Kraken X15 Q i7-11800H QHD 165Hz 16GB 1TB NVMe SSD RTX3070 Gaming Laptop $1,899 + Delivery @ BPC Technology

600

How's it going OzBargain?!?!?

Really good deal on a solid RTX 3070 laptop. Having purchased the previous deal's X15 Q w/ 3070 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/674128) I can personally vouch for the solid magnesium alloy chassies, mechanical keyboard with excellent travel and one of the best trackpads.

Key Specs:
15.6" thin and light magnesium-alloy chassis
11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 Processor
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060/3070 graphics
Narrow bezel, IPS 16:9 display with QHD 165 Hz
Up to 64 GB dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory — (1x16GB)
Support for Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (Intel® XMP)
PCIe Gen 4 SSD directly connected to CPU — (1TB nVME)
Thunderbolt™ 4 port, 3 USB 3.2 ports, full-size HDMI port
Massive 94Whr battery
Optical-mechanical keyboard with silent switches and programmable per-key RGB backlighting
Intel two-year warranty

Would have definitely picked this up over my $2400 X15 Q which just has +16GB ram and +1TB ram over this deal. Oh well, at least I get to make an OzBargain post about it.

Did see people complaining about issues with the cooling (possibly driver related, fans do not spin upon waking from spin), but aside from that, the laptop is amazing for the value.

Laptop is an unbranded Intel X15 NUC which is 'built' by BPC (They install the RAM + SSD). Windows is preinstalled but is NOT activated.

Full specs Here, be sure to look at the 3070 SKU, also remember that it is BPC's responsibility, not Intel's for the SSD and RAM so those specs are not listed here. Not sure what is in these laptops and if they are the same as what others have been getting in the other Kraken laptops.

How long does battery last when doing normal web browsing and office work? Can this be charged via USB C?

    • +5

No USB-C charging, as the laptop requires way higher wattage than USB-C can supply. As for the battery life, it ranges between 5-9 hours depending on the tasks of course, but I've just been using mine for web-browsing and video consumption while I wait for Uni to start.

With the Intel NUC studio software, as well as the dedicated performance button (next to the power button), you can dial in the performance quickly and easily depending on your needs. I just leave it at battery saver for light tasks, the CPU is more than capable anyway.

      • +1

Would have been nice to support USB C charging for productivity usage when travelling.

        • As far as I know, only Lenovo and Asus provides USB C charging with their gaming laptops. No other brand currently does this.

          • +1

            @Brrrrt: Razer do don't they?

            • +1

@p3t0r: My bad, youre right the razer lineups also does support USB C charging.

  • +1

You should point out that this does not come with windows license. Which is a big cost for some people. Might not be worth the $100 saving over the other deal.

This one is also QHD 165Hz rather than FHD 240Hz in previous deal.

    • +4

Good point. For me, I just logged into my Microsoft account and clicked buttons on the Windows activation screen until my laptop became magically activated. Said I recently changed the hardware, so I probably stole it from an old laptop I had.

      • If you bought from the previous deal it should have its own windows license. The lite version does not.

        • +1

Oh really? Mine definitely was not activated out of the box, unless they slipped an activation code in the box somewhere.

    • +3

Just buy/grab some random Windows 7 key and then upgrade it yourself to Win10. Prob cost $10.

      • +3

Yeah I have like 7 old Windows 7-8 laptops with valid licenses that I can transfer anywhere at will.

    • +2

Activating windows for free is not a big deal and besides there's not much need to activate it anyway

  • +1

How much does this laptop weigh? Can't find any info on this.

  • +2

Good deal, bought one, thanks OP!

  • Kraken belong to which company?I can’t find the company information online. Thank you!

    • +1

BPC Technology, they use an Intel NUC Laptop Kit and add the memory and storage, they then sell it under the name Kraken.

  • Which OEM company it is?

    • BPC.

      • +2

I would actually say that Intel is the OEM. It's an Intel NUC that is already pre-built. BPC Tech, add the memory and storage to complete it.

        • +4

If you want to get technical, even Intel isn't the OEM… 3 levels deep.

          • @BigRiggs24: It looks like an intel NUC laptop barebone with BPC customized with RAM and SSD.

            • +2

@getit: It seems to be a Tongfang laptop chassis. They make OEM designs for other manufacturers to put their logos on.

              • +1

@fastnet: not quite, it's built by tongfang but compared to other TF chasis (say the ones used by infinity and such), this specific chasis is designed in cooperation with intel.

  • at this price, there have to be some cut corners somewhere for sure.

