    I mean… I am a Suncorp member, so oh well haha… thanks.

    • +5

      I don't get it.

  • +6

Good! - fuel prices insane at the moment, - even with da CHOPPER working overtime…
United is usually one of the cheaper priced brands around me area.

Thumbs up .. any savings is a good saving

  • Thanks OP
Eliminates having to keep / rotate the IGA vouchers.

    • What? IGA vouchers? What am I missing out on?

  • +2

Nooo… Now I can't be as cocky about my footy club one.

Oh well, at least it means I can fill up both cars on the same day without issue.

    Cheers OP.

    • +1

I gave my mum my footy one and she has on the regular filled her car up and lent the card to my sister and got hers filled up same day without a issue. Even occasionally a 3rd car same day

  • +1

it's prob just a bit of bad luck - but whenever I hear about issues with contaminated fuel, it always seems to be United.

    • You have no idea. The insurance department at UP is working VERY hard, trying to disprove it was their fuel pumps that had water in it.

  • -3

I thought that's how fuel gets contaminated, by uniting particles?

  • +2

4c off per L when fuel is regular unleaded is headed towards $2 is like 2% off is hardly a bargain IMO.

You save more if you fly a chopper.

Or use Wish Gift Cards which give 3-4% off.

    • +2

but now you can't use wish card at Ampol any more

      • Where can u use wish cards?

    • +8

This post is all about discounts of 1% and 2% (in the comments).

IMO 4c off per L is better than 0c off per L, particularly when the fuel price is high.

      • +2

That's assuming the fuel is the same price as the competitors before the discount is applied. Otherwise you are going to the trouble of using a discount but not saving anything.

        • +2

for me this is perfect since the united right around the corner is consistently the cheapest in my area

    • +3

This attitude is what sees so many people far poorer than they should be and why the 1% own 99% of the wealth. 4c x 70L = 2.80 x 52 = $145 per year so in 7 years is a $1000 saving. Since United are also typically the cheapest for fuel then you can probably double that saving. I see fools all the time filling up at servos that are 5c+ more expensive than others around them, because hey it's only 5c right? Wrong. The reason it irrits me is those gumbies drive the price up for everyone.

      • Or worse, they think they're getting a great deal getting a 4c docket discount at Colworths and their associated petrol stations, when the servo just down the road (quite often a United indeed) is consistently selling at more than 4c cheaper than the undiscounted price.

      • +1

I’d imagine most people don’t fill 70L on average of fuel per week unless if it’s part of your job, you live in a regional area, or your car is fuel inefficient.

You can save further by changing your driving style. Lift and coast, slow acceleration, minimising AC at low speeds and winding up the windows above ~80km/h to reduce drag, removing extra weight from the car including your own weight and not filling your car to full, increase your tire pressures slightly, etc etc.

I’m sure the above will save you more than 2% in fuel costs. Which add up to thousands in several years. So if you genuinely are interested in reducing running costs then there are other considerations. People get fooled into thinking 4c off a L has a massive impact when in reality money can also be saved elsewhere.

        • +4

          All good tips.
Of course, nothing to stop us from doing those things and using a voucher for a further 4c/L saving.

  • +10

    It's better than nothing…

  • +3

Can’t remember the last time I used other fuel shops thanks to the chopper :D

    • +2

What's with all the chopper comments? Did I miss a trending story?

      • +10

The “chopper” is a reference to some OzBargainers spoofing their smartphone’s location so that the 7-Eleven app thinks they are located near a 7-Eleven fuel station selling dirt-cheap fuel.

Once their smartphone’s location is spoofed, you can “lock in” that dirt-cheap price and purchase fuel at that price at any 7-Eleven in Australia within the next seven days.

        • +5

To add to it, "Get to da Choppa!" is a line said by Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in Predator and is used here, as flying a chopper to a precise location is similar to spoofing GPS coordinates on a phone.

          • +2

@silverrat23: Lol good point, I completely glossed over the most important part of the question!

  • Can I use multiple cards to stack?

  • +3

I tried and get a message saying no card available…

  • +3

It says “No card available” for me. I think it might be checking valid email addresses…?

    • I'm in the same boat!

    • Verification is clicking the link they send via SMS so valid phone number seems key

  • +4

Used the APIA link instead of the Suncorp link and appears to have worked.

  • I think Suncorp has runs out of 'cards' (No card available)
    APIA still works.

  • +3

I’ve added this to the fuel discounts page.

My guess is that this offer cannot be redeemed in conjunction with the 6c/L RACT or AANT offers, so if you’re an RACT or AANT member visiting eligible locations (in TAS or NT, respectively), you’re better off using those existing offers.

