            • @FantasticMrFox: They can't be haha, I once made another account and almost got banned from OzBargain because of that. Apparently you're not allowed to have two accounts…

@pete1812: I guarantee you most people's first thought seeing this deal is "great price, I wonder how much a battery will cost to make this usable."

Literally the opposite of pointless post. You need to be very open to criticism when posting a deal, but this doesn't even count as being criticised.

We shall defend our posts to the death!

        • Obviously this is just a friendly reminder that if you don't already own their battery, it's not cheap.

Thanks mate. I almost apply my OZBargain rule: buy first and research later.

Do you mean refund once it arrives

        • Just not gonna go pickup until they cancel order :)

  • +3

I guess it would be OK-ish if other batteries will work on this. Possibly with an adapter?

    • +2

If you have a 3d printer, a soldering iron and some sheet metal for the contact surfaces, you could probably make one.

  • +12

    Thanks OP!

Ordered one. Will be my 5th chainsaw that I don't actually need.

    Too good to pass up.

Will design, print and open source an ozito adaptor

    • Very nice - so will need to be 2 x 18V. Will that fit do you think?

      • +2

Yeah it'll have to be 2x18v batteries.
Will have to get creative on the battery mount.

    • +1

looking forward to the adapter design mate!

    • +8

Warnning!!! There is a one way 33V TVS in Ozito battery. If you put 2 batteries in serial, there is a risk to blow the TVS. I have tried to add a 7.2V to ozito 18V battery to make 24V running my mower and blowed the TVS 3 times. I even repalced the TVS with a double-way TVS, still got TVS blowed again. Then give up and use 2*12V LA battery.

      • +1

There are many Ozito products that run two batteries in series at 36v - their own chainsaw, the jet blower and the lawnmowers, so it must be do-able.

        • +3

Yeah I have the mower and vac blower that both use two batteries.
I will open them up to see how it manages it

    • +1

I'm thinking of doing one for aldi batteries. They are 20V.. thinking of wiring them up in series. What do you use for the leads?

      • Just auto electrical wire is my plan

        • Cool. I have ordered one I'm thinking of reusing the metal bits from cloths peg as receiving leads for the part where the battery connects. I don't know how the leads look like in this particular brand.

          • @peekabooo: Erm … wow. There's a surprising number of OzBers jerrying up hacked systems to 'make' the wrong brands of batteries work on stuff!

What could possibly go wrong?!? lololol

            • +1

@GnarlyKnuckles: Battery tech isn't particularly difficult stuff to work with. 90% of it is off the shelf stuff as it's been done by many people before. The other 10% is the physical layout (housings, connections etc.)

    • Will be my 5th chainsaw that I don't actually need.

At the very least, a fairly cheap chainsaw for horror night costumes?

    (Much better without batteries)

Yeah - looks like a toy.

      Much better without batteries

      How so?

      • +1

        dd22 …

He meant that if you were going to take an actual chainsaw to a knees-up as part of your costume, it would probably be wiser to ensure that it was not actually in a functional/working state while it was at that party.

        • it would probably be wiser to ensure that it was not actually in a functional/working state while it was at that party

          Aw, you're no fun. ☹️

    • I'm assuming you're joking but that's a terrible idea, even without a battery a new chain is very sharp can do some serious damage

  • +9

This is like taking the printer cartridge price-gouging concept to its ultimate form.
The chainsaw is so cheap you virtually cant say no, but the proprietary batteries, ohhh they are going cost you dearly

    • +7

They sell the whole kit for $369 though, so i guess its still a good deal to pay for both items separately if you were actually in the market for it.

  • I am just moving houses and need a new lawnmower for the first time in years. Was considering a cordless one. Hadn't seen this brand before and now I am interested in getting the lawnmower kit and this chainsaw as a cheapie to go with it. Has anyone got any experience with this range of products that could give some positive or negative feed back?

    • I have the lawn mower and blower/vacuum and would not buy them again. The mower cuts reasonably well but the battery often wriggles loose and needs to be pushed back in, the grip has disintegrated and one of the clips that holds the handle in place has fallen off. The blower/vac also works reasonably well but gets blocked with leaves and struggles with sand. I may have had unrealistic expectations for the price but I think the quality is not great

      • Any chance you could take a photo of the battery terminals?
Keen to know what each pin is for.

