Whirlpool forum is out of control

The whirlpool forum is out of control. Its full of bullies and trollers with mods who protect the bullies.

I've been a member of that forum since 2002.

Has anyone else experience this?

Is the ozbargin forum a lot better?

Nah you're nasty judging by the way you frame your statements. Ranting and raving seems to be the jist of your comments.

      • +2

I have had multiple comments deleted for some pretty incredibly petty reasons. e.g. one for using the word "crap" to describe a product. Another time for saying an idea was stupid as this was classed as a person attack even though the idea was incredibly stupid. Mods can be incredibly strict on the modding, especially if it is something they personally don't like.

(I'm) entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.

Whirlpool Forum Is Not What It Was

      What was it before then?

      • -2

        a measly trickle of piss

      • +8

It wasn't overly censored/moderated like it is now, the threads were more open to free discussion. Now everything, especially in the News threads, seems to be marked as "off-topic" or "trolling" if it doesn't follow the agreed narrative. This is from coming from someone who still has a "bright" aura on WP.

        • +1

Yes! Definitely in News threads I notice it far more often.

        • -1

They are simply following the misinformation & disinformation strategies the government are implementing under the guise of protecting people from harm. It is propaganda, no doubt, but they believe they are doing the right thing & it gives them a sense of control.

        • +2

Same here. Get involved in the wrong argument or get on the wrong person's side and you get bullied and trolled. The difference between Whirlpool and a more honest forum is that the rules ensure that the trolls get so good at it, that they basically gaslight you into stepping over the mod's "thin red line". I know because after I got kicked out, I came to realise how I used to do it myself; you try to get a point across but work within the moderation rules. You become end up becoming a gaslighter. After I realised how my argument method had been formed by Whirlpool, I realisec how shameful it was. And I was "Pervasively Light" on WP.

And get on the wrong side of Thor or Tangles and they'll make sure you're gone. They'll stalk your every word and wait for you to trip up just to get rid of you.

      • +2

It was a bunch of people urinating in a circular direction into each other's hands but over time it turned into many people doing it thus creating the Whirlpool Forums

    • +13

I'm gonna take a wild guess the OP has an 'interesting' Whirlpool post history and dismal aura.

      • …. dismal aura

lol - green tourmaline should fix that

      • lol….but me auras!!!

      • +1

I had a "Pervasively Light" aura and … I actually agree with the OP. It's become a haven for gaslighters.

    • +2

welcome to 15 years ago! ….at least!

    • +9

It’s just a forum why do you care?

        • +52

Your just as bad as the people you complain about.
Instead of just answering or ignoring and moving on you feel the need to respond in some sarcastic garbage.

          • +10

@PAEz: 100% this. I had a little sympathy for op initially, was quite open, and was annoyed at the disparaging comments and responses from others.

As the thread went down and I saw OPs responses my mind slowly changed… OP doesn't seem to be interested in engaging, but only wants validation.

            • +4

              @ratman:

OP doesn't seem to be interested in engaging, but only wants validation

This is the MO of every OzBargain forum poster

        • +5

Yeah, OP's experience with forums is a complete mystery /s

        • +12

Now we know why your question got deleted…

You’re just an angry crank and a self righteous boiler!

    • +15

Why do you waste people's time when you could just google the answer? They don't have that in Qld yet?

    • +3

geez…3 x reports! the oxbargain thread natzees are out in force!

    • +16

The commenters in the EV car threads are really intense. Say anything negative about a Tesla and you will get absolutely hammered. It's hilarious watching them try to defend new stalkless indicators in the Tesla 3 update. They simply cant comprehend why anyone wouldnt buy a $70k EV instead of literally anything else

      • They should rename the forum to Tespool

      • +1

Nowadays there are teams and groups of people employed
in a kind of information warfare, to drown down any opposition to a guided narrative.

Whether it's forums or any social-media posts,
the commenters use tactics to stifle any debate
to bury other opinions, and even resort to trolling.

You just have to assume this or they're "bots".
Then, there are those that are neither of them,
but they get emboldened by 'seeing' this behaviour too,
and imitate this, for their own validation.

I said my disabled son would like to know

Does it make a difference whether you asked or your disabled son asked?

        • +27

They've asked an interesting question and presented it in a straight manner without accusation or invective.

Given your reaction. I'm pretty skeptical that WP is the problem. Based on this thread you lash out at very minor negativity, skepticism, questioning.

Here are two potential answers you could have gone with instead to give you an idea of what I would expect from someone who is discussing something in good faith

'perhaps not but I just wanted to set some context for why I was asking'.

'i think so.y experience is that people pick on and discriminate against the disabled and their family. I can't prove it but I suspect it was a motivation in my treatment.'

          • +4

@jacross: The OP sounds exactly like some crank character from kings quest that responds negatively to every question you can put in except that one single thing that gets him to give you the mcguffin you need to pass that part of the game

            • +1

@Jackson: Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango were better games :p

              • +1

@ankor: Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island 1 are possibly my all time favourites

            • -1

@Jackson: Lol at Ops new addition to the Op, calling anyone who isn't circle jerking with him on the same level as "challenged".

I'm not an active user on whirlpool, and I don't doubt that it's full of a-holes. But man, in some instances, whirlpool may not actually be the issue.

            • @Jackson: God. Kings Quest was so brutal. Those Sierra games were a very large and very frustrating part of my childhood.

