  • what is battery life like?
can you change to 32 gb ram?

Being so thin but with 11th gen Intel H CPU and a GPU is it safe to assume it's very limited by it's thermal performance?

not sure how much they've improved the past few years, i got a 9570 a few years back with a i7-8570H and 1050 Ti and honestly was just not enjoyable to use. Fans always blasting, incredibly hot doing any activity, battery was pretty poor overall just using it for work (light googling, ppt and excel). I hope they've gotten better but i don't think i can ever see myself going back to one.

Had the same configurations as you plus the 4k touch screen panel. Was only really good for the first couple of months. But everything you mentioned, fits the experience I had with it

Dell made the mistake of trying to sell the 10th gen models for too long after the 11th gen was released.

Then the new Apple Mac M1's got released.

Also, I read people in the USA getting discounts on premium care, but I couldn't get them to budge on the premium care price when I contacted them.

I decided the heating issues made these not worthwhile in comparison to an Apple mac, and got an Apple Mac instead.

    I'm not regretting my decision.

12th gen not far off now.
    Biggest change in many years.

    • Wait what? What's the main benefit?

      • Should have better power consumption (longer battery life) and peak performance.

It's effectively similar to the Mac M1 chip with separate CPU cores optimised for speed and power efficiency.

You can read about the desktop chips to get a feel for what Intel have achieved.

        • Intel 12th gen is a significant improvement with the hybrid CPU architecture. They should also offer noticeably better battery life on light duty tasks as they'll use the efficiency cores.

Under full load they still consume approx. 3x more power than Apple M1 chips though. It might take Intel many more years or even decades to catch up to the power efficiency of M1 chips.

Have got this but the FHD version. No issues at all with mine (so far) except the battery isn't obviously going to be as good as the built in graphics card laptops. I'm getting about 6-8 hours so if you're going for the high res ones, expect lower battery life. Yea you can start to hear the fan if you push the device but not annoyingly loud. Got it from the refurbished/outlet store: https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/shop/laptops-tablets?displ…

    • I got one for a friend when they asked me to get them sorted with a new machine. I told them money no object, I'd get a XPS or a X1 Carbon, but the X1 didnt come in a 15'. Any machine with that much power in a small package is going to get hot. I deliberately overspec'd based on usage so that it wouldnt need to run everything at 100% all the time, thats kept it fairly cool so far.

    • Dell Outlet can be great. They often have further price reductions too.

There's quite a few of the refurb Inspiron 16 Plus currently for decent prices. Perhaps due to extra returns after trackpad issues.

The 16 Plus is not a bad XPS alternative for those who want to spend less. It's basically the same internals, with a different shell and 3K 16:10 (non touch) screen.

A refurb one equivalent to the XPS 15 OP posted is about $1500. $1650 is you want a 3060.

  • Good laptop. Had older xps models and they had serious issues. Used this one for a while and it is much improved. Very nice deisgn that is pleasure to use. The CPU power tuning is done well, fans don't get too loud and the power is not completely throttled down on battery. Saying that I'd wait for the 12th gen model unless you need something now

  • A $3k XPS with only a 3050?? Outrageous!

    • It's due to thermal limitations of the compact chassis. You can have a 3060 in a XPS 17.

      • Interestingly you can get the 3060 in the Inspiron 16 Plus - though to be fair its chassis is slightly larger than the XPS 15 because of the 16:10 screen.

They limit it to 60W, rather than the 70W in the XPS 17 though.