        EDIT

They are labelled as T1 and T2 on the charger but not in the battery as far as I can tell. I found some photos online

      • Actually, any chance you could do me a massive favour and measure the voltage across the two middle pins of your battery and also measure the resistance between those two pins?

        • +1

I tried to help with this but couldn’t get the multimeter probes to reach the pins. The pins are set a little way into the plastic casing and the probes are too wide to fit in

          • @bobkin: No worries.

I think this battery generates a Digital signal not use a thermistor setup anyway

  • I picked up the last one at my local.

    Initial thoughts:
Great build quality. I own the ozito 18v chainsaw and this $25 one feels much better quality. Plus I like the no tool chain change and tightening.

The battery compartment is Giant, but not large enough to fit two ozito batteries in there. Will likely mount the batteries next to the bottom of the handle, one on either side similar to the ozito 2x18v chainsaw

    • How are you planning on adapting them?

      • +1

Design something in tinkercad then print it.
Will share once I have something working

        • I would be interested to hear how you did it too thanks.

    • 1 available. They probably bought it then saw the price of the battery and charger.

      • +2

They have a PS5 listed for $1,100 and an Xbox X for $1,199 - think that scalping is their game tbh.

  • $179 for the battery, $49 for the charger or $189 for both.

Buying for the bar and chain and hoping it fits one of my other saws lol

    • Great minds

  • I'll offer you $5 for my car and $6500 for my engine or buy the complete car for $6000

  • This is a damn good bargain for me, thanks OP!! I actually bought 2, thinking I should buy more…

Due to happy coincindence, I actually have two battery and chargers sets to match this - and currently one blower skin to run them in.

And yes, I already have 2 petrol chainsaws, one small one large, and still I bought this…..

  • After looking further at the website, looks like the hedge trimmer and blower vac were also discounted heavily, but now out of stock.

  • Noob here, any batteries recommended?

The whole forum is about it being only skin lol

    Re this:

Does anyone know when this 40 V 'Yard Force' tool line first became available (i.e. what year)? The price of this chainsaw, and the above information suggests to me that they are about to discontinue the entire line/stop selling it. Which means there would be no chance of picking up a reasonably priced 'kit' (tool+charger+battery) in the future.

    • This is why i didnt buy them when i noticed the price drop a few days ago

    • Yeah, darn it. Wish I'd seen the price - I was actually looking at it a week or so ago and everything was full price.

    • suggests to me that they are about to discontinue the entire line/stop selling it. Which means there would be no chance of picking up a reasonably priced 'kit' (tool+charger+battery) in the future.

Or it could suggest that they'll try to clear out chargers/batteries at dumpster prices as well.

      • If they are about to discontinue their entire 40 V line (perhaps for example, because they're about to launch a new 56 V line to compete with the 'EGO' range), then the very last type of stock they will discount (read 'clear') is the chargers/batteries … because no one is going to buy a skin for something that chargers/batteries can no longer be purchased for.

This same thing happened many (about 15?) years ago with one of the first battery tool ranges to hit the mass market, and that's how it went down. I think it was the 'original generation' of the battery Ryobi tools, but I can't quite recall. It might have been the first-generation of the Ozito range?

        • Might not mean anything, but there weren't any 40V yardforce tools in their latest catalogue that was dropped in our mailbox this week. Lots of petrol stuff, some makita, and some 18V yardfoce

Edit: I bought the skin anyway, for the bar and chain if nothing else, might rig up a 2x18v system for it, or put the bar on a petrol chainsaw with a knackered bar

  • Is there a adapter available for makita batteries?

  • Would this cut through human bone?

    • Probably.

I use my mini chainsaw to cut off the rib eye bone so I can fit the steak in my air fryer

  • I just bought one in Qld. I have the Ozito battery range, looking forward to seeing a battery hack but I assume that this will be difficult with the Ozito being a larger casing than yard force.
I’m happy to pay for an adaptor if this gets designed. Thanks

  • battery you can retrofit here $50 and charger $20 not really convenient until anyone can get a deal on the original battery and charger which i did see as low as 99$ last year at mitre 10.

