -Legitimately was broken? Refund
          -Questionably broken? Nothing
          -Change of mind? Nope

In saying that, I’ve never had a call or txt for refund/return to date.

Think of it the other way too, it puts a bit of identity and responsibility on the buyer that you have their number.
Someone coming to possibly steal/defraud/be a PITA is unlikely to want to give you their number as it’s easily traced back to them.

          • +1

            @El cheepo:

give them the suburb and your phone number and tell them to text you when they are on their way…

100% with this, however altomic appears to give his number first, which may not necessarily be reciprocated by the buyer?

            Happy to learn otherwise.

            • +1

@Member 0230: Thats the risk you run i guess.

I haven’t been burned by giving my number out yet.
In any case i figure I’ll just block any unwanted persons anyway.

            • +1

@Member 0230: I confirm the time, date + surburb first. then give phone number. they then have to text me when their leaving for the suburb to therefore get the address (they provide their phone number when doing so, which also means they are not going to stuff me around - i.e.they are certainly on their way)

using this method I've only had 1 out of ~30 not actually turn up

              • @altomic: Good approach. They can, of course, use a throwaway SIM, etc., but your experience shows this is not super likely.

          • @El cheepo: Tbh, someone having your address is problematic. No matter how good the sale item is, there are twats around. I’m not worried about myself as I’m happy to deal with the twats face to face, but when you aren’t around, it can cause issues.

            • @Vote for Pedro: I have the same concerns to be honest.

Thats another reason why i go for a phone number and through my little process before handing out my address. And if i am a little bit fishy about someone i just give them the street or a shop address and meet them there.

              • @El cheepo: yeah, I do check out the profile of buyers. if they seem ok then address, if they seem dodgy then the milk bar 100metres up the road.

  • +6

next someone needs video proof of a console working even though the pictures shown it.

    This is fair TBH.

Anything sold (bar a car) on marketplaces like facebook are sold "as is" so it's perfectly reasonable to want to see the item in working order.

I sold a washing machine recently and was surprised they didn't want to see it plugged in and at least working but I would have been happy if they wanted to.

How do I deal with it? just say ok and move on?

I've had the opposite. I've sold several white goods and random things. The easier was the washing machine. A few messages, they turned up a few hours later and I was $200 better off and they had a washing machine.

I guess make sure your ads are clear with details. If it's a product, list to the manufacturers site so they can see dimensions and stats, mention pickup suburb etc.

You'll always get tire kickers though.

    • You'll always get tire kickers though.

Yep. I have literally listed the location of the item in the ad (to suburb level) and had people ask where it is, and then bail out because they thought it was too far away.

      • +4

Description: This is a link to the product from the manufactuers site.
        Message: What are the dimensions?

        • +1

Haha I think facebook marketplace is secretly a long term experiment by some researchers to study the average reading comprehension levels of the population

        • Thats because links aren't clickable in marketplace and you are better off positing the details

    • What makes you think cars are excluded from being sold 'as is'?

  • I refuse to use them. Even today I was looking at some boxes of stuff and thought 'Ebay, Etsy…?' Nope - I'm just going to take them to the auction houses and let them off it. Otherwise - Vinnies.

You have to place a value on your time. And my time is worth more than dealing with fools on these marketplaces.

    • Auction houses ? I have never been to one.
Can you sell your ordinary domestic appliances/furniture there ?

      • +2

Certainly can if you're willing to pay the fees. Some of that junk goes for stupid amounts though.

  • +3

Why are you selling on their time?

Set a timeframe that you are good for and if they can't make it move on to the next.

Never have i ever had anyone buy stuff at my home after 6pm.

  • +4

What is going on with the marketplace lately?

incredibly low bar of entry, and absolutely no penalty for lack of commitment or not following through on offers or plans.

