Do you still need a Facebook account?

    • +1

Yes but there are ways to get around that if you want to sacrifice multilayer and oculus store.

      • +1

There’s one way around it that doesn’t sacrifice multiplayer except in a few 1st-party Facebook apps, but you can’t use social features like friends lists.

There’s a second way with the same result where you can unlink (and delete if you want) your Facebook account and use an old-style Oculus account, but it requires a Facebook account for setup. Seems like you need to either say you’re planning to link to a different Facebook account, or say you can’t log into Facebook (but they may require proof that you can’t log in).

They announced that they’ll drop the Facebook account requirement sometime next year but nobody knows what they’ll replace it with and whether it’ll be much of an improvement.

  • Hook me up to the metaverse

  • VR porno here we come

    • +1

As a porn connoisseur, definitely. Some of it is crap though as the fov is too close. But some of it is amazing.

      • Silly question but how does it work? With any site and video and you wear the headset? Or is it specific video formats or particular sites for vr?

        • Its proper videos that have been recorded with special cameras. Pornhub has a section of vr porn but its not great. I forget the name of the other site, but there is a paid website that is dedicated to it and their quality is a Lot better. They have some demo videos you can try instead of buying.

      • +4

Haha reminds me of an episode of Red Dwarf with lister hooked up to a VR machine with groinal attachment ….. hilarious stuff

      • The main problem is to do with parallax . They want to stick stuff up close to your face, but what you get is double vision a headache and maybe even a complete loss of the 3d. That is a fault of the producer. Just like focusing, the distance between cameras need to be adjusted when an object comes closer. The equipment to do this must be a lot more expensive or they don't know what they're doing

  • 128 vs 256GB. Is this just storage space or also a performance attribute?

    • +3

Just storage difference. Most games are fairly small at only a few gb, except for Medal of honour which is over 40gb

      • Thank you

    • +1

128GB is plenty enough! I have the 64GB version before they even had a 128 and I haven't filled it up depsite having 20+ games on it

      • Cheers

      • It’s plenty enough until you install Medal of Honor which takes up a massive 41gb. I’m now having to delete apps before I can install new ones as have maxed it out on my 128gb.

  • Is this eligible for any cash rewards or shopback? Or is it a 0% item?

    • +2

Unsure, but you can get an oculus $47 store credit for apps if you use the referral system.

    • I've been checking Amazon for a couple of weeks and bought one yesterday when they came back into stock. I used Shopback and have a pending cashback of $17.42 (Approximately 4%)

Quite useful because I used a new account in eBay which gave me a $10 credit if I used Afterpay, so I used that to buy a 5 meter USB tether cable to use the Occulus with my PC which was at $1.25 off less $10 a $13.74 end cost. (Original price $24.99 - Aussie stock)

One of the main reasons for getting the Quest 2 is to do some Google Street View tourist stuff. I know it's wallpaper style but I think it will be fun to check out places via a headset rather than clicking on the white arrow in street view on my computer (Which seems to hate street view graphics)

      • +5

There’s a quest app called wander which is around $15 that will help with this. I also have another free app called GoThru that is on app lab which is similar, https://sidequestvr.com/app/4350/gothru

        • Ayyyye nice thanks for the heads up!

      • I used to ‘virtual travel’ via Google Earth on the Rift fairly frequently, but I haven’t seen the app on the Quest store. I will likely do this again via Air Link, as it is strangely enjoyable

    • Yep I got the cashback email shortly after.

  • +6

    I mean… You even admit it isn't a deal….

    • +6

Graphics cards have been listed as deals for the last few years even when they are above RRP. It’s all relative to supply and demand.

I've also got the feeling that purchasing through Amazon will mean we dont get hit with a foreign conversion fee. I ordered mine directly through Oculus and got charged a fee even though payment was supposedly in Aussie dollars.

      • It depends on your card.
Banks will charge you if the merchant is overseas even if it uses AUD.
PayPal won’t care and only charges for actual conversions

  • +4

Regarding the referral system, I've noticed that we no longer need to friend the referral/referer on facebook and can simply create a unique URL link if we are a referrer. In light of this, perhaps the mods here could change this in the OZB referral system so that we can enter this unique URL into the database and make it a hell of a lot easier for everyone involved. This would also overcome the issue of people asking multiple OZB members for codes.

    • ^This would be ideal +1

    • Posted an update on your other post but the TL;dr is unfortunately still requires FB friends for non us residents.

      • +2

I was able to use a referral despite not being a FB friend. That said, I haven’t received the credit yet

        • Awesome that's great to hear. Makes things heaps easier.

  • +4

Requires a Facebook account, so not useful for those who despise facebook

  • Did anyone get motion sickness from using the Quest 2? I have the Rift and also the PS VR, and I'd feel nauseous from using the two, particularly when playing Skyrim.

