  • Decent price for an instock card, although I suspect with 12gb cards arriving and looming market changes, we will see alot more 3080s around this pricepoint.

    • +3

I am also waiting for further price drop too. ETH 2.0 is coming this year and the price should not stay at this level if GPU mining ETH is not available then.

      • Personally I already bit the bullet for 3xxx gpu, and I don't regret it (given light mining when not gaming recoups some of the cost).

But yeah, to your point, bit of a hard decision for anyone that hasn't purchased one yet, given they may not recoup enough before ETH pos and intel arc impact prices.

      • +9

Don't hold your breathe mate. I was mining in 2017 and back then they were advertising POS would happens mid-year and here we are in 2022.

        • this is still $1000 dearer for the HOLDer budget.

      • +4

If I had a dollar for every time ETH 2.0 was 'coming this year' I'd be richer than the crypto miners.

  • Poll: Would you rather pay $1888 or $1887?

    • +1

      Who has it for 1877?

      • -3

        No one yet, just curious.

        • +2

8 is a lucky number, wouldn't be surpised to see a few drop a dollar for goodluck

          • @misunderstood98: In that case they should make it $8888.88 😋

            • @[Deactivated]: CNY buyers might be superstitious and justify $1, although an additional $7k might be a stretch 😉

    • Haha this is a very curious question. The obvious answer is 7. Why the question?

Got one of these from techfast about a year ago, the one i got was the non LHR though but still should be basically the same in build. Ive had 0 issues with it and its a solid card would recommend it, even thought its not one of the big brands ive used it every day with 0 hiccups. I wouldnt use their software because its trash but who uses their gpu manufactures software except msi.

    • +8

even thought its not one of the big brands

Actually it's one of Nvidia's largest AIB partners.

Galax is owned by Palit and has been in the game for aaaaages. In my experience the quality is often better than the well-known brands (esp. Gigabyte).

      • I know this but most people in Australia dont know palit and even less know galax. This is like saying Chinas big brands are big brands in Australia and it doesnt correlate worldwide.

        • +1

I've owned far more Palit/Galax/Gainward GPUs over the years than Gigabyte. Gigabyte is a bigger brand name, sure, but that's because they sell a variation of products not because of which country they're focused in.

      • Only just checked Wiki for Palit to know that it's actually based in Taiwan and have their factories in China. Palit owns both Gainward and Galax, and that finally make sense why in the teardown videos all three have the same PCB and parts.

I have to admit that as a Taiwanese migrant I have never heard of them until last couple of years… They really need to work on their branding :)

  • I'm confused with the teardown video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I68ochB5BB0) OP has posted. If you forward to 17:45 where he removed the heatsink, it looks like there is no thermal grease on the main chip, but there are thermal pads on the other chips. Wtf?

    • +2

Good point mate. I dont think Galax will make this stupid mistake. The video creator may clean the core for better presentation? The card's thermal pads seems decent and we can also add thermal pads at the backplate.

    • +6

He says in the comments that the card had been disassembled previously to mount a water lock, and that they didn't bother to repaste it for this teardown.

Got a further analysis for the circuit board etc. :

I have this card. Got it during first round of release. Same time as when Cyberpunk was all the hype. Needed that crisp night city visuals.
Ended up upgrading my PC around this card.
Only for it to be used on nothing but Rocket League.
    A+++
    Would recommend to a friend.

For real, only issue is the rgb isn’t smooth.
Other than that I have had 0 issues.
    I have it vertical mounted.

  • Good price, I have the Galax 2080 TI SG which looks very similar to this, fantastic card!

  • +2

Is that a mugger on the front of the box? Glad the card manufacturers are finally being honest about their trade.

  • back to $2199

    • Seems to be 1888 right now

      • oh yeah, on sae again!

      • Updated. Thanks mate.

        • Looks like more room for prices to come down, hope to see 3080 at 6800 price soon

          • @kaikor: If BTC keeps dropping, it will happen. $1,888 is closed to the retail price in China at the moment so I think it is not a bad price.

  • +1

    $1,888 is a great price.

Buy it now or regret missing out.

    • +1

Yes lucky 8. for lucky miners.

  • Any recommendations of 3080 or 3080Ti with an All In One water and air setup? I'm not happy with running these cards (currently with a 1080) at 80 degrees when at full load for long periods of time (happens quite a lot with intensive games on a 3440 x 1440 resolution).

    Thanks.

    • MSI GeForce RTX 3080 SEA HAWK X 10G LHR:

      https://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/121457?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIx…

Not the best price at the moment but it runs at around 50c when running furmark.

      • Thank you so much!

My 1080 is an MSI and it's been rock-solid stable for the past 5 1/2 years, but with the recent bullcrap from certain previously reputable manufacturers messing up with poor thermal pads and garbage capacitors, any idea on the quality of these MSI boards these days?

        Thanks again!

        • You may need to replace the thermal pads if you want to do casual mining when not gaming. If you are only gaming, it should be fine to only stock VRAM pads.

I also have this card from the TF deal. Does me fine but one of the poorest 3080s around for perf
