Credit to Indecisive1 for his comments on my Legion 7 AMD deal

By my calculations this is $2294.40 delivered if the Cashrewards 14% cashback applies

Discount is heavy because it has Windows 10 pre-installed not Windows 11.
The exact same build but with Windows 11 pre-installed is more than $500 more.
The upgrade to Windows 11 once you have the laptop is free and pretty painless so I have pulled the trigger on this deal.

$61 of Lenovo rewards too!

    Sweet… sugar…candyman…

I like my candy, but also my chicken.

I prefer wings and marylands - breast not so much….

  • I don’t see the code listed on cash rewards

    Special Terms
Cashback is ineligible when using codes not listed on Cashrewards

    • +1

If the code is auto generated on the site then CR will honour it. See posts by TAon historical lenovo deals. This feels like a record beating price especially when it's eligible for CB I.e. Not an education store offer.

    • You will find that codes generated from Lenovo is eligible for cashback from Cashrewards.
      https://www.cashrewards.com.au/lenovo

"Cashback is however eligible on codes generated by Lenovo on its website, even though they may not be listed on Cashrewards, provided last click before purchase is from Cashrewards."

      • Thx! Didn’t know this

  • -1

Even @ $2629 this is a great price. Most people paid around the same for L5P!

  • Starting at 2.5kgs - ouch. Its heavy

    • +1

Save you money from going to gym….XD

  • definitely very good deal for in-stock units. get in quick as seems like not many left.

  • Ok I pulled the trigger.

I originally wanted the AMD version, but at this price I'll take 16GB RAM instead of 32GB - plus the Intel unit has a much, much faster SSD.

    • Did you get the cashback on Cashrewards?

      • It is tracking, but that doesn't mean much. Won't know for sure for about 90 days.

        • Was your potential cash back calculation correct at $334.60? If so, it's a massive cash back and makes it such a great deal for a Legion 7. You can use it on upgrading the memory to 32GB like on the Ryzen model.

My cash back from my Legion 5i purchase in October got approved.

    • You can upgrade ram later?

any school students in here convincing mum and dad guardian/guardians this is needed for school?

    • edit: updated because 2022
    • -1

Haha is ld like to think we're not so far gone as Americans that the phrase "mum and dad" is still acceptable here.

Just take up a video editing class and you can say the GPU makes it faster!

    • +1

I just got accepted to a free UTAS course so for me it's actually:

any school students in here convincing mum and dad guardian/guardians themselves this is needed for school?

  • How much battery life would you get if you just used this for normal office work/web browsing?

  • duh why 16" not 17.30" is this new standard panel ? weird i thought 15.6 then 17.3 are the common?

    • This 16" panel is better than 95% of laptop displays.

It has G-sync, 500 nits brightness, displays 100% sRGB and can run at 165hz.

It makes the panels on your average Dell or ASUS gaming laptop look like utter crap.

    • The 16” is usually in the same form factor as the 15.6, just reduced bezel size and more screen.

      • ah i see.. oh well that 1.3" is actually useful (comparing with the normal 17.3"

  • +1

Why now???!! Why tempt me right before the release of the new gen. So tempting

    • From what I have read, the 12th gen Intel CPU's are far faster and cooler than their 11th gen equivalents.

However the AMD 6xxx series have only marginal CPU speed increases.

Both feature improved onboard graphics, but that doesn't matter much if you are buying a laptop with a 3070 in it…

    • The ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 7 will be shipping in March 2022 with a starting price of US$1,749 hope it's just another 2 months away…

  • Hello guys..

What do u think of this one?
Wanted to stick with a budget of arounf 1.5k

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5…

With CR, it brings the price down to around $1590..

    • +1

Very solid CPU and outstanding display.

The GPU isn't so strong if you want to do a lot of gaming.

I understand though that budget constraints mean compromises have to be made somewhere.

The display is going to be A LOT better than most displays on similarly priced 15" laptops from other vendors….

      • Thanks for the input mate..

    • +1

You might end up spending abit more to upgrade the storage

    • +1

I bought this laptop about a month ago for 1720(including cashback). This would be historical low with cashback.
I needed a laptop with big HDR screen(16") and good performance for development purposes and running VMs. This satisfies the purpose. Plus build quality is very good. Only shortcomings I can think of is no Card reader(Easily remedied by buying an external card reader).
I'm not a gamer(not even a casual one) so cannot comment on the graphics card performance

      • Ok, grabbed one mate..
        Thanks for the feedback.