When i sell stuff on there, I often list it pretty cheap as I just want to get rid of it.
Generally I wont give anyone an address or time unless they are 100% interested and will be turning up within the next ~day at that point, they get a time that suits me (ie ill be home anyway).. I never go out of my way or make plans outside times that suit me.
Any other interested parties get told on hold for a day, and they get same treatment in order if the first one falls through.

You end up wasting 'facebook messenger' time, but I never waste actual physical face to face time

    • i think its more like yes its gonna sell and ima make money! and get it out of my hands and than its disappointment when buyer donst show or want it anymore.
i sell lots and for years on here, but i still have those feelings lol

    • what do i say to someone if they say yes they will buy it and meet at this time, but they never show or reply until hours later?

      • Tell them U will msg the address when they are ready to go?

      • If they haven't arrived within 15min of agreed time, and aren't responding, why waste your time? Just what your usually doing. And plan the time to be when your gonna be at home for a few hours anyway, so you don't have to really think about it if they don't arrive.

@Rukiata: I had a car listed for $15000. Had someone message and ask if I'll take $12500 for it, I said yes but that would be the lowest I would accept.

Person came out for a test drive, said they like it and offered $11000. I told them that I already said $12500 was the lowest, to which the girl replied I only have $11000. I told them that she'd just wasted all of our time and walked away.

I sold the car an hour later for $12500.

    • +2

This is annoying, but it's by design - FB prefills the message box on the item detail page with that text, so if someone wants to express interest but is too lazy to write a proper message (or just taps the button accidentally while browsing - I've done it), that's the message you get.

    • +4

This is legit.. most people often forget to take the ad down or mark the item as sold, wasting everyone's time too..

    • This would happen less if lazy sellers took their ad down once sold.

I never ask that question though. Ask a half decent question, and if it's gone they'll tell you (usually!), even if it is a disappointment.

    • This is the one that kills me on the inside. I can't tell if they're real or some kind of bots??

Thursday at 9pm I create the listing
    3 hours later

    12:34am ?
    1:05am ????????????????

Wasn't even just one person someone else copied it. But added a sure I'll take it off your hands.

I guess they thought I had nothing better to do then to be up until 2am waiting for their replies.

I made the listing at around 9pm but thought I wont get any replies until tomorrow so I wont bother to check and that is what greeted me the following day.
Quick I need a two and a half year old CPU at 12am on a Friday it's urgent!

I am not a I want the best price I'll look it up and say There is nothing wrong with it but I just don't think item is worth $350. I'll sell it for $275 then after 2 mins decide meh $225 and I'll accept $210..
So maybe this attracts people going deal of the century!! If I don't spam ?'s at them every few mins I might miss out on it? Or would it be the exact same if I listed it at $350?

  • +3

I had somebody buy a phone off me one time, ghosted my forever and then rocked up an hour after I messaged them saying tough I am tired of waiting for them.

On the doorstep then proceeded to try and negotiate price further. Told them that is fine if they don't want it at the agreed price they can leave - eventually gave me the money.

The only worse thing than selling on FB is trying to give something away, had an old lazyboy couch and received probably 200 messages but took a week for somebody to collect

    • had someone argeed to a price for an item i was selling, turns up with only half the cash and expected me to give it to them. yeah no sale.

      • +1

Yep had that too. I pointed them in the direction of the nearest ATM

  • I try to work with only the keen FBM buyers. Ie you pickup on the cue s for tine wasters and don't engage or "park them". You can park people by saying "oh got a bloke coming tomorrow I can msg you if it falls thru?"

  • Its just part and parcel of dealing with 2nd hand market places, you are going to get many idiots wasting your time.
The best thing you can do is ignore and never deal with them again.

  • +2

Best tip to sell on Facebook is to not reply to anyone who makes a price offering even though your ad says "price is firm". Just ghost them because they can't even read.

Or sell it on Ebay my experience is you get half the amount of enquiries but the quality is much higher. Worth the fees.

