It’s on sale but I have definitely seen these products cheaper on Amazon before

Just note you can get similar avocado tools on aliexpress or kmart (sometimes) for a few dollars.

Yep that's always an option for pretty much anything.

The Joseph Joseph Citrus Reamer certainly looks…. different.

      • +1

Citrus reamer? Isn't that your idea of a good Friday night? :P

I have one of these garlic crushers and it's ok. Not sure it's worth the money, as, unlike a straight press, garlic gets caught in the cam.

If you see the JJ potato ricer on sale, do not buy it. Mine broke within 3 uses, because it's just too much pressure on the small nubs in the cam, and they shear off.

    • +2

I concur with the garlic press review. The handle flexes a bit too much, so you don't press the garlic all the way and end up with lot unpressed garlic.

    • Agreed.

    • Potato Rice is excellent.

  • +3

The garlic press has a big gap between the pressers so there is always a piece of garlic stuck in the middle. It's fine if you're crushing a lot of garlic as the next piece you put in will push it down, but when crushing just one you end up with a big wasted bit.

    • +1

Yep, spot on. If you only press one garlic clove then be prepared to get less than half out of it. So I always press at least two.

  • +5

The JJ brand is full of gimmicky tools that require extra cleaning.

    • And you pay for it

Buy a nice microplane instead of this garlic press.

  • Buy minced garlic in jars from Colesworths

      I grow my own garlic.

      My good gosh…

That's about the last thing you do before you just go right ahead and leave it out of the recipe…

“Garlic is divine. Few food items can taste so many distinct ways, handled correctly. Misuse of garlic is a crime. Old garlic, burnt garlic, garlic cut too long ago and garlic that has been tragically smashed through one of those abominations, the garlic press, are all disgusting. Please treat your garlic with respect. Sliver it for pasta, like you saw in Goodfellas; don't burn it. Smash it, with the flat of your knife blade if you like, but don't put it through a press. I don't know what that junk is that squeezes out the end of those things, but it ain't garlic. And try roasting garlic. It gets mellower and sweeter if you roast it whole, still on the clove, to be squeezed out later when it's soft and brown. Nothing will permeate your food more irrevocably and irreparably than burnt or rancid garlic. Avoid at all costs that vile spew you see rotting in oil in screw-top jars. Too lazy to peel fresh? You don't deserve to eat garlic.”

      ― Anthony Bourdain

      • God I miss that man.

  • make sure you guys keep that garlic press away from the missus

  • There's always someone trying to turn pressing garlic into rocket science, isn't there?

  • I have this at it looks nice but honestly isnt that great because it requires a lot of force on the plastic.

I instead got one of the most popular metal amazon ones and it works way better. Although it is a little harder to clean.

  • I don't rate Joseph Joseph at all. Form over function, style over substance.
We had one of their plastic folding chopping boards gifted to us.
It's a floored design from the start, why do we need a chopping board to fold, just use the knife you chopped your food with to scrape the food into the pan or whatever. The fold lines in the plastic board are stressed impressions on the surface and weak points in the board's structure.
If you drop it and it lands on the end of the board, the shear force along the fold line snaps the board in two, or possibly three if you get the right angle.
They were good enough to replace it, with a bigger more cumbersome size of the same floored design.
Also who needs two of the same name?

  • I’ve got this one and it’s decent, but Joseph Joseph also make one called the “clean press” garlic crusher which is absolutely amazing. I haven’t seen them stocked anywhere in Australia for ages but if you see one, get it.

I've been using this garlic press from IKEA for a number of years. Stainless steel, gets used frequently and hasn't missed a beat. It's also half the price. Would definitely recommend.