Also, not all United fuel stations across Australia accept fuel discount cards. You should check the fuel station location finder to see whether your local United accepts these cards.

    • +1

Hmm…I didn’t realise that discounted United gift cards were available, I’ll have to see if I can stack with my RACT membership at the local United. It’s often just as cheap to visit a 24-hour TAS Petroleum site instead, but you can’t grab a hot pie and a cold drink at the same time. :-D

      • I thought Tas Petroleum sites were usually the cheapest, but I did a quick look in Launceston and Hobart:

        • Tas Petroleum in Invermay is actually currently 4c/L more expensive than the local United station (and that’s before you consider the discount card in this deal or the 6c/L RACT discount).

        • Tas Petroleum in Cambridge is 2c/L more expensive than the unmanned Caltex in Cambridge, or the Caltex in Howrah, but it is only 6c/L more expensive than United stations in Bellerive, Howrah or Sorell. However, it appears that the United in Howrah is still offering a 12c/L discount for RACT members filling up between 6pm and 6am, so in that case, you’re better off going to United in Howrah…

        • +1

Thanks for the information. I agree the sometimes United works out cheaper, and with discounted gift cards that would make it even better. TAS Petroleum is convenient to me so it's good to have choices.

    • My nearest participating United fuel station is in Dee Why which is only 16.5kms away from my home in Wollstonecraft. I thought there would be more locations.

      • +1

I guess it depends on where you live.

        • There are only three United locations within a 50km radius of me, and they’re not competitively priced when compared with the EG / Caltex Woolworths fuel station I regularly visit.

        • However, they have a sizeable footprint in Tasmania. IIRC, they acquired some Mobil sites about 15 years ago and have been steadily growing their presence ever since. I guess it helps United that RACT chose them about five years ago as its exclusive fuel discount partner.

        • +1

So many variables (or non variables), but shopping around does work:
          - Tasmania’s relatively static petrol prices (no cycles)
          - distance between suburbia fuel and the discounts out east.
          - Ampol/Caltex Gift Cards, United GC, Wish GC
          - Amex offers, BP / Caltex
          - filling 2 cars up fully, eg 100l, to maximise discounts
          - the RACT ongoing 6c United offer, Woolworths ongoing 6c offer
          - stacked discounts on car sales Coles Express code
          - flybuys offers (rare now)
          - in store spends for extra cents off (Coles Express 10c), Woolworths (4c)
          - BP Qantas offers (eg fill 2litres min fill up for 2000pts) etc
          - Hill St 10c offer

The list would be even bigger than that.

          • @Coops1: I had no idea Bennett’s Petroleum offered fuel discounts! That’s handy to know for next time…

  • I tried registering as I have Suncorp and it say’s no cards available

    • +1

      APIA still works.

  • -2

Also 4% off on their gift cards via Union Shopper

    • 5% if you use bank transfer

  • +1

Thanks OP. Suncorp offer just worked for me

  • +1

Got the APIA one then realised I looked nothing like a pensioner hahah tried Suncorp and it works now

  • Suncorp worked for me.

But I just realised I confused United Petrol for Liberty Petrol - would be great if it was Liberty.

  • Do you need to provide legit email details?

I see you need a legit mobile as the link is sms'd out.

Do you need to accept offers from United?

    • you need to provide mobile no so you receive SMS with link to add the digital card, you will also get acknowledgment email if valid email address, but guess not essential.

    • Disposable email is OK. I'm using mailinator.

  • I got the card, however just saw that United petrol near me has changed names and now it’s not United. The other United are far so don’t think will be able to use this.

  • If you want contaminated & poor quality fuel, go for United. Have seen many horror stories first hand. Search on Google for news related to them and you'll find quite a few.

    • +1

Well you obviously have no idea where the fuel comes from.

Nearly all issues will relate to the actual service stations themselves. ie. old tanks, improper/non-existent draining and inspection, improper refilling procedures.

      • I've always avoided anything except the big fellas (Coles, 711 etc) but realised I don't really have a strong foundation for why I do - I suppose someone just said once that United had "poorer quality fuel" so I just ran with it.

You reckon as long as the station itself is not dingy, I'll get just as much bang for buck for my petrol regardless of which brand name they slap on it?

        • If you want the honest truth, it's just plain racism. A particular ethnicity is prominent from the top to the individual managers/franchisees and ground staff. Also because they did a massive buying spree way back, buying up independents.

        • +1

From personal experience it has little to do with the name on the station and more to do with the specific service station.

Word of warning 7-Eleven nambour sells the worst fuel I have ever bought. Car ran shockingly after filling up there and had to try numerous fuel cleaners in that tank of fuel to get it to run half decently and a couple of tanks of fuel from other servos later it ran OK.

