Perfect. I've been waiting for a cheapo 120gb SATA SSD to put inside an old laptop.

120 wont be big enough if you're using it for a system drive, go 240 to be safe.

      • +2

Currently using a 60 GB partition on the old 250 GB drive so should be fine for my very specific use case.

Your system is ridiculously bloated then. What OS are you using?

        • No my system isn't bloated but the program associated with what I use for content creation seem to take up more space than a typical generic build.
In saying this, I need program files on same drive as OS specifically for VST and plugins. While I may never ever use up 240 GB my drive is currently reporting 125 GB free of 237 GB, so I have currently 112 GB used with no games installed at all. My OS is clean too with minimal other bloatware.
I would never waste a sata port on a 120GB drive, it's pointless.

Hmm… I've seen 240GB going for about $38. I wouldn't say this is worth it for a 120GB. 120GB is too low for today's needs, I'd only buy one if it was under $20

i agree, 120gb is very little storage to work with, even if youre just doing the bare basics

Planning to install Linux and a few basic kids games on a 2008 era laptop. Currently using the original 2.5" in there but real opportunity to make it significantly faster for my toddler to bash around with. Also debating if worthwhile to go Chrome OS Flex in which case even 120gb might've been overkill.

        • if its for a toddler then its another story 😂

        • +1

Most people here aren't buying this for a toddler, they're buying it for themselves. The fact that you're bringing Chrome OS into this just shows it's a completely different purpose…

120GB seems fine for you, but the price doesn't sit right with me (see my $30 PNY comment below)

          • @Zackeroo: Fair. I mean I was at the point of even considering Fattydove (and this was before the LTT video) but decided I may as well wait to spend a few dollars more to at least get something which is from a brand I've heard of.

@jace88: Fair enough. As an 18 year old, good on you for watching LTT and getting your toddler into computers too!! :)

They'll appreciate it in the future.

Recently did the same on almost same age laptop. CloudReady (Flex predecessor) dual booted with EndeavourOS (Linux) and imo the Linux system is far superior performance-wise to the Google system.

If you've got the space do both (dual boot) but you'll find yourself spending majority of time in Linux!

Absolutely. 240GB is the bare minimum these days. I bought a PNY 240GB for $30 from OzBargain a couple months back. The SSD is so blazing fast, bit even beat a Crucial BX500 in a performance test hahahah.

Those the deals you should be looking into buying instead of the $25 120GB SSDs

      Even at $20, I can't "waste" a SATA port on 120gb.

    • +1

120 is great for app servers like truenas, they typically only need 32gb and can be run from USB sticks, but having a small SSD instead can be a benefit.

  • Anyone know if this external dvd drive is any good?

I've had two of them. One died after about 4 years and the other one's around 3 years old but still going well. I do very little writing with it, but I read from it most days so it gets a workout.

Think of this as a one-time use $20 coupon rather than a promotion code. There are plenty of better deals out there that you can use the code on instead.

  • is that the Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200 RPM?

Grabbed one of the security keys because..

Time to watch some YT videos to figure out what it does.. 😅

    • I still have no idea what it does, well sort of..

But I feel like I should have actually just gone the YubiKey 5. There's like not much decent reviewage of the security key..

  • I got a laptop with windows 10. The HDD is starting to make noises how would i swap the old HDD with its OS to the new HDD