  • "One I tried to sell a tv to and he didn't make it and I stayed up till 10pm waiting for him, next day no show again, he replied saying sorry was drunk."
I had a PS4 for sale and had a guy make me wait until really late too and then eventually said the same… very odd

  • +1

Maybe reduce the asking price to the point where it becomes ultra competitive for people to come?

Also asking to see a console working is a perfectly fine request.

  • +2

You are only getting timewasters the last few days!!? Try dealing with it the last few years… it's gotten just absurd during The Pandemic YearsTM, people appear to have given up on even the most basic of human communication protocols and instead i just receive messages like "20 bucks" or "lowest price" (not to mention the endless stream of people pressing the "hi is this still available?" button)

  • Don't know what's worse, FBM timewasters or play the eBay roulette and hope the buyer doesn't lodge a dispute?

  • Unfortunately buyers think it is a buyers market and they hold all the cards.

  • +1

I find there is a correlation between the quality of the ad and the responses. Take time to put in all the info and pictures one could need and advise people you wont respond to 'is it available' questions.

  • +2

I am slowly clearing my home of items I won’t use again and get the usual time wasters for some things, but not others. In fact have met some really decent people with whom it was a pleasure to deal.
I think that some goods are of universal interest like phones, computers and the like - and the mix of people include people that have not learnt respect for self or others.
Some of the things I sell are of no interest to most people, but are valuable to a smaller group of people - and these are often (not always) pretty reasonable to deal with.

BTW I never, ever give my address to anyone. I direct them to an adjacent street when they sms me that they are on their way.

I sell a lot of stuff on marketplace/gumtree and here are some tips I use
    - Don't hand out an address until the buyer is ready to come and pick up the goods. I find that a lot of buyers don't show up and so I am not handing my address out to someone who is not going to show up
    - Block timewasters and lowballers so you don't have to deal with them in the future. I have had the same person contact me multiple times about items and just waste my time.
    - If someone negotiates a price, make it only for 24 hours, if they are keen and you have given them a good price they will make the effort to turn up, if they are not willing to pick it up in 24 hours then they are not that keen and just kicking tires.
    - No holds whatsoever, first come, first serve.

    • +1

Agree on the blocking time wasters . I have had people ask me 3 or 4 times if something is available on the same items i have re-listed and then proceed to ghost me every time

  • +2

One I tried to sell a tv to and he didn't make it and I stayed up till 10pm waiting for him, next day no show again, he replied saying sorry was drunk.

This is why, whenever I have a committed buyer, I have them work to my schedule. I recently sold a cabinet, and told them pick-up between 4 to 8pm. Make them work to your schedule, not theirs.

When it comes to pricing - the same cabinet, IKEA offer a buy-back scheme where you may return the good for IKEA credit. The valuation came back at $50 IKEA credit - I had it listed for $50. Every time a lowball offer came my way, I simply said "IKEA will take the cabinet back to me for $50 store credit. If no one purchases it by the end of the week at $50, I'm happy for them to buy it for more from IKEA." Obviously, not every item has a similar negotiation tool ready to go - but hold firm and if you have a price in mind, don't budge. As the buyer, they are free to ask for a lower price. As the seller, you are free to reject the lower offer. Take the emotion out of it. People have a hard time simply saying "No" for some reason.

Otherwise, it's simply a numbers game. Just ignore the time-wasters/ low ballers and wait for the genuine sellers to come through.

    • That is a genuine reason .

  • Lately? Been this way for years. I hate the damn auto reply buttons. So many people click is it available with no intention of buying. They are just scanning market place for an item and asking dozens of people until they find one that's cheap as chips. Maybe I operate differently but i dont bother asking people I'd something is available unless I genuinely want to buy the item from them. And if I'm not going to be able to buy from them(which has happened less than I can count on one hand) I let then know. I believe if you enter a deal, you follow through or at least have the decency to let the seller know you have changed your mind.