  • +1

Are we likely to see better deals over the next few months? Loooking to grab something for gaming/ video editing

    • +2

The ticket prices yes will come down for the now obsolete Intel 11th gen/AMD 5xxx series

However whether or not cashrewards and promo codes will add up to as much savings at those times isn't so certain.

With BACK2SCHOOL and 14% cashrewards this is a pretty sweet deal right now. Plus I like delivery in a few days rather than 2 months….

The discount is so high because they already built these units and they have Windows 10 installed.
Happy to do my own free upgrade to Windows 11 on receipt of the laptop to bank around $500 in savings….

      • Thanks for the info. I think you've talked me into it…. haha

        • +1

I wouldn't ponder too long - "a few left" normally means less than 20.

Some people paid $3749 less 20% on EBAY in the last few weeks for the same build
          https://www.ebay.com.au/bin/purchaseHistory?item=40316699101…

I guess with EBAY Plus they could return it….

          • @TheCandyMan2020: Are your reward points linked to your account? I'd be interested in an extra $61 off ;)
            Cheers

            • +1

@shap08: You have to register for Lenovo Rewards before purchasing

The rewards will take a week or so after delivery to be credited.

They can be used for future purchases from Lenovo.com.au (edu or normal stores).

          • @TheCandyMan2020: Hint: Lenovo has price protection which I successfully tested today.

            • @findingbargains: Can you please shed more light on their price protection programme? I haven't heard of it before.

              • @Guybrush57:

3.5) If the price of a Lenovo Product or Service as advertised by Lenovo (excluding items on clearance) is reduced after purchase, you may contact Lenovo on 13 LENOVO / 13 536686 (option 3) to request for a refund of the reduction within 7 calendar days of delivery of the Product or Service.

                https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/legal/New-Products-and-Warranty…

                • @CodeXD: This. I bought on their ebay store over the weekend at higher price. They refunded me almost $400 difference.

Now if they could only match the warranty upgrade pricing to their online store when buying alongside a new laptop, rather than overcharging when you try to upgrade after receiving the laptop (when you have no bargaining power left). Price is pretty much double! I hate it when companies do that.

For those of you buying and wanting to upgrade the RAM yourselves I have found these deals:

    32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHZ $175.50 with EBAY Plus
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334156596120

    64GB (2x32GB) 3200MHZ $342.42 with EBAY Plus
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334195101661

I probably only need 32gb but tempted to do 64gb

    • I'm interested in buying and upgrading myself.
It says "Up to 32GB DDR4-3200 offering" in the spec .pdf from Lenovo.
Does that mean they only sell with up to 32GB?
Or is there a hardware limit to only 32GB? I'm interested in potentially putting 64GB in.
A link to the .pdf is below.
      https://psrefstuff.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Legion/Lenovo_…

      • You can. There is a video on youtube from TallyHo reviewer.

      • I have seen a lot of comments and reviews saying 64gb (2 x 32gb) works.

I havent received mine yet, but am 99% sure 64gb will be OK

    • 32 is only needed for video editing, and overkill for gaming, 64 is a total overkill

I have 32gb in mine, and I never reach half of it used

as an alternative, $1999 for a reference Intel X15 with same CPU and full power 3070 and FHD 240hz panel for smoother FPS

Windows, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD included. thunderbolt 4,Gen4 NVMe slot (1 of 2), alloy build, mechanical keyboard. 94WH huge battery.

I got one and it's fantastic. no cashback required for this price.

    • G-Sync?

      • nope I think

        • +1

          So

          Kraken pros:
          * cheaper
          * 2 year warranty vs 1 year on the Lenovo
          * 5W TGP more on the 3070
          * 94W battery
          * 240hz screen (potentially without G-Sync)

          Lenovo pros:
          * known brand, arguably better for resale
          * $61 Lenovo rewards
          * better screen (500 nit, WQXGA, G-Sync)
          * demonstrated best in class cooling
          * on site service included in the 1 year premium support vs assumably back to base for the Kraken

The Kraken is excellent bang for buck, but if the screen really doesn't support G-Sync it seems a little pointless to do a 240hz panel.
Bearing mind too the Kraken is a full HD panel vs WQXGA on the Lenovo. Which resolution you prefer is up to you. There is no doubt the cost of producing the WQXGA panel is considerably more than the full HD panel. If you mainly use an external monitor or TV, you probably don't care much about the panel on the laptop.

There isn't a lot of formal review information around about the Kraken so it's hard to compare directly except for on raw config stats.

