The 16GB model is terrible value.

    • +2

$350 for extra 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, and I don't think anything else.

      • +2

Couldn't you install 3rd party parts for less than $350? I guess you could get a 1TB SSD for maybe around $109 and maybe even get away with 16GB of RAM (2x8) for around $100?

        • +4

Exactly, plus at $1349 you could easily get a 16GB/512GB (or maybe even 1TB) SSD RTX 3060 laptop which are in another league of gaming performance

    • extra 8GB RAM plus 256GB ssd for extra $380???
      yes horrible!
380 could bring in an extra 8GB ram with 2TB easily. or goto 32 GB with 1TB low spec ssd

    • this is defs just one 8gig RAM stick, just pop it open and pop in your own second stick.

I've seen online reviews with issues regarding motherboard after a few months… How's Dell warranty system and experience?

  • Display panel kills the deal.

    • Agree

  • I looked at this model but ended up with a Vostro that has the better 300nit panel.

    Hdmi 2.1 output?

I bought an Inspiron 15 last year. Issues with CPU fan, mousepad doesn't click. Only 13 months that I have owned it. Will stay away from Dell laptops in future.

  • +1

Same. Bought an Inspiron and within 12 months mouse track pad stop working, keyboard stops working, laptop crashes completely.

The warranty and repair process was good. But still a pain in the arse over all.

I bought this one, ended up having to order the screwhole & screw for the second M.2 slot, Dell wanted US$99 + Delivery for them with the heatspreader.
I got them from Amazon for A$42 delivered but that ended up being a Chinese dropshipper and it took a full month to arrive. Between that and the needed SSD/memory upgrade for dual channel, this laptop cost A$1,120 which brought it closer to other brands which would have had 512gb/16GB to begin with.

If you consider the upgrades for the expensive screws, the RAM & the SSD (210GB is bad for games), you should consider the Intel NUC X15 these guys are selling for A$1,499 delivered. Full 130W 3060, +8GB RAM, +256GB, no need for proprietary Dell screw that costs way too much. This is more like $350-$400 difference.

    • I got the SSD bracket and heatsink for $20 delivered from Dell for my G7 17 2070.

  • I've got this lappy upgraded the ram and pretty much just use it attached to a USB C dock. Running a 32 monitor.

Works great I wouldn't call it a gaming laptop, but does the job.

Ssd wise I use a nas so storage is also no issue for me.

I have this exact version of the G15 and it works great. Few things to note.

There is no mechanism to wake on lane. And USB wake is not very reliable. This means you can't use a vertical stand for permeant desktop like use case.

Dell bloatware. I recommend doing a full wipe of the drive including all the little partitions dell has created and doing a fresh install.

The G button and performance mode is only available from internal keyboard. No soft option and can't do it from external USB keyboard. This means you will have to settle for balanced mode or loud fans permanent in G mode without accessing the internal keyboard.

The ram mine came with was crap, immediately upgraded to better x8 dual rank sticks.

The USB C display port is not connected to GPU so no NVIDIA Gsync if you have a compatible monitor.

Temps on mine never exceeded 80 degrees in the aforementioned vertical closed lid position. Playing CS go and tomb raider shadow. One is CPU heavy and the other is GPU heavy.

Plastic on the chassis is the best I have ever used. Looks great and it feels superb almost like a real marble.

Power management in windows is super limited in settings not allowing you to tweak anything.

Bios is barebones with not many options.

Also reflecting on the post above. No screw hole to mount ssd. I just jammed mine in and it works fine. But a more secure mechanism would have been better

  • I got the 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD version in November from Dell website for just under $1200 after cashback applied.

Overall I'm happy with it. Performance with 1080p gaming is good (Warzone, CS:GO). I haven't noticed the panel being bad (maybe I'm a philistine). I've used it with a USBC docking station to connect to my mouse/keyboard/Ethernet/HDMI monitor.

Trackpad isn't great for clicking (I connect a mouse). You need the massive power pack to charge it (won't charge through USB C). Plastic casing feels a little cheap to me but it's solid enough. Dell software can be annoying so I just uninstall it.

I didn't see much out there at this price point which competes.

    According to https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/gaming-and-games/g15-ryzen-e… is 1x8GB

Purchase a 2nd 8GB DIMM SODIMM and upgrade it yourself = profit

    • This is good news. Thank you. Do you have any idea why do I keep seeing sodimm instead of dimm?

      • Laptop ones apparently are sodimm, dimm are for desktop I guess.

        • +1

          Correct

DIMM is full size, SODIMM is halfish size (laptop, some NUCs, etc)

          I meant SODIMM, not DIMM

According to manual 3200Mhz DDR4 SODIMM is recommended, though in theory other speeds should work too. Recommended to match speeds with the existing stick though

There's some talk online that 1.2V is required (ie not 1.35V), personally I would run Speccy once it arrives and just match the specs of the existing stick as closely as possible.

          • @[Deactivated]: I'll take your advice. Thank you very much

@GuestShopper: If it turns out to be 2x4GB you can likely claim a bit back via eBay support because the MPN usually dictates the specific config (RAM, HDD, etc) AND model

(Basically just state mislead as an Australian consumer on basis of MPN and official advertisements elsewhere, consumer law applies etc etc)

Either way though, even if you need to buy 2x8GB and have a random unused 2x4GB, you're still better off than the other config for this deal

      • Laptop ones are all SODIMM, that was me shortening it sorry

        SODIMM = Laptop (halfish size)
        DIMM = Desktop (full size)

You'll need SODIMM (I've requested mods update my comment to avoid confusion)

    • a lot of these 8gig laptops always use one stick for cost, so no surprises there, now instead of paying Dell that extra $350 for another stick of ram, we will pop one in ourselves.

      • Have to check these days, it's kinda coin flippy what config is used. Would assume partly just clearing old 4GB sticks.

        • im suprised there even is any left in 2022.

          • @dbmitch: Lots of touch models still use 2x4GB, usually one soldered one SODIMM
