$10.50 Cashback on Any Prepaid Telstra SIM Kit @ Telstra via Shopback

512

A bit of a strange deal.

Shopback is offering $10.50 cashback on any prepaid plans via Telstra.

There is a $10 telstra sim which essentially gives you $0.50c.

I confirmed with Shopback via Facebook that the $10 sim card is eligible.

Edit: Here is screenshots of my covo with Shopback where they confirmed: https://imgur.com/a/4lt23pe
On the second screenshot, i asked if 'i will make 0.5c' and sent a screen shot of the $10 prepaid sim card. The rep said YES, correct

Edit 20/01: https://imgur.com/a/Zp9Skw5 Shopback confirmed to me it should be tracked within 2 days.

    Still too expensive for Telstra…

Even after I left them, they continued to harass me to pay a -ve bill every month.

    • -3

Interesting. I have found Telstra to be superior.

      • +4

I have found Telstra to be superior.

Yes, they are unsurpassable in incompetency and uselessness…

        • To me there all the same with each there own problems

Telstra is better in coverage then the other two main carriers, (Australia wise metro is close too all of them) though depends on location sometimes Optus or Vodafone might have better coverage, so location, location, location, Optus rules 5G speed in Melbourne, I've experienced speeds over 1000 Mbps
          https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/7454933490

Online chat wise Telstra is certainly the worst by far to the others, Telstra has stupid chat system we're they treat chat as one posting on a forum/Facebook help (same with Belong but ya don't pay an arm and a leg for their service as Telstra) and they can reply when they want, not a true chat talking to someone like Optus's online chat system, saying that both can have chat agents that have no idea about there services were you'll have to find another agent who does and spend hours just to solve a simple problem

Bla bla bla,.. both Telstra and Optus make mistakes (through chat etc) and deals become even better or have got stuff for free were I shouldn't have, both have great deals if one is lucky to find them, Vodafone as yet have had any experience with👍

Easier to get help over the phone during business hours,. usually we'll depends who the call goes too

My 2 cents rant lolz 🤣😝🤑

          • @Italkdigital: In my experience, Telstra has a lot more undocumented 'holes' in their coverage around Sydney. I'm glad my prepaid contact expired last week and i was able to switch to Vodafone, as they seem to have much more reliable coverage everywhere i go.

          • @Italkdigital: Haven't been on Vodafone for a while because of poor signal, but I found the Optus app to be very unreliable compared to Telstra. The few billing issues I have had with Telstra resulted in inflated credits on my account so all smiles.

    • Isn't this prepaid so they can't harass you as no credit check?

      • I didn't have prepaid with Telstra. I use Boost for my mobile phones.

  • JV they don't do bills anymore

    • +1

They still do bills however you prepay your minimum monthly plan and only get invoiced for any extras (subscriptions, premium calls, not included international ECT) but Telstra is ridiculous at invoicing for stuff you never used or subscribed and although they are usually pretty good at correcting the errors if you contact them right away good luck if you are one of those people who set up direct debit and only look closely at the invoices occasionally or when you notice a huge deduction.
But for prepaid thankfully that's not an issue.
Thanks OP might have a look and see if I can get a higher value Sim for free as it would be good to have a Telstra Sim in the rotation so I can eventually use up all the $80 belong Sims I got using up my Telstra Plus Points lol I was pretty happy with Telstra for the year I was with them on the JB $59 plan with $500 voucher (which I sold to subsidize the plan costs) but I think I'll stick with rotating Sims Belong/Telstra/Belong/Boost/Belong if they keep making it easy and offering discounted Sims. I gotta say Belong for me at least is as good as Telstra/Boost even though it's only the 4g wholesale network where as Aldi wasnt great for me (granted I haven't tried them in a couple years) but might change when I next upgrade my phone for 5g if the network improves enough to cover my Home indoors especially.
The fun and games of Sim swapping hey, gotta love it. Thanks again OP

      • +3

correcting the errors if you contact them right away

Which often takes hours and hours and getting passed around to numerous people…

  • +3

Probably a good way of testing if Telstra actually works where you need it.

    • 4G only, you can't test on their 5G network with this sim

      • you can't test on their 5G network with this sim

        why not?

        • Only the most "expensive" prepaid plans have 5G connectivity.

          • @bobokingdom: Why? Don't they have enough capacity on the 5G spectrum?

            • @jv: Because they can charge for it and people will pay for it.

Which is great for Telstra because the more people who use 5G the better is is for Telstra as they need less spectrum overall.

