    • It's interesting to see how desperate some are to travel to these countries.

And if you bring your kids to travel and they get covid and you don't

Woops wrote that one backwards. If you get covid but they don't**

Yeah it's a crap policy that separates families. I wouldn't take my kids there to travel. Not worth the risk/costs.

Each person basically has to pay additional $700+ (minimum) in hidden costs (multiple tests, mandatory hotel stay, insurance).

So if you have a family of 5, that's already $3500+ in hidden costs.

And just pray you don't get covid. Okay even if you don't get covid, their policy ensures that the chance of you getting covid increases lol.

Hear me out. Preflight test. Day 1 tests. All clear? Then you're good to go. Roam around for 4 days in the city then required to go back to mandatory hotel and test again on the 5th day. So if you didn't have covid before, you'd probably end up with covid now lol. Covid is rampant in Thailand and a lot of people do not test (as there are harsh outcomes for testing positive so most don't test).

      This is our situation:

PCR test before departure AU$79.00 per person (at Histopath Sydney Airport)
*PCR test on arrival at Phuket 2200BHT per person (say AU$95)
Compulsory US$50k covid insurance 2000BHT per person (say AU$85)
      1-night 5
hotel isolation/quarantine AU$200 inclusive of private car transfer
*Supervised RAT test to return to Australia 500BHT per person (say AU$22) (we used Medconsult in Bangkok, or 2000BHT/$85 for a PCR test).

PCR costs are unavoidable, the three tests required is AU$200 per person (marked *). The 2nd test in Thailand is free.

The $50K covid insurance is a necessary expense as who flies around the world without insurance? In the unfortunate event you catch covid, this travel insurance should cover your quarantine period under the medical expense (of hospital/quarantine stay).

The first night (or any nights) staying in the hotel should not be counted because you would pay to stay somewhere anyway, besides, you can choose a hotel to isolate in based on location, star rating, amenities, pricing etc so you can stay in a hotel that is $50 per night if you desire.

The reality is, leisure or unessential travel is not for the faint-hearted right now, let alone newbies or rookies. There are many covid rules and regulations to comply with, it takes time and money, and "stress" at each step of the way esp when it comes to testing. But if you are savvy or a regular international traveller like we are, especially prior to Covid, then you will do what it takes to make travel happen again. Looking forward to flying internationally again a couple more times this year.

You were probably on the Thailand Test & Go scheme version 1.0. Test and Go scheme version 2.0 (which only began in February 2022) requires mandatory 'day 1' hotel isolation/test/airport transfer and now also a 'day 5' hotel isolation/test (2nd test is no longer free - you need to pay in advance for it).

Test pricing can vary wildly depending on the location in Thailand. I just used $140 as the average pricing as they can vary from $90 to $190.

        For example: https://www.vela360hotels.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/VDU…

Insurance yeah can vary as well depending on what company you go with, what they cover and how long you travel for. I wouldn't recommend anyone travel to Thailand just for 1-2 weeks only. Because all it takes is a positive result to completely ruin all your holiday plans.

I'm pretty travel savvy myself and I'm actually going to Thailand in late March for visiting family.

Also another thing to note is that some countries you are transiting thru will even have their own covid rules even though it won't be your final destination.

For example Thailand has 72 hours pre-flight RT-PCR test requirements but Singapore has 48 hours pre-flight RT-PCR or medically supervised RAT.

So if you're going to Thailand through Singapore, a 72 hour pre-flight test would not qualify you to travel. You would require a test (RT-PCR) 48 hours prior to flight.

        • Why wouldn't the 48 hour Singapore test qualify for the 72 hour Thailand test?

          • @jackspratt: It would lol. Taking a 72 hour test wouldn't but a 48 hour would qualify.

I think you misread my comment.

The reality is, leisure or unessential travel is not for the faint-hearted right now, let alone newbies or rookies.

I think this sums it up nicely. Travel has always been about adventure and some people just aren't cut out for it. I knew a guy that wouldn't go to Bali ever (before covid) because his mum told him they were all terrorists there. People like this can't be helped which is probably a great thing for the rest of us because it means much less idiots out on the trail :)

        • +2

I don't think they are idiots ( just misled by ignorant people who inturn were led the samewy, travel is an important life lesson and gives all people an insight into other cultures. More people travelling outside Australia will at least teach people to not to be prejudice and open their eyes. In reality everyone should go somewhere, break their comfort and learn some bloody valuable life lessons like I did.

      • What covid insurance provider did you go with?

        • +1

I'd go with Axa Sawadee or Tune, which would cover you for the most part and fairly affordable.

People really need to do their research

And your research is SMH and Twitter? ROFL…

Living in fear is a choice, some people choose a different path.

      • +4

It's not about living in fear 🤣. I'm traveling to Thailand next month. This is about being aware and most people ain't.

        • +1

I'm traveling to Thailand next month

Sweet, make sure to report back with the latest info. I'm planning my next trip now and it says a lot about this 'pandemic' when the biggest risk is not the disease but the government bureaucracy 😁

      • and wheres your research from?

    • Sounds like a great time to fly without kids running around

  • +1

Don't forget to factor in Jetstar flight delays and rescheduling. Still remember vividly the chaos of Dreamliner breaking down Bali 2018 to Brisbane and the 3 day furlough in Kuta before returning via Sydney with 6 year old granddaughter. Can't imagine the same situation under covid cost wise as Jetstar are difficult to deal with at the best of times.

  • No Sydney to Tokyo?

  • What's the best holiday to go now?

    • Bunnings, then back to the garden