    • Not with build quality it seems. I feel like BPC either struck a great deal or they have too much stock. I would honestly like to know too.

      • Based on what?
Who has extensively reviewed the cooling?
The price is right, I'd question any cooling system trying to reign in a 3070.

        • Jarrod's Tech did a review of the XPG Xenia alias MAG 15R about 3-4 months ago on YouTube.

  • How does it compare to the lenovo legion 3070 laptops

    • +1

No Mux and worse cooling but it comes with 1TB and cheaper.

      • How bad is the cooling? Is it able to run under load for a few hour gaming session?

Anyone hook it up to an external monitor? How's the laptop handle it?

        • There are discussions on other threads on ozbargain you may want to lookup.

How the laptop behaved will have a lot to do with the resolution of the external monitor and your usage. I'm assuming gaming. At 1080p it won't break sweat but it will struggle if you are using it at 4K.

          • @[Deactivated]: @dreaminbargains Do you happen to have a link to one of the threads? I'd super appreciate it

            • +3
              • @[Deactivated]: @DreaminBargains - cheers mate! Super helpful.

What do you reckon between the Kraken and the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/682539 - with cashback it comes down to $2226.83 - pros/cons for the Legion's extra $328?

                • +2

@mattkirkey: You are welcome mate. @Brrrt has often done comparisons and outlined the pros and cons of the Kraken v Legion but if I'm spending $2000 I want an established brand name with the proven warranty support. The Kraken looks great on paper and even better if you use an external monitor but I'd buy the Legion personally.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for the feedback and opinion. I went with the Legion given I'm going to be travelling a fair amount this year, plus moving up to Cairns for 6 months and don't want to fxck around with support from a smaller shop in Melbs. I'm also going to have an external monitor so just makes sense. Cheers mate!

                • @mattkirkey: Hey just wondering where did you find the cashback offer for the legion ?
                  Thanks !

                  • @Simplicityy: Just through the regular Cashrewards plugin. Unfortunately it looks like it dropped from 10% to 7% for Legion as of this morning.

                • @mattkirkey: What cashback? Are you sure cashreward or shopback will accept Lengaming promo code?

                  • @[Deactivated]: grimace emoji I'm not, but somewhat confident. FYI the Cashrewards cashback has dropped from 10% on Legion to 7% as of this morning.

"Cashback is however eligible on codes generated by Lenovo on its website, even though they may not be listed on Cashrewards, provided last click before purchase is from Cashrewards."

                    • @mattkirkey: Awesome thanks for that ! Can finally purchase the legion

                    • @mattkirkey: So did your cashback accepted by cashrewards? I want to buy too, but still torn between buy now or wait for the next gen cpu, btw it will be 8 months wait for the current one.

                      • +1

@[Deactivated]: Hey mate. It registered and it's in my rewards list as "Pending", estimated approval May 20th.

                        • @mattkirkey: Has it been shipped yet, the amd that I want shipped in 8 weeks (correction to my reply above)? By 8 weeks maybe the next gen cpu already comes out, decision, decision…

  • Probably worth noting if you're spending this much, factor in another stick of 16gb ram.

  • Is this 145W TDP?

    • yes

      • -2

Uhh, the website says its 45W tdp…. 😅

        • Which is correct since it is referring to the CPU not the GPU.

  • -3

gees I bet this laptop has more power than My desktop :/ (2600K GTX980)

    • +3

      A lot more

    • +1

Benchmarks higher than my gaming desktop (OC 2070s, i7 7700). The GPU is 2% faster and the CPU is like 40% faster, damn!

  • -3

PCIe Gen 4 SSD directly connected to CPU

    Oh yeah?

    • +3

      Yeah

      • -3

Holy crap! I thought they were installed into the motherboard. I didn't know they could be to the CPU!

        • +4

The PCI lanes the SSD uses are connected directly to the CPU as opposed to going through the chipset. The SSD isn't on the CPU.

  • -2

Is there any branding on the latpop?

    • -1

Perhaps read the prior comments, it is an intel oem modified by bpc

    • +1

they sold this "kraken" branded laptops here on other posts. From what others are saying, no branding stickers etc found in their purchases.

      • Thank you. I hadn't seen those previous posts. It was good to read through them.

    • +1

there's no branding. the lid is plain black, no stickers or anything. no other signs of any brand anywhere

the model sticker on the bottom says Intel X15

      • So no "Kraken" branding anywhere? So later when the time comes to selling on eBay, I can simply just list it as an Intel Nuc x15?

