I have been tracking this today and it just got reduced by another 7% just now. I thought this is a pretty good price for a 4gb chromebook.

Intel Celeron N3350 Processor, 32GB eMMC, 4GB RAM - eww!!!!

    • -1

its good for netflix and emails!

      • +9

With that delightful sub FHD screen

        • it's only 11 inch screen though

        • +1

I had the same resolution screen on a 15.6" laptop for 3 years. Don't worry, you'll survive. For $197 it's still perfect for someone who needs it for basic tasks

    • +5

I manage hundreds of these in an enterprise environment and they run great, ChromeOS isn't as resource heavy as Windows.

  • +3

    Is this landfill laptop?

    • No way!

  • I'd rather buy a Supreme Brick

  • "Military grade standard MIL- STD 810H"

    What's that?

    • someone said that it looks more like a fisher price toy for a child than a flashy laptop. I think they are intimating that it will take more wear and tear than the laptops in this price range. Maybe better for school aged kids or clumsy adults…

    Nice

    Does Zoom work on this?

    • +4

When Zooming on Chromebooks, make sure the students avoid Gallery Mode. This can overtax the Chromebook processor and cause glitching. Zoom likes to say "internet connection unstable" when it's actually something else causing issues with the session. … A high number may indicate a weak wireless or internet connection. https://www.google.com/search?q=ASUS+Chromebook+CX1+and+zoom…

    HD NanoEdge Display

Whatever that means, 1366x768 with thick bezels is neither HD nor "NanoEdge".

Regardless, decent price for the hardware.

    • +6

They skate through with HD as technically HD is 1280x720, and Full HD is 1920x1080. Will still be an awful display though.

      • +1

Ah so when you watch native HD content, you can have a 43 (w) x 34 (h) pixel NanoEdge border on your screen.

        • Everyone knows the cinematic experience is improved with an inter washed out border to separate from the outer grey border!

  • +2

Cheap, but go in with your eyes open. No updates after less than 2.5 years really does make this pretty disposable.

    • +1

Just the difference between bloated Windows + long term support vs lightweight ChromeOS with a built in expiry date I suppose.

      • Yep they’re all crap 😂

    • +1

      Hmmm…

We weren’t expecting much from this hardware, but amazingly, we were still disappointed by its performance. In Geekbench 5 the CX1 delivered single- and multi-core results of 269 and 516. These are terrible scores – three and five times slower than the Acer and Lenovo laptops respectively.

      And then this

…it couldn’t handle Spotify simultaneously – music skipped when we switched between tabs and apps.

I'd be expecting some frustrating performance.

I picked up the HP from JB ages ago for 115 or so after cash back. It's truly been a great laptop, couldn't have done without it during covid lockdowns. Having said that I believe it has a amd a4 or a6,so don't know if this is as good, maybe someone can weigh in? I would check on how much they go for before buying this one.

That actually had a great screen too, FHD 14", and can dim right down to nothing which makes it a great laptop to use on the couch at night

    • +1

I got one of those. Great price especially with a better bigger 14" FHD screen ( still not great as not IPS nor bright ).

Has 2 x usb C which makes using and charging easier too, but pretty average performance, good enough for media

consumption similar performance wise I'd say to this Asus, this is just smaller and lighter being 11.6" screen.

Great for kids or a cheap take out handy computer. Even after no more Chrome updates, can still keep using it.

Reading the Amazon reviews, the many scam references are bit concerning, and keep in mind looks like a US plug.

  • +1

I mean, the spec is horrid, but is there anything actually worth buying at this price range? Atleast this is graded to be sturdy.

  • On a side note, since when does something make the front page with 10 votes? Must be a slow day….

  • +2

Buy this for someone you hate

    • +1

      Agreed. This is garbage tech.

  • +4

    Let’s be realistic- it’s $197 shipped

What more could you ask for?

    • I’m not sure anyone here is expecting more for $197, it’s simply that $197 isn’t enough money for a decent experience.

  • +3

I'm on my second chrome book.
Just an amazing device for the price. Use it all the time.

    • +3

Obviously not for you. But a young teenager or family on a budget who can use a cheap light laptop

easy to maintain and charge up on the go ( 2 X USB C ) can serve it's purpose well.

  • +1

This is what you buy for the kids schooling, after they break the shiny new Surface Pro or HP x2 Chromebook you bought them previously.

Reviews on Amazon suggest there is some sort of scam here

    Unit
    Arrive not as described?!?!

    • those reviews are from 2018. I couldnt find any recent reviews from 2021 or 2022

      • Price just lifted 244$

N3350 is a 5 year old CPU and Chromebook CX1100CN has auto update expiration date in June 2024, i.e. less than 2.5 year old update left. On the other hand, it might be possible to run CloudReady. My 8-year-old Acer Chromebook C720 is now running CloudReady with almost latest Chromium, and is still useful for browsing the web.

  • +2

Just an FYI you can install professional tools on these chromebooks via the Linux program.

There are many alternatives to the commonly used programs on Windows that work just as good.

Also as everything is going cloud based all you really need is a good internet connection.

EDIT: you can install steam through terminal as well as quake 1 and 2.

  • "Note that 100gb cloud storage expired on 31-1-22."

    The link says -

i only see this: "Offer from Google will expire by 1/31/2022" from the amazon site, so it thought it would be prudent to give people notice they may not be able to claim this offer.

      • I bought a different chromebook and the offer didn't work for me. I think it's for new Google One users only.

  • You will kill yourself once this freezes during important work or study.

I'd give this to my worst enemy.

    • +1

Why would it freeze? Even Windows rarely does that these days, ChromeOS even less.

But I doubt anyone buys this for "important work or study". More like high-school maths homework, or Netflix. It'd be better than using your phone.

      • +1

Netflix will 100% be more enjoyable on your phone.

    • +1

      Mine never freezes.
      Do you actually have one?

  • Is this good enough for my kid to play Roblox?

    • No.

  • +1

    Have been using this one
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/353009

For 4+ years as a presentation laptop for uni lectures.

    Fantastic never missed a beat.

When not in use for work it's great for web browsing (not too many open tabs) and email. Overall has been well worth it.

    • Exactly this. People laugh an scoff at the less than superior chromebook but they have no idea.

Been using one for 2 to 3 years now as a relief teaching no issues.