    • +2

In my first week of playing I experienced some very odd after effects, more like a feeling of disassociation with my body after using. My limbs/hands not quite feeling like they belonged to me or a feeling that they were offset from their actual position even hours after I removed the headset. I remember going for a drive afterwards and really having to concentrate, a feeling like having a few beers.

It also made me question reality in some ways, a feeling that reality is just a very good simulation.

I get these effects far less now though, like getting your sea legs.

      • Thanks for sharing your experience! I might give this one a shot, third time lucky perhaps.

    • Games do have a comfort rating also some have options to reduce/eliminate motion sickness as well (for instance teleport as opposed to smooth artificial or on-rails locomotion).

      • +1

Thanks! Didn’t know about the comfort rating and the options to reduce motion sickness. I’ll check that out too 😊

        • Should have mentioned Oculus have a 14 day refund policy as well so if you get motion sickness or end up regretting your purchase you can get your money back.

    • +1

      Yes on certain games.

Zero calibur reloaded - instantly happens.. requires setting the quest 2 to 90hz mode manually as the game doesn't natively support it, but eliminates it.

Sometimes happens when playing other games.

  • +1

    This is normal price, mate.

  • I'm interested to get one for VR cycling with VZ Fit - anyone used one? What sensor do you use?

  • Hahahah

  • Commence Facebook hate circlejerk

  • Can you use this headset off line so all you do is download the games and then disconnect?

Would that be a way to stop you being tracked / data mined?

    • +1

In this modern era you are being tracked far more by things other than facebook , facebook is a collection of what you put there like friends photo etc so dont add friends or just add some facebook oculus community . Tracked by things you dont think of your internet usage metadata collected from you isp , tracking your mobile phone metadata , rewards cards , credit cards all track something we just accept those .

There was a great article a few years ago where a reporter got his mobile phone metadata where it showed his movements from his home to his work to the restaurants to where he shops sooo facebook is just the face of big brother tracking you … do you use flybuys , do you use any rewards cards ? and now coronavirus logins etc etc …….

      Edit here's the article from 2015 https://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-08-24/metadata-what-you-fou…

    • +1

In answer to your question, yes you can play games offline. Likely the data may still be logged until next time you logon though.

  • +4

I bought one of these about a month ago and have had many friends round who have tried it, all of whom were blown away.
This is a really cool piece of equipment, despite it being owned by meta.

    • +1

Is this a thinly veiled 'I have friends' kinds post… 🤔

      • +1

        Everyone likes toffees.

  • How does the referral work? I purchase this but dont register / create account once it arrives till i have a referral code?

    • +1

Yep exactly, well you just visit a referrers link before signing up.

    • +1

Get a referral from someone here on Ozb.

Note outside of usa this still has to be done via Facebook and being friends unless the oculus subreddit is wrong and the terms and conditions page of oculus is also wrong (happy to be proven wrong)

      2) activate IE do the click through for the referral link first before doing anything with the headset. If you don't you will need to factory reset the headset and do step 2 again

      3) if you ever have to return a headset and have a significant other, send them a referral, accept it, activate their account on your new headset, send yourself a gift game using the credit, factory reset and then activate your account.

      You'll get 47 dollars x2 effectively.

      • I think just the unique referral link might actually be working outside the US as well. Rather than the FB add as before I just sent the referral link instead recently and a few days later it has shown up in the Oculus app as referral accepted (no credit yet tho).

        • +1

That's awesome to hear. Makes it heaps easier that's for sure.

      • I have one arriving from Amazon tomorrow, but haven’t set anything up and would love a referral code if anyone can help out? Thanks!

  • How often are there discounted / sale prices on these items? I noticed in the history they were discounted back during christmas last year. Was that a rare occurrence?

    • +1

Only seen it on sale/promo a couple of times on Amazon myself. They seem to go out of stock within days and takes awhile to come back in stock.

  • If anyone could shed light on this: I followed a referral link and registered an account about a month ago in anticipation of buying a headset. When this arrives, do I just sign into the account I created and me and the referee will get the credit? Hopefully it hasn't been too long (in the process I also registered as a developer to be able to install sidequest. Hopefully that won't mess things up for me)

    • You should be fine as long as you use the same account when setting up/activating the Quest.

      • Thank you!

        • No worries champ! 🍻

  • Asking the real questions here..

Does this have a $450 benefit over a $30 slip-your-phone-in VR headsets for dedicated VRpr0n?

    Not asking for a friend.

    • +2

      high refresh rate
      higher resolution
      much wider field of view
      actually has tracking and controllers

      • Ooooooo! 😍

Controllers seems a bit useless though.

Guess they sort of already look like butt plugs..

And I got a spare! Or I could play with a friend at the same time..? 🥰

  • For those who own a quest 2, which head strap do you use and would recommend? I hear the stock strap hurts after a few hours and isn't very secure. Are there also any other accessories you would suggest?

