    • sorry just edited.

  • no 4g back up, no thanks

    • Which one do you recommend with 4G backup?

    • +6

Use the USB port for a DIY 4G failover.

I hear this is a good router but I'd rather local stock over importing it.

    • Is this due to some bandwidth limitation for UK version?

      • +2

Nar is exactly the same thing with a different plug. Just gotta swap that or get a converter.

        • +1

Routers imported from the UK are not the same as AU stock. Apart from a different plug they have weaker Wi-Fi power and different Wi-Fi channels. Asus will not cover your warranty locally and you have to send back to Amazon UK.

Wait for a local deal if you are in no rush. AU stock has been much cheaper before.

@Twix: You can flash it with Aussie firmware if you like but really it's all the same these days and better to use myelin firmware anyway.

Never heard of the actual hardware being any different, which is what would affect signal strength. But happy to be proven wrong.

As for warranty yeah ASUS wouldn't cover it but Amazon has too.

            • @Narull: Merlin firmware is great. Flashing the firmware doesn't unlock the Wi-Fi restrictions. YMMV if it affects you or not.

            • +1

@Narull: How long is Amazon warranty though? Buying locally these are like 3 years warranty.

@Twix: For Asus routers especially the high-end ones, they are exactly the same and you can easily change the country in the WIFI setting to get the different transmission power levels.

I bought a AC-5300 from China and the default signal is weaker due to the Chinese regulations but it worked perfectly when switched to Aus.

            • @xjcs88: That's not what Asus told me.

              • +1

@Twix: Then they were wrong. I have one AC-5300 bought from China and I did test the signal when switching to Aus, much better than default setting(China).

              • +1

@Twix: With default setting I can only get around 30Mbps crossing 2 walls via 5Ghz band, and increased to nearly 230Mbps after switching to Aus.

Downside of this is need a international plug or a new power cable, upside is those are cheap as chips.

    • +3

      Chips are no longer cheap…

      • Fair point haha, but this is the AU version https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B089MQNW2C/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Pretty sure can get a new power cord or adaptor for less than the $70 you're saving getting the UK version (and a fair few chips too).

        • I've been looking for a good deal on one of these to match up with my RT-AX88u as an extender just to get some higher bandwidth… any one has any experience on that and if it works well? Was hoping for sub $399 as I paid about $384 for the AX88U

  • +1

So… anyone pulled the trigger yet?

    • +2

Not me… I'm waiting for a better deal or seeming as I've waited so long perhaps I should hang out for the 6E routers as I'm sure they are not far away with some notebooks already including support for it…

      • Wi-Fi 6E routers will be double the price of this.

        • +1

Then I would wait for 7F :-). The prices are getting ridiculous. My RT-AC68U is still fine.

        • +1

But I'm sure the price of these Wifi 6 routers will drop though…