              • @spaceflight:

Because they can charge for it and people will pay for it.

That applies to 4G too though…

                • @jv: They don't restrict or charge a premium to use 4G, it's available on all their plans.

                  • @spaceflight: So why not have 5G on all their plans for phones that support it?

                    • @jv: Because they can charge for it and people will pay for it.

They are a business so if they can make extra profit they will.

                      • @spaceflight:

Because they can charge for it and people will pay for it.

I know that, but it makes no sense that they choose to limit the number of customers they get.

                            • @jv: Are they limiting the number of customers they get?

People that want 5G with Telstra will pay a premium for it.
People what want Telstra will go to Telstra.

They aren't really limiting their customer base, they're just extracting more profit from it and creating a new market.

If Telstra didn't have enough spectrum then it wouldn't make sense to restrict access to 5G as it would impact their service quality.
If they have enough 3G/4G spectrum to meet their needs then why not sell a premium connectivity option?

          • @bobokingdom: I have Telstra 5G.. it’s not worth it.

            • @wikiwiki: Optus 5G is worth it if I lived 10 minutes down the road from my place were speeds are over 1000 Mbps, and in the North/West of Melbourne corridor from Keilor down to Sunshine is all almost 5G coverage

              My Speedtest result! https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/7454933490

But sucks were I live two towers away from 5G so only 4G here with average speeds of 15 Mbps

And I've been waiting patiently for 5G to happen in my area supposedly Telstra 5G is already here, only thing that's stopped me to jumping to a Telstra 5G plan is my great Optus Postpaid plan with lots of extras

              • @Italkdigital: That's great and all but I've got wifi at home. Where I really need 5g is on my train home where signal is patchy and latency is significant to the point where I can't even use WhatsApp . They need to understand that lol otherwise nobody will really have a "need" for 5g

              • @Italkdigital: I’m the same.
4G and 5G at home is 4mbps but thankfully I have wifi.
Down the road at Bunnings my 4G is over 200 mbps but that’s not helpful.
I also have wifi at work so the only time I need it is the commute in between.
                Can’t say I really need 5G speeds.

      • you can't test on their 5G network with this sim

        This can’t be true! Source?

        • Telstra website, only $60 prepaid plan has access to 5G network

          • @T-man: Shady marketing! Even if they want to promote it a premium feature you'd think they would offer it on the $40 Sim (1 level up from what I'd assume is the most popular $30 pack) Telstra is so greedy!
I wonder if Optus is doing the same or are they happy to give 5g to anyone going directly to the 'Optus' brand?

            • @Clarky77: Telstra $60 sim pack is 5G capable and 65GB/28 day exp. only $49.50 after cb if you want to test out 5G.

              • +1

@ozhunter68: Thanks, I had Telstra 5g all last year (free inclusion with $59 JB plan) but never used it because I'm still rocking my S10+ which just got upgraded to Android 12 so I'll be keeping it at least another year and maybe longer if it gets 13 (I don't think it will)
So hopefully 5g will have much better coverage in my area (inner western suburbs of Melbourne) by the start of next year.
TBH if 4g is working well it's more than enough for me & as more people move to 5g I'm hoping it'll just get better unless the telcos start manipulating speeds to promote people moving over to 5g.
$40 Sim which is on sale for $20 plus the $10.50 cashback with 4g will do the job if I get confirmation the cashback will be paid but I'm still waiting to hear back. Fingers Xd

                • @Clarky77: Agree with all your points. Samsung Galaxy 10/+ O.S. updates will stop at Android 13.

Most people would be happy with 3G/4G if it was improved in some areas, closing the gaps

in black spots more and more bandwidth too in certain areas. 5G is sold to the consumer as we

pay for a lot of the infastructure etc., but is mainly for industry, teaching, medical, automated

self driving transport, drones etc. Agree that it's possible telco's could manipulate 3G/4G/4GX

speeds/bandwidth in order to move people to 5G, let's hope not, but……..

I also held off ordering Any Prepaid Telstra Sim untill CB is confirmed, especially comming from

SopBack. Need one Telstra Prepaid Sim for travelling/test network ( $30/$40 Sim pack for 28

day use), but not in hurry and safer to get for $15 currently from Aust Post or supermarket.

          • @T-man:

Telstra website, only $60 prepaid plan has access to 5G network

Thanks, sounds crazy by Telstra but its Telstra!