    • Check out this thread champ some good recommendations there.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/668937

      • I purchased this head strap pad and it has been great thus far. I have a couple of power banks attached to the back which balances out the headset weight (just one works fine as well).

Also pick up a few of these or similar type of headband to not only keep the sweat out but it also helps with comfort and keeping the headset in place when you're moving around. It was recommended by someone here and works really well.

        • Interesting thought on the headbands, will consider. Thanks for the suggestions.

I also hadn't seen this strap before. Most reviews seem to point to the bobovr M2 (or M2 pro). I was considering the M2 and getting a phone magnetic sticky mount to use to attach a power bank to the back as a counterweight. Not sure if the halo design would work better than the elite type…

  • I have already registered the referral after i placed the order. Now the item has arrived, I presume as long as i set up the item with the same account then all will go through fine for the referral credits?

    • As long as you have registered the referral with your oculus account BEFORE you activate the headset on the account it's fine. Others have mentioned that if you don't accept the referral prior to activation, you can still factory reset it.

  • Thinking of getting one soon. Would any kind soul be willing to dm me a referral link?

  • The cable is pretty pricey, does it affect latency and improve image quality?

  • Buy while you can at this price

  • Merged from Meta (Oculus) Quest 2 128GB $479 Delivered @ Amazon AU
    Go to Deal

Before going into the OzRPP comments, Meta has announced that the Quest 2 Headset will be increasing by $100 USD starting 1st August, so if you have been umming and arring about picking up the Quest 2, now could be your last chance before it goes up to ~$639 AUD.

The 256GB will also be increasing in price as well, but I haven't come close to filling the 128GB, so I would recommend picking up the 128GB model if you are at all interested.

Starting in August, Meta Quest 2 will cost $399.99 USD and $499.99 USD for the 128GB and 256GB versions respectively.

Damn. Great deal for people who got theirs with the $100 amazon gift card previous black friday.

      • yeah, that was a no brainer deal really + $40 or so sign on bonus …a steal

        • $47.

          Plus there was cashrewards!

      • Was a credit that only worked on 'sold by Amazon AU', but yes.

    • +5

Don't forget to sign up for the $47 Promo credit referral.

        • I bought one today off Gumtree, can I still use the referral system you linked?

          • +1

@Ham Dragon: Nothing to lose by trying. Its just clicking a link really, and then when you log into the quest with the same account if you meet the criteria it credits you $47AUD game credit.

As I understand it - you must be new to oculus (can't have owned a quest 1 for example) and the headset must not have been used for a referral before (you can't do it, factory reset the device and get a family member to do it on the same device) - this may be the sticking point if the person before you did it.

            • +1

@toniyellow: Thanks for explaining that. I bought an unopened, factory sealed one with original receipt provided (from June 20th), so I think I should qualify.

    • +9

So we'll have to pay more for the privilege of Zuckerberg to harvest our data?

Annoying, I was waiting for an updated version before taking the VR plunge.

      • +2

On the plus side, you can now use them without a Facebook account.

I'm glad they announced the price rise in advance. I asked my employer to buy 6 last week, and they hadn't gotten around to it yet. They're putting it through today though.

        • +5

          without a Facebook account

Isn't a meta account now? same shit, different smell.

Nice that your company is getting into gear.

          • +8

@Caped Baldy: You previously needed an Oculus account, which is the same shit different smell too. But people only started complaining when they started forcing FB accounts.

The fact is there's currently no comparable device which gives anyone without a PC as good a VR experience as this anywhere near this price-point.

            • -2

@snoopydoop: Oh, Oculus was also fined $5 billion for privacy violations?…

When you bought this product from Oculus YOU were the customer, you buy these from meta you are the PRODUCT. You said it yourself:

"The fact is there's currently no comparable device which gives anyone without a PC as good a VR experience as this anywhere near this price-point."

          • @Caped Baldy: I mean the other one was linked to your Facebook data so pretty diff

        • Can you tell me more about using them without a Facebook account?

I've already gotten one and merged my oculus and facebook accounts, is there a way around this?

          • @Ezuku: I'm in the same boat. I haven't looked at how to reverse that. I'm just glad my new work ones can use a Meta account only.

          • @Ezuku: I picked one up on Prime day. They let you use Oculus accounts but I don't believe they let you create them anymore. Plus there is a notice saying that the Oculus accounts will no longer be usable after a certain date. I was trying to create an oculus account because I didn't want to use FB but gave up in the end.

            • looking at the meta site it seems they will begin being available next month?
In August 2022, we’ll begin rolling out a new Meta account structure that gives people more flexibility and control in VR. You’ll no longer be required to log into your Meta VR devices with a Facebook account.
        • +1

Curious what you do for work that requires VR?
