Seems like a good price for this 32GB laptop RAM module. Appears to hover around $269 elsewhere. Two of these might be a good upgrade to 64 GB for those buying the Lenovo Legion 7i.

Thanks. I saw that the other day but felt it was too long a wait for delivery from the US for my needs. BTW, do you know if G.Skill is better than Crucial?
The brand of RAM doesn't really make that much difference. There's only a few companies that actually manufacture the RAM chips, but lots of companies that brand them up and sell them, if that makes sense.
Crucial is the consumer brand of Micron, who actually manufacture the chips themselves, so Crucial memory should exclusively use Micron chips. G.Skill is independent and could potentially use chips from a variety of manufacturers but I think they use a lot of Hynix and Samsung chips.
For laptops especially, there's not a lot of difference between them all. The vast majority of SO-DIMMs operate at the JEDEC spec for speed and timings (for 3200 MT/s that would be CL 22).
Which is a better option?
The above or 2x32GB CT32G4SFD832A sticks (64GB total) from shopping-express for $342.42 with the PJAN22 discount code on eBay?
Thinking of putting 64GB in a Legion7i.
@JohnF888: The kit linked above has the same model number as the one you've quoted, so they're identical. In that case - whichever is cheaper.
x8 or x16?
1R or 2R?
the x8 vs x16 single/double rank problem only happens with 8gb sticks.
All 16gb and above are single ranked only.
All 16gb and above are single ranked only.
you mean x8?
@CVonC: Yes. This is why the only surefire way to get the ‘faster’ ram is to buy 16gb or above kits. No more x8 8gb ram are being manufactured anymore.
@Brrrrt: Yeah but you saying all 16gb and above are single ranked only is incorrect.
16gb and above can indeed be dual ranked.
@CVonC: As far as I am aware, at least within laptop sodimms, no. All 16gb and above kits are faster single rank rams. Care to point out where you found 16gb dual rank sodimm?
@Brrrrt: Well I have 2x32gb 2rx8 crucial vengeance running on my Nitro 5. Do you need me to provide a CPU-Z screenie?
Also dual rank is faster than single rank.
@CVonC: my bad, my brain wasnt functioning when i woke up and i somehow confused dual rank/single rank against x8/x16.
I am still correct, x8 ram are faster and all 16gb and above sticks only have x8/dual rank
its only 8gb sticks that have the dual/single rank problem
you can stop negging me on every comment now :(
all 16gb and above sticks only have x8/dual rank
Again that's incorrect, a lot of 16gb sticks are still single rank man.
They're dual-rank modules.
Thaiphoon Burner suggests they're 2Rx8.
Two of these might be a good upgrade to 64 GB for those buying the Lenovo Legion 7i.
I assume that's just the maximum RAM it comes with from Lenovo
Watch this.
yeah no I'm not gonna watch a 12 minute video lol at least give a timestamp c'mon!
The link to the RAM he used to upgrade his machine is in the video description. I personally ordered the one in this post. We'll see once it arrives.
Dumb question. My laptop has 8gb soldered and 1 free slot. That is a 8gb slot that I want to replace with this.
Is it bad?
I'm guessing you have a Asus ROG gaming laptop with 8 GB soldered + 8 GB SODIMM slot. You can upgrade it with a 32 GB SODIMM without any issues, but you'll lose some performance especially in gaming due to differences in single vs dual channel memory configurations. Unless you need 40 GB Ram for a certain application it would be better to stick with 16 GB to preserve gaming performance.
Here's a great video that explains the differences with this exact setup.
its weird the listing says single rank but it has the same product code as https://www.mwave.com.au/product/crucial-32gb-1x-32gb-ddr4-3…
Interesting. I found it hard to find detailed info on RAM in general… For example is this RAM x8 or x16? My understanding is that this is more important than rank. Or maybe both are important, not sure.
fyi, i bought 2 of these: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/crucial-16gb-1x-16gb-ddr4-3…
if you see the product code is nearly the same as the one listed in Amazon listing…
16GB - CT16G4SFD832A (the one i bought and confirmed on CPU-Z that it is indeed dual ranked)
32GB - CT32G4SFD832A (Amazon lists this as Single Rank, MWave mentions Single Rank and Dual Rank inconsistently in the description)I guess with Amazon you can buy and return if you found that this is not dual-ranked…
Cheaper on eBay: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Crucial-16GB-32GB-SODIMM-RAM-DDR…
2 x 16gb sticks at $100 ea = $200 - 22% eBay plus = $156Unless you really need the single stick. I guess 4 x 8gb would be even cheaper….
We are talking this is for people who want 64GB in total. In other words you'd always buy two of these for Dual Channel.
It got delivered today. Easy-peasy installation on my Legion 7. Still not sure whether modules are x8 or x16.
While not as cheap as it has been in the past, for those looking for a 64GB upgrade kit, I purchased this 2x32GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4-3200 kit in October last year for around $310. It's currently $327.47, plus free shipping with Prime.
I used this to upgrade from the 1x16GB config my Infinity W5 laptop came with.