  • +1

Seems like a cracking bit of gear. I only want it for Minecraft rtx and astrophotography stacking, looks like it would be killer for that. Thanks op

    • +7

      It's a Kraken deal!

  • +1

Does anyone know how much this weighs? The site doesn't tell it.
EDIT: ahh nvm it's around 2kg.

  • This is the BYOD for school that all the cool kids have

  • +1

an important fact is that this is without any windows licence

    I got the X15 F (3070, FHD) for $1999 with windows included

I returned mine but that's another story. just couldn't get the cooling system to work as it should. it was overheating and something was creaking inside. damn scary

also coil whine from keyboard backlight on battery power. loud and annoying

other people said theirs isn't that bad, so I guess QC isn't perfect.

    • Did you get a refund or a replacement?

      • refund

    • @shabaka, do you change laptops every time there is some form of crypto volatility?

      • +1

        haha no

well it's my hobby really, trying laptops and selling them on, but this time it's different, I am not selling on but returning, what, 3 laptops in a row (before that, sold 3 on in a row)

just can't get a stable working unit, for crying out loud

next, arriving tomorrow, is a refurbished Aorus 17g with 11th gen Intel and 3070.

if that is trash, I don't know, I am going to call it quits and build a desktop. FFS

  • Wonder will a generic OEM laptop impact resale value after few years when you want to upgrade?

    • Yes

    • yes it definitely will. however its also cheaper than branded options in the first place.

      • Actually it is branded, It's just an Intel X15 NUC Laptop, My friend got one from this seller and it has no logo's etc, it came in the official Intel X15 NUC box, the packaging is significantly nicer than my Dell G15.

        • Can we buy direct from Intel lol?

          • @CVonC: Intel don't sell it directly in Australia, you can either buy it as a barebone from one of the official resellers or where the retailer chooses the components like a prebuilt.

            • @Jimbuscus: wonder how much it is barebone. might be a bargain if you choose your own components.

              • +1

@CVonC: For whatever reasons, PCCG are selling the lower 3060 barebone for more than the above deal.

When my friend got his X15 3060 from BPC for A$1,599 with components, it was a great deal especially because Intel uses the top TDP for their GPU's.

                • @Jimbuscus: Yeah that was the boxing day sale. I would've gotten that had I not already got the Nitro 5 3060 during black friday. Although no numpad on the kb is kind of a dealbreaker for me -_-

  • Does this have any USB C ports at all or how many of each are there on this device?

Also who handles support should it require it and who and where does it get sent to and who pays?

    • one USB C with TB4.0

Kraken will deal with the warranty

  • weird, I just missed out on their 3060 qhd a few weeks ago, really wanted the high res screen. spoke to them for a couple of weeks about a replacement and that the 3070 qhd option was a bit too much of a price jump (at the time), and they were adamant that new stock was nowhere on the horizon

so are these a batch of new stock, or leftover original 3070 qhds stripped down, or returned stock back in store

  • Anyone know what the wattage is on the RTX3070 for this one?

    • +1

      145w

  • +1

The 240hz is back in stock for $100.. mmmm

    • +2

and it also comes with licensed windows.

  • +1

why would the 240Hz FHD variant be $100 more expensive at $1999 - am I missing something here?
bought the 240Hz FHD 3070 and now wishing I got the QHD and saved $100

    • +1

Competitive fps gamers prefer a higher refresh rate and prioritise that over resolution. I'm a gamer and personally would prefer 165hz QHD though

    • +2

I am the member of the FHD camp. in the games I play, FPS are more important than details, and FHD is plenty detailed for me, so FHD it is

also, I can run a 15.6" FHD screen at 100% (zero scaling) in Windows which renders a lot of scaling related issues irrelevant. priceless

so I wouldn't buy a 15.6" QHD laptop even if it was an awesome deal. which is why I scratched some of the Lenovo Legion options off the list straight away as they come preconfigured with QHD

    • The only difference I see seems like the Windows OS license is sold separately with this one, and the FHD comes with a Windows license.

  • +2

Fantastic price and specs! Beats a lot of desktop deals around.
This (assuming cooling works well) is equivalent to an R5 5600X and RTX 3060 Ti desktop.
    Except PORTABLE

    I bought a 10gen with 3070 in June for $1700.
Meaning I "saved $200 and an 8 month wait" compared to someone who buys this and gets a 15w GPU uplift, 11gen, and an optical keyboard.
    About equivalent value, I guess?

  • Whats the resolution?

    • 2560 × 1440 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio @ 165Hz

      • Unfortunate.. If this was FHD I'd be right on it