My bigger issue is sellers who seem happy to wait around for buyers rather than go with someone who will either pay a deposit of pickup steiaght away. And more than that sellers who dont mark things pending or sold until it's been picked up. Some sellers seem to like having backups just in case the original buyer doesnt turn up, yet they wont bit her replying to you even though you can see they have read your enquiry. Marketplace is definately a frustrating place.

    • +1

happy to wait around for buyers rather than go with someone who will either pay a deposit of pickup steiaght away

That's more efficient for society overall. You don't want to just get in your car and drive there right away just for one thing. If you can line up shopping, etc. then it's a much lower fuel/time cost. The buyer did "bags" it first.

I've had good experience this way especially with great deals farish away because it's efficient; however, I have missed out when I need to pick up today, but it's been clearly communicated.

Rare situation was just then. I had a pick up lined up on Wed from Sunday (when I'd tag it on to shopping) - seller agreed; was confirming just then and saw sold notice - asked and they said sorry a buyer picked up yesterday. That's not the seller I like to deal with, but it's rare and didn't cost my anything apart from a bit of annoyance

In any case, my approach is not to count my chicks until it's in my hands. Yesterday I picked sth up from school run lined up last Thurs to pick up this Thurs, but changed days with my wife so picked up Monday. My wife couldn't believe the quality but I was pretty confident because it was from a relatively wealthy suburb and great communication - you can generally tell with sellers.

Also some situations where I was second but could pick up earlier and got it because my school run was the next day (called gazumping in real estate parlance).

      • This is exactly how indo things. I work all over melb and prefer to save time and money by lining up pick ups with jobs in an area. Many are cool with this, some are a little harder to convince and a few just arent down with it at all. Sucks to miss out on a deal sometimes. Also pays to keep in touch with a seller just in case people are no shows managed to grab some good deals by subtly hinting I can pickup asap when it turns out original buyer hasnt turned up or responded.

  • I recently gave away a double stainless sink for free just the other day, came out of our kitchen during a recent renovation. Had so many time wasters, the guy who eventually came to get it showed up two days after he said he would and was then upset that it didn't come with any sink plugs or a mixer tap. Nothing of the sort was in any photos or the description, he just expected more free stuff for going to the effort of collecting his free sink. People suck.

    • Just sold a ps4 to a lady, she was very respectful and nice, i dont want to gender judge I gotten some nice guys come and buy things no issue but after dealing with some saying they are to drunk and cant make it or there was one that told me to go die because my item was already cheap but he wanted more off it.
though there have been some nasty women too.
lets also not ignore the buy and sell groups, so many angry people that judge for no reason on there

The worst experiences I have had are giving stuff away for free. People are quick to claim but slow to pickup but I have had multiple occasions where they are sent me their their address some 40-50kms away and asked if we can deliver it to them… I mean, come on man. It is free! I ain't delivering it.

Best experience was selling a heap of old Xbox games cheap, guy had his sick daughter with him (terminally) and you could see they were not well off. Gave them to him along with a bunch of others I wasn't planning on selling. He was so genuinely thankful and teared up that I had to fight the urge to run back in and start filling his car up with more stuff.

    • I would literally LOL at them and then block them

sent me their their address some 40-50kms away and asked if we can deliver it to them… I mean, come on man. It is free! I ain't delivering

  • My favourite was when I agree a price with someone and then after all the to and fro and he replies "let me go ask my parents" LMFAO. I just had to laugh at that one, what else can you bloody do.

I don't bother selling stuff on FB Marketplace for this reason.

Oh, if you're been trying to sell Pokemon cards lately, I must apologise for all the stupid questions my son has been asking. How much for this, how much for that one, and then ghosting you once it's above his budget haha

Come to think of it, don't post up 50 decent Pokemon cards with a single price of $20. You deserve all the stupid questions. My son genuinely thinks he can buy all of them for $20 because that's what you listed them for. Broke his heart.. haha