As a side note they also try and refuse fuel locks.

      • Or 'Fuel Extending' by the servo. Call me paranoid, but I don't risk it.

      • I agree with you on the second para and the responsibility of it does sit with United not just the operator. Most of the sites are leased not owned by operators and not maintained by United. The processes are non-existent and only enforced to harass/fine the operators.

Look up the PieFace fiasco where United forced site operators/commission agents to buy stock and agents incurred massive losses.

Its all there for you to look, if you choose to close your eyes, that's your own choice.

  • Anyone managed to figure out how to sign up if not Suncorp member?

    • +3

      This never checks APIA/Suncorp membership.

  • +1

Just signed up and was successful using the suncorp sign up link. I was not a suncorp member and it still works. Doesn't ask for anything unusual

  • +1

    can't complain United at all.
    sameday, Wool/Coles -189.90 , United 157.90

  • Lately i use 7 eleven apps. You can lock the price for the next seven days. It works for me.

  • Cheers OP - thats the local servo for me so will come in handy :)

  • -1

With fuel prices they way they are, a 4c/L discount doesn’t hold the same value as it did a few years ago. I can save almost 10 times that just by shopping around my local area. Last week the big stations (Coles/Woolworths, BP etc) had it for $1.96, and the independents were still at $1.63.

    • Do you have a United nearby? What was that price?

  • +2

Shopback gift cards for Ampol give 3% cashback. My local Ampol also accepts Woolies $0.04c off vouchers…..combine the two for a good saving!!! Also use petrolspy.com.au to find cheapest fuel prices in your area.

    • Yeah, they used to be 6% cashback. That deal was supposed to finish in December. When I went to buy a few more in November, the cashback went back to 3%. Still better value when the price of petrol is over $1.34 a litre than the 4 cents a litre. At $1.84 it is 5.52 cents a litre.

      • +1

Cashback have recently had a few 10% off $100 Swapback gift cards, which can then be swapped for other gift cards….including Ampol…hope they keep doing that :)

  • Regular price of petrol at Ampol, Shell, Woolies is not cheap, so even with these discounts, it is way more expensive than independent stations!

    • Yes as a rule that is correct, but, using Petrolspy for my area in SA it has…….Ampol $161.7 and cheapest independent is Liberty $159.9. If you take $0.04c off the Ampol price its $157.7, obviously cheaper…….also using the 3% off Cashback Ampol gift card it becomes $1.53…….

      • +1

That works well for you.. In Sydney near my place, price difference is something like 10-20c per lr., so struggling to justify or use the 4c discount from NRMA or Woolies.

        • +1

If you use Petrolspy and your postcode it will bring up all petrol stations near you. Its a great tool for getting lowest prices.

          • +1

@eddieboy2: I have the NRMA app which shows all petrol prices near my current location, guess it is similar to Petrolspy! I normally use it.

          • @eddieboy2: I use petrol spy too. I always go to metro petroleum, always the cheapest and 1 min drive

            • @FujiFruit: Is Metro different from United? I have Metro round the corner and it's consistent the cheapest one near me. Wonder if I can use this offer there?

              • +1

@huntabargain: Yes, they’re two completely different brands.

Metro is a brand name for a chain of independent service stations across Australia, and I only know one of one Metro in Australia that participates in any kind of fuel discount scheme.

      • RAA have the same app.

  • i wonder if anyone is still using the 7/11 fake location thing.

  • +1

One of the few service stations that has E85, thanks OP!

    • +2

      And Pie Face

  • +1

Thanks OP. Wasn’t aware of this and I also use Petrol Spy to find the cheapest

  • Thanks OP that’s great to know. So easy to add to Apple Pay.

  • How do you add this android phone

    • You need Google Pay app I think

  • +1

thanks op followed the links workout for me, added to google pay wallet

  • I am getting a 404 error

  • QR code that was loaded onto my Google pay didn't work for me. The cashier said it only works with a barcode and not QR and said I can show barcode from my phone. How does that work?? Definitely shows as an eligible station on the site.

    • Same issue here. Not sure how does it works.

    • I also had the same issue. Said only works with barcodes

      • Oh no maybe they realised anyone could get one so now only members can do it?

        • Haha thing is I'm actually a member! Would be keen to know if anyone has gotten it to work with the qr code.

    • +1

You could try to convert the QR code (which is a type of 2D barcode) into a 1D barcode using free online tools. That may work? Granted, that is only a workaround, and it doesn’t solve the actual problem (i.e. the fact that some United locations are not equipped with the ability to read 2D barcodes).

Otherwise, you’ll have to reach out to United Petroleum’s head office to get it sorted out.