    @ wetwork
For sure or if in a rush grab the $2 sim and $5 recharge from Coles and a few other places…

  • +6

"after SB" is a price I am not willing to risk

    • +1

Will wait for CR to do the same :)

    • +1

No taking the risk of SB not being activated. What if ScoMo cancels my SB?

    • +2

I don't treat SB discounts into the equation anymore, just assume they won't pay as advertised and consider it a possible bonus.

Their interface is designed to make it difficult to keep track of previous purchases.

  • +6

FYI be careful I've got a feeling this isn't eligible for cashback! Telstra calls their plans when you aren't on a contract "prepaid plans" and I think that's what they mean when talking about this $10.50 cashback & if you look in the terms it specifically says prepaid aren't eligible.
I think the person OP chatted with on Facebook might have been mistaken but hopefully I'm wrong. I've emailed them and hopefully I'll get a reply before 26/1 as the $40 Sims are on special for $20 so it would be great to grab one of those for $9.50 it's only 42GB data but good for rotation and I'm sure it's enough for many.
I'll keep you posted if I get an update.
    Cheers :)

Thats a link to my screenshot.

If anything goes wrong, ill get the ACCC on their ass

      • +2

        Can't be enforced

If Telstra doesn't pay SB there's nothing you can do

SB rejects cashbacks all the time

Now I don't think genuinely SB pockets the money which you then got a case

But if you manage to ACCC their ass and win, you'll be the first

  • Who are the intended customers for these things? If you're not on a monthly plan I imagine you'd be on a 365 day one which can be had for $120 and more monthly data than 2GB. Is this for international travellers?

    • +1

A lot of people like myself, do not have home broadband/NBN and often use prepaid mobile sims mainly for data in

a portable wifi modem or phone hotspot. Others who have dual sim phones, or use more than one phone could also

use these. Then there are people who want to test out a network in particular area and prefer to get 7/28 day trial

before commiting to a 12 month sim, or people who just currently can't afford to spend more money. Then there

would be parents with kids who have just started using mobile and testing their use out also etc. etc.

  • +1

They must get a decent amount of people who need a cheap Sim in a pinch? & I'm sure they get a reasonable % who end up recharging and moving on to one of those plans you speak of. I think they were looking to stop people being able to activate $2 Sims without recharging first so this is a way to make a few $s from people who just want the cheapest Sim they can get for Sim swapping but that's just a guess.

    • Good calculated and thought out guess there. Some more guesses from myself in above comment lol.

  • Is it even a bargain if you are getting paid?

  • +1

$10 plan is 7 day expiry

Ozbargain now has a new feature

Thanks for the negative votes everyone!
It's great to see that me trying to help make sure that scrimshaws message was seen is unappreciated by the community.
          Glad I could help.

      Hey,
Sorry for the delay, I was just getting confirmation from the team.

Prepaid products are eligible, the T&C's/Notes have been updated to reflect this now.
      Sorry for any confusion caused!

      • Thanks. I've updated the deal with new TC's.

      • Thanks. Another question: do you need to activate the sim within a certain period in order to have the cashback approved as well?

      • +2

Thankyou! I sent an email enquiry but actually requested they reach out to you/SB OzB rep as well because many people were asking :)
Looks like I'm gonna grab myself a $40 Sim discounted to $20 with $10.50 cashback making it $9.50 now that's a bargain ;p

  • +1

9.50 After sb for a $40 prepaid Telstra Sim is a good deal
the supermarkets never have Telstra less than half price.

    • Sorry so it costs $9.50 your saying for the $40 Telstra sim?

What included in the $40 sim?

      • Probably an existing discount for the $40 pack

        • And that's presuming the CB comes through.

  • +2

Strange in their rates it says 10. 50 prepaid plans but in the terms and do’s and don’ts it excludes prepaid plans

    can anyone confirm ?

    • I noticed the same

  • +1

Telstra have the $40 prepaid Sim for $20 online take 10.50 is 9. 50
but there’s A lot of discrepancies on ShopBack whether cashback is allowed on prepaid Sims

  • Good luck if you need help from their non-existent call centre. I ended up throwing away my sim.

  • +5

too risky. Sometimes even ShopBack rep confirm something, it still does not work with SB :) so u will be waste more time to chat to them

  • +1

And confirming email from shopback tracking for your $10.50?

      Thanks for confirming!!

      • I bought 40 bucks one and just received their confirmation email~~~

        • Didn’t get any tracking confirmation yet. 9 hours ago now!

    • Any changes?

