Woolworths Chicken Kyiv Garlic $1.40 (Was $2.80) @ Woolworths

7981

R Ukraiving some processed chicken meat? No? Good. This is NATO good for you and you should eat organic chicken thigh fillets or breast instead.

Having said that, this deal is great because:

  • Woolies is virtue signalling and you can too by buying it and sharing the novelty deli sticker to your echo chamber of a social media account
  • It's half price but still has a decent profit margin because of the junk meat that is in it; gotta keep WOW shares pumping in the upcoming inflationary crash
  • Eating this will keep you demotivated to do anything else but browse more internet with all the soy and seed oils they are putin in this

No doubt the garlic filling was a result of the research coming out of the US funded biolabs scattered around eastern Europe. Mmm oily.

These used to be $1 half price and been going up every couple of months & 55 %processed chicken no thanks .

    • +1

What's so terrible? So it is chicken sausage? They are not pretending otherwise.
I've tried their "real" Chicken Kyiv, and its not that much different.
Personally, I buy bone-in chicken thighs and add my own garlic etc. Still cheap.

      • No thanks meaning i wont be eating them ,whats so terrible about that i like to have a idea on what im eating and what my food is made from ,i also make my own with chicken breast or thigh .

      • +1

Did you actually just write ‘Chicken Kyiv’ lmao

  • +2

I would hold this until I find my vodka.

Well done, gave me a giggle

+1 for the effort putin the description. For now time for bed zzzzzzzzz

  • +1

    Yeah these are gross.

  • +1

Interesting that Woolies kept up with the times and changed the spelling to Kyiv.
    Coles is still using Kiev.

    • +3

Seriously the cancel culture for the Cotton Ball Club is ridiculous !

      • I thought you wanted to cancel Western media.

    • Is 'Kiev' purely a westernisation?

      • +4

They both are, we use Latin characters they don't. Thus there is no "correct" way to spell it in Latin letters / English. Kiev is equally valid. But Kyiv seems to be in vogue.

        • +1

          Thanks for the knowledge.

          • +2

@Skinnerr: The use of Kiev is considered to be the translation of the Russian spelling/pronunciation and Ukraine has requested the change so as to be closer to the Ukrainian spelling/pronunciation. The Ukrainian spelling has a Cyrillic character that looks like an "i" with two dots over it which makes the phonetic sound "yi" which the Russian version doesn't have, hence the attempt to remap to new latin characters.

I bet most of the +s are because of the description.

Are people really going to go along with renaming the chicken kiev? How obnoxious.

    • +13

Goes perfect with a side of Freedom Fries

      • Another obnoxious food to give your kid in the morning.

    • +2

Nothing like a war to change decades of tradition

    • Obnoxious: extremely unpleasant

Are you sure you're not meaning the product rather than the name?

  • +12

    Does this have band 28?

    • +4

No, but it will be banned by 2028

      • It's ok if it's too rubbery I can always cut it thinner with my band saw

  • Was there today, and another kiev variety was also half off at $1.40 each. It was some sort of "stuffed roasted chicken" kiev. I talked to the person who helped me, and she didn't know what it was. It sounded like chicken stuffed with roasted chicken. Huh?

  • +2

price went up from $1 to $1.4 over last year or so while quality degraded (smaller in size and the meat does not quite taste like chicken now. filling is suspiciously white, does not taste like garlic butter)

    • 40% increase for worse…

    • +5

filling is suspiciously white, does not taste like garlic butter

Slightly salty and unpalatable? My internet research leads me to believe that drinking pineapple juice first might help.

  • +1

This is not the breast quality meat.
Tanks for Putin some effort into the wordblurt +1

I like the garlic flavour. I can feel it explodes in my mouth and invades my taste buds.

Got these last time they were on special. They are so awful, even for a processed food. Hate to waste food, but we ended chucking them out. I can't comprehend how anyone could think these are nice, or even ok. Couldn't pay me enough to eat them.

Here my out. Aldi frozen kievs are the best. Proper breast fillet

  • Hi Vladimir. Is that you?

  • +4

Chicken Kievs were actually made by a French chef in Russia, so they don't have any relation to Ukraine other than being named after the capital. These are also dreadful. Get proper Kievs from a butcher.

+1 for calling out soy and seed oils!

  • +2

What happened to Kievs? Have they gone politically correct?

    • +3

Kiev is not wrong, but based on Russian pronunciation. So you can understand people shifting to the modern latinisation "Kyiv" that more closely follows Ukrainian pronunciation.

      • But it doesn't follow Ukrainian pronunciation. Kyev or Kyeev even is much closer to Київ.

        • +1

'The Ukrainian name is Ки́їв, written in the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet, and usually rendered in Latin letters (or romanized) as Kyiv' - https://tinyurl.com/w24wbu7b

      • We’re not talking about the capital of Ukraine. We’re talking about a chicken based meal.

    • +1

Well at least we didn't go stupid and devise the term 'liberty chicken' or 'freedom chicken' with this one, I think Kiev to Kyiv is at least practical, and like manic has said a modern translation of the local name…..

      • +1

Don't need to add any salt once you cook these, just dehydrate all the tears from the unresolved reports section of this deal. I love it when I get an "Other" report against me as you know that wet tissue wrote a novel in that little report textbook hahahaha

    • +3

      Grasspun for president.

  • These used to be $1 not that long ago on special. Bloody inflation

  • +1

So can anyone recommend a good alternative? I tend to buy the Inghams premium ones which are usually $11 for a 2 pack.

    • +3

ALDI frozen Kiev's are, "goated with the sauce", as the young ones say

  • +3
    1. Kyiv does not follow the correct pronunciation any more than Kiev. It is Київ or Kyev , if you want to be close.
    2. The dish itself isn't even Russian, or Ukrainian. It is French.

This is taking "Freedom Fries" to a whole new level of stupid.

  • Will this be reaching 1k in upvotes and be won as a new OzB Guinness World Record 🤔

  • +1

I think the current preferred way to pronounce it is 'keev'

  • So are these OK to freeze? I'm sure I've asked at the deli before and they say no because they have already been defrosted but many of the reviews say they freeze them.

      https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/can-you-refreeze-chicke…

      SUMMARY
When handled properly, it’s safe to refreeze raw and cooked chicken within their respective shelf lives. Only refreeze raw chicken that has been thawed in the refrigerator.

      • This isn't just raw chicken though. There are plenty of other ingredients in them.

    Nice post though…

Kudos to Woolworths for renaming Chicken Kiev
Wouldn't it be good if Coles, Woolworths ,IGA, Aldi, Steggles/Baiada, Inghams etc got together, and not only rename Chicken Kiev in support, but have a major percentage of profit go towards Ukrainian Charities, to help feed/house/treat those most in need in the Ukraine.
50c from Woolworths is a start.

  • I came to this thread to see how to cook these. The Woolies website says to cook it according to the packet instructions. All I got was a cooler of kyivs wrapped in paper with a sticker and barcode.. the sticker still days Kiev! Subscribe at Woolies hasn't updated the computer. Anyways.. Gonna do it in the oven for about 20 mins
