Anyone had the Coles Slow Cooked Beef Brisket and can comment on its quality? 800gm of meat for $10 is amazing, but worried about the BBQ sauce.

    • +16

It is half fat and sauce.. I usually prefer the woolies preprepped one as it seems to contain a lot less of the fat, but even the last one from woolies was crap quality. The BBQ sauce is ok but find for taco night you probably want to add extra.

The beef ragu is much much better ymmv.

I've tried each multiple times cause I'm a lazy bastard… Will not touch coles ones again beyond the beef ragu.

Thanks for saving me money and time.

From a sample of one, I'd say don't bother.
Not really brisket style meat and too much fatty, wet, not very bbq sauce. Disappointing.

Happy to hear if I just got a dud and others loved it. Then I'll try again.

      • +1

Cheers. Will give it a miss then.

I can't comment on the quality of the product, but based on the ingredients I note that you'll get between 520 and 650 grams of meat (for the "sticky cola sauce" version and the "American style BBQ sauce" version respectively).

Me and Mrs B had it a few weeks ago.
I agree with the comments a little; there was a bit of fat on it, but brisket is like that, and the sauce counts in the 800g, so you are not getting that amount of meat for $10.
But, it was pretty delicious. We got 4 meals out of it, so at $2.50 a serve, we will be getting more this week. And some buns and coleslaw…

      • I've had it around 8 times, so obviously I'm a fan. I'm not big on bbq sauce generally, so I tend to only use half of it. I like lean meat, so I remove the fatty edges as I pull the brisket apart. Works great in burgers; I get 4-5 out of it.

Unfortunately, it's not on sale in WA. It's likely we have no stock anyway.

every saying plenty of fat, but the macros don't seem too bad on the product
Per 100g, 15.2g of protein, 10.5g of carbs and 5.5g of fat

I think it tastes pretty decent, but it might be more expensive than advertised. I clicked on the item while looking at their catalogue online, and there is a note apologising for listing the price incorrectly. Apparently it will actually cost $15.

    Thanks mr gaMgee

As has been mentioned above, Woolworths brisket is much much better. The Coles one is crap, meat isn't as tender and flavours are just average. I'll never buy it again.

Woolworths you usually get a decent cut of meat and the flavours are more representative of what a decently cooked brisket tastes like (though you're really doing yourself an injustice if you've never had a freshly smoked (high quality) brisket.

Says on the online catalogue that $10 was a mistake and that it will actually be $15

    • +1

Agree, there is now an apology on the catalogue page. Please update the price.

    • +2

Bizarre that they vaguely apologize for the alleged error, but don't actually fix the price.
Still $10 in online catalogue and $10 in large print in the popup with the apology.

$20 or even $15 is a joke for this product,

      • I'm fairly sure the normal price was $16/17 about a year ago and you could get it on sale for $12-15.

Thanks OP, out of medium grain rice so been on the lookout.

Gamgee always negotiates the deals at the perfect time

  • Wasn’t Dynamo $10 last time on special?

    • $10 at Woolies at the moment.

I think most laundry detergents increased in price by 10-20% in the past year or so. That’s not factoring they reduced in size by 10% a couple of years ago.

I started using Aldi’s laundry liquid. Scored very well in the Choice test. $8 for 2L and recommended to use less ml per wash than Dynamo.

      • I've started using the Aldi laundry detergent based on choice tests …. don't know if it's better, but I know its' not worse , clothes come out clean ….. bigger variable is 30c wash vs 40c wash in how clean clothes come out.

Overall came 4th, with very little splitting them except the price.

The Aldi was cheapest by a mile.

Do you notice a difference between 30 & 40C wash?

I don't really notice between a cold wash and a 60C wash. I occasionally use the 60C wash for really soiled stuff or whites. I also use the 60C wash to clean the machine and avoid detergent build up.

  • I wish Tip Top would bring back the cheese and bacon muffins. English just doesn't cut it.

    • does if you put cheese and bacon on it …..and maybe an egg …… a plain muffin has a longer shelf / fridge life than if they have animal products in it e.g bacon or cheese …. would you eat bacon 5 days out of a fridge vs eat plain muffin 5 days out of a fridge ….. ?

  • Damn that beef apology

  • Dealing with Coles when it comes to half price specials is incredibly frustrating.

Half the stuff on Sam's list doesn't appear in the results if you search for 'coles-weekly-specials' or hit the half-price specials link on coles online. And, there's loads of stuff that is genuinely half price, but neither appears in Sam's list, nor appears in the half-price-special search results. Woolies on the other hand, you just slap the half price special link and it's all there, no hassle.