      • Received right now

  • Free burner phone if it works

    • $10 for 2GB for 7 days… LOL

      • +2

Plus 6 months free receiving calls 👍😁

  • Does Telstra have any loyalty/reward system like Optus Subhub that I can get into with this free sim?

    • +1

Telstra does have a loyalty program different from Optus Subhub, as Optus Subhud is more of adding all your streaming services in the one place, Telstra has a points system called Telstra Plus Rewards where you can use your points to buy things like how flybuys works but products they list in their Telstra Plus Rewards store (which sometimes has heavily discounted items,. points wise), they do also have offers like try Netflix/Foxtel for a month at one point they had there Binge service free to try for six months, you earn points from how much you spend/pay on there services, I think even buying mobiles on a plan but not outright, of course includes any internet or home phone services one pays for

To start off instal My Telstra App from the mobile app store,. Android here,..
      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.telstra.mo…

Once you activate your Telstra simcard you can make a Telstra account to use for above app, anyway from the above Telstra app there's a shop button tab right/bottom which basically takes you to below site
      https://checkout.telstra.com.au/consumer/rewards?login=true

  • Heres a reconfirmation from shopback that i should be eligible and it should be tracked within 2 days: https://imgur.com/a/Zp9Skw5

Ok $40 Sim ordered, I'll keep you updated re tracking and withdrawable status as it updates
FYI for people who need the Telstra network but still do the Sim Swap thing Boost is offering 45gb on their $30 Sims atm which are discounted to $10 or if that's not enough Coles have the $40 Sims with 60GB discounted to $15 at least they did but there's a possibility the offer ended on Tuesday? Worth a look if you just doing shopping anyway though.
Good Luck :) and please if anyone sees bargains on Boost/Telstra/Belong Sims esp on the higher value ones with 60gb+ preferably 80gb+ please post em up, I get super annoyed with myself when I have to spend any more than about $15-$20 for 80GB Telstra network access and really $15 is better ;D

    • +1

Order just tracked so took about 4h 30 minutes for me!

    • Be careful if you not switching telcos.

Telstra to Telstra reseller can take longer than expected.

      • That's definitely an issue moving from Boost to Telstra or Vice Versa but in my experience if you use Belong or WWs in-between it works pretty quickly (usually under 30 minutes but at most 3hours) I'm not sure about ALDImobile as I haven't used them in over 5 years and it was a pain to meet their ID requirements to port out back then (I don't have a driver's licence or passport and they wanted me to send them a photo) of course it's always better to do transfers/ports during business hours (8-8 weekdays 9-3 Saturdays unless it's changed recently)

        • In my experience it's best to switch between network telcos.

If on Telstra direct or reseller today, port to a Vodafone or Optus direct/ reseller.

Usually ports within 30mins or less during business porting hours.

It ends up being about 14x starter packs per year. (28days with some… I Port out a few days earlier to ensure business day)

        • Just did an Aldi to Boost port last week and no probs only took 30 mins.

Happy with that as it was a 12 month sim and came of a Aldi $15 per month I kept

going for over a year as got sick of porting for years.

          • @ozhunter68: I just moved from Belong to Telstra and it took less than 10 minutes. Looks like the problems they used to have aren't as much of an issue these days.
Having said that please be careful doing Telstra-Boost & Boost-Telstra. Generally Boost will send you out a special Sim but these days with the problems getting through to customer service and even when you do they are inexperienced I wouldn't even try. Use an intermediary Sim instead. But Telstra-Belong, Belong-Telstra, WWs Mobile-Boost I've tried myself over the last year and all were quick(under 1hr and mostly under 20 minutes) & hassle free.
            Good Luck

  • Still not tracked after 2 days…

    • told you :( happen to me a few times already

You can try to submit a missing cashback claim but no hopes up

      • I did… well they should honor it…

        • Did you make the purchase through the mobile app? I've seriously never had a purchase not track since they added a browser in the SB app, I used to have issues through Chrome browser even when I cleared cookies ect ect but not even once since then although some have taken a few days and I'm up to about $2000 in lifetime rebates now mostly from fairly small transactions although there have been a couple of bigger ones.

  • I got an email from shopback regarding this:

Thanks for your inquiry, sincere apologies for your less than perfect experience with ShopBack.

At the moment, our team is still validating this transaction with our merchant partner. We will do our best to update your Cashback status by the date set on your Cashback description.

You will receive an email from our team once the investigation is completed.

Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do for you in the meantime. Hope this helps and have a nice day :)