        • +13

You wonder why you have faced those issues… I don’t think whirlpool is the problem.

        • This is the funniest response. No doubt OP is a troll?

    • +1

It'll happen to OZB too one day. It happens to all sites no matter how big or small they are. Facebook is kind of immune because it's made up of individual communities and there are no "super mods" or admins that govern or even care what happens in each community, but you can think of Facebook as more like the entire internet rather than an individual social site.

      • +7

Have you been on Facebook lately? All social media has deteriorated to a whole new low.

        • My bubble is pretty clean, mostly just memes and jokes. I think Facebook puts you in whatever bubble you naturally want to be in, or maybe not the bubble you want but the bubble you deserve. Which is scary because Facebook could probably swing elections if they wanted to. Facebook could float or sink a lot of companies too if they wanted too, it's an insane amount of power. Luckily Facebook seems mostly satisfied making ad money and not meddling in world affairs, mostly.

          • +1

            Hilarious, but probably on point.

Well, Brexit and Trump are someone glaring counterexamples that are going to screw the world for decades to come.

I think thats why most aussies frequent OCAU and not whingepool.

      • +4

I find OCAU pretty dead and probably more of a boys club now than ever before.

        • +2

OCAU is dead. only used for the market sections these days

      • +2

There's about 12 of us left there and the average age is likely 50+.

      • +2

I go to each one depending what information I'm after. Whirlpool specialises in Telco/broadband stuff, OCAU in computer hardware and here namely for the bargains. As always there's a few fringe areas for certain types of discussions but I dont pick sides, also try not act like a dick too often :) Cant say I've had too many issues with any of the forums over the years either.

        • OzBargain seems to still be in the perfect middle. in the Venn diagram of
specialising in computers, telecommunications and consumerist bargains ?

    • +1

Post the thread or where you posted these questions. The only way your post would get deleted with in 60 seconds is if their security protocols thought you where a ghost (a previously banned user.)

    • +5

      HEAVILY OVER-MODERATED

      MAKE YOUR POST HERE

      • +1

Yeah make it here so we can tear you apart as well.

    • +8

There is definitely over-moderation at WP.

      • +7

and i bet its still the same over-moderating moderators from 10-15 years ago still over-moderating…..LOL!

        • +5

it's odd really, because, the admin seems nice.. yet he has all these dotards modding.

          • +3

@bohn: Owner letting his little demons run around doing the dirtywork

      • +2

Yeah I gave up on whirlpool because of its over-moderation.

I enjoy ozbargain. I like the shit talking, brutality, super blunt honesty and freedom for all threads and topics to take their own direction whatever that may be.

Most mods on whirlpool guide discussions with their moderation powers according to their personal views, if your views or opinions don't align you get silenced. The end result is the one big cicrle jerk it has turned into today.

    • +13

Anyone else experience this outright hate?

      Whirlpool has never really changed?

I made my first post there in 2008. It's always been an emotionally devoid source of info. You get in, get your info and then get out.

It doesn't really have a community. You have a few forum members who have been there for years and while they have often have 'strong' views, they can't be outright trolls like on OzBargain or the Australian subreddits.

      • +4

True! I log in every other year with a very specific tech issue, get my answer, log out for another year.
        It's been great

        • +3

Based on the ops post history, they do the same thing on ozbargain…..

      • +1

        Dead on well put.

I also feel third person pain of seeing regulars I've interacted with there for years, get permabanned

      • +1

That sounds great. Seriously, it sounds like a really good thing.

I haven't used it much, but when I have, it's been purely as a decent quality repository for Oz-oriented tech questions.

        • +2

yeah people complaining about a great source of info remind me of people complaining about getting treated badly on Elitist Jerks WOW forums back in the day.

    • +4

      over-eggoed moderator deletes you.

What a yolk. Their brains must be scrambled.

      • thanks for getting the joke…

    • Probably just asked in the wrong subforum.

      • but the abuse in the right forum is herrendous.

    • +12

got perma banned from hurlpool at least a decade ago now.

heavy handed moderators who pretty much shutdown any discussion or opposing views. pretty much view anything which isn't the flavor of the forum as "trolling"

non-stop threads on computer builds by people who go to pccg and just "add to cart" all the most expensive parts in each category………"rate my 6k gaming build" - ye rightio chief

      • +4

yep, its ridiculous. You get labelled as a troll for simply having an opinion that isnt shared with the majority or even with just some of the louder voices

        • +1

All staff are in on it

Same could be said about OZB or any other forum covering their arses in TWAM, but still miles better

          • +3

            @capslock janitor:

All staff are in on it

Some of the more aggressive posters all seem to have very positive aura's too which is so weird. Its all a bit of a circle jerk.

      • This post reminded me of computer swap meets - remember those? The stench…

    • +3

      What's scraping metals?

    • +6

I assume almost all the moderators on whirlpool are similar to this guy:

      https://youtu.be/GXAiBpIz2_I?si=k90ukUZMT4DlqaQy

Don’t take it personally OP, some people are just salty ass keyboard warriors who get off with what little power they have.

Have you heard of Reddit… it gets much worst out there!

      • -2

thanks I hardly use wp, it was just stuff I could find the details for… there are a few of the salty souls on here as well - my purpose was to know if the abusive nature of WP was common or I missed something. cheers.