The issue is vibrations on any battery hack so realistically pay the 189 and get a reasonable chainsaw for ~$220 vs the $269 ryobi kit which is only 18v

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313790782443?hash=item490f635beb…

    • as someone who never retrofitted batteries before, is it hard to do?

      • +1

yes It requires you to solder new connection points between the chainsaw and the battery the issue is chainsaws kick a lot so pay the extra $100 and get the real deal, its brushless so at ~220 its better value than the ryobi $269 non brushless kit at 18v normally you would pay $349 for this saw and battery kit so its essentially 33% off.

  • Well that was an unexpected purchase for today. I plan to try making two 5S battery packs with 18650s and run them in series. That way I can easily charge them on a SkyRC charger and/or run them in an RC car.

So for $60 I can get a hedge trimmer, blower and chainsaw that I can't use until they have their batteries on special. Might still bite the bullet.

    • Interesting that they have their own domain. Any idea how to find other Mitre 10 stores set up like this?

  • I wonder if these batteries are sold under another brand elsewhere? Strangely, they appear different from the UK 40v Yard Force batteries
    Type 1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yard-Force-Cordless-Lawnmower-19150…
    Type 2 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yard-Force-G25-EU-Lithium-Ion-Prote…
    UK 40V chainsaw uses type 2 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yard-Force-Cordless-Chainsaw-Lithiu…
And they are both different from the type sold by Mitre 10

    • They 100% would be but its hard to tell. As a matter of fact they look similar to my ryobi 40V charger but they wont be the same.

      • Yes they do look a bit like Ryobi 40v

    • +1

Yeah there seems to be different generations of batteries, quite a lot of variations for a single brand.

Perhaps that's why they're running out these tools?

I'd only buy into this deal if using your existing batteries or an adaptor for other batteries.

Wouldn't recommend buying into a brand like this to get started.
Plenty of mainstream brands to go with instead

  • +2

Ok brains trust need a hand.

I disassembled the chainsaw to check connections and test power before designing a battery adaptor and mount.
I tested using two ozito 1.5ah batteries wired in series (see photo). The motor starts up and runs for a few seconds, maxing out at about 2A current draw then switches off. It will not restart till I disconnect and reconnect the battery.

So then I tried with a 3ah and 4ah battery in series but still the same issue.

Then I thought maybe the batteries were protecting themselves so I tried using 2 other brand 18v battery (toolpro) but the same thing happened.

I suspect the chainsaw needs the two other pins to be connected but I'm not sure what they are?
There is no continuity across any of the 4 pins. There is voltage across positive/negative (obviously). Also get voltage across positive and either of the 2 middle pins.

My ozito 36v blower and mower are simply 2x18v wired in series. There's no other pins.

I suspect I may need to bridge the chainsaw middle pins to either positive or negative terminals? Obviously don't want to blow my batteries by doing the wrong thing.

    Any ideas?

    • +1

So something onboard the chainsaw is closing off power? So there must be some kind of control board or relay, solid state or otherwise, inside the chainsaw?
Maybe it's like an apple device looking for a specific key, such as a nominated resistance across the pins to allow power? Or perhaps a nominated voltage from the original battery through those other pins holding the relay open?
Am 100% just guessing out loud and hoping others chime in. It would be good to have an original battery to test against

      • Yes it seems that way. Usually the third pin of the battery is some sort of thermistor used to monitor charging temperature, and it's possible that the chainsaw uses this to monitor overheating. I'm just not sure what is expected (my best guess is shorting the positive terminal to this pin but I'm afraid to try that at the risk of blowing up the battery).

I don't know why there is a forth pin though.

Both those extra pins are connected to something as I can see small data wires coming off them

        EDIT

Found a photo that shows the pins labelled as T1 and T2.

        • just get a fuse in between, you wont blow the battery.

          • @lgacb08: Oh yeah great idea! Will try that

I tried using shorts with various sized resistors without luck.
Tried 10k, 20k, 30k 100k ohm but it would not start.

I noticed the ozito pack thermistor is at 73kohm at warm room temperature, but 160k ohm at hot room temperature.
No idea what the yard force expects.