I do know that the Legion 7 has received excellent reviews and is considered widely as one of the best laptops in 2021.

For my needs I am happy with paying the extra $300 after cashback for the Legion

          • @TheCandyMan2020: yep, just giving an alternative. I prefer smoother panels and FHD in this form factor, I wouldn't have bought a QHD panel even if it were cheaper.

what's the benefit of G-Sync again? I haven't seen any tearing or anything like that. on an old habit I run games at exact divisors of the frequency (120, 80, 60, 48 for 240Hz) and 165 just confuses me as there's less useful framerates available

also Intel (that's what the producer of X15 officially is) is a well known brand alright haha

X15 is barebones, BPC are just supplying W10 license, SSD, and RAM

            • @shabaka: Well at 1080P you should be able to achieve some pretty high frame rates, however I'd be surprised if you hit 240 FPS in AAA titles.

If you don't, and your screen is set at 240hz with no Gsync, you may well experience screen tearing. Say in Apex Legends, turn quickly and see what happens. If your FPS is say 150 frames and your refresh rate is 240hz then tearing would be expected.

If you set your refresh rate lower for AAA games, that means you are changing your refresh rate every time you game?

It seems the X15 models sold by BPC, JW and others all have different panels, SSD and RAM. Unless they specifically tell you which ones they are using, it's quite the lottery.

              • @TheCandyMan2020: no, I leave the screen at 240hz at all times

I just limit frame rate within the game or using GeForce Experience. for example I limit Mordhau to 80 fps, HL2 to 120 fps, Overwatch to 120 fps

this means that screen has exactly 2 or 3 frames to spare between GPU spits out another frame.

I had g-sync on my previous laptop (razer blade 17, with 300hz panel) and I notice no difference in smoothness moving to X15

  • Did cashrewards track immediately for you?

    • +1

      25mins maybe?

      • +1

yeah about 30 mins for me

        • Pulled a trigger around 4pm. 5 hrs later, still no notification. Grrrr

  • How does this laptop compare to Legion Slim 7 Gen 6 15" AMD with RTX3060? I already ordered the Slim one yesterday through Cashrewards for $2464. Wondering if I should cancel that and order this instead.

I will be using it 50/50 for wfh and gaming.

    • Well this has a 3070 and is cheaper.

The AMD CPU (assumably 5800H) is better for battery life and heat, but it is slightly slower in most applications.

I personally would cancel and order this instead.

    • If you don't need the portability of Legion Slim 7, then yes, Lenovo Legion 7i is the better option.

Slim 7 weights in at 1.9kg compared to 2.5kg on Legion 7i.

Slim 7 will also have better battery but unlikely you'll be on battery wfh or gaming.

  • hmm so this intel and vs the amd https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/678290

intel $2294.40 after cashback - 16GB ram - slight faster when on wall
amd $2699.80 after cashback - 32GB ram - better battery
damn why $400 more….. i wish i can downgrade the amd to 16gb, and downgrade 1TB to 500GB drive…. oh well

    • adding that the AMD doesnt have thunderbolt 4.. . (because AMD)

  • so jealous of those getting this - had to bleed through the nose to get AMD + 3070 version few months ago :D

  • damn.. just pulled the trigger.. hope i don't regret buying this. I "needed" a new machine as mine's a pretty old i5 6th gen + gtx 980….

    • When was your 6th gen i5 980 released?

      • i5-6500 Launch Date Q3'15
        Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 G1 Gaming 4GB - Nov 2014

But I bought them on 17/10/15.

        Why do you ask ?

        • Thanks mate, I had a 860M laptop, bought in Jun 2015.
Just want to see roughly how long we consider to upgrade, especially you have a then top of the range 980.
I think it helps to work out a reasonable budget for new purchases.

    • huh i just google the comparison between gtx 980 and my 1050 ti, surprised me that 980 is older but way way better ?
learn something about the naming scheme, last two digit means a lot…..

      • Yep GTX 980 was an absolutely beast back in the day.

        • I think the 980 is fine. The issue is with my CPU which is bottleneck-ing my performance. Even for CSGO I had to set to low/very low settings.

I don't think it'd be worth to upgrade motherboard/cpu as that's like $4-500. Might as well buy a new one.

      • 980 might have similar performance to 1070…
My rule of thumb estimation is that, first digit goes up, second digit goes down.

  • Damn :( would've gotten this if it was possible to swap the power brick out to the 230W power adapter. the 300W adapter is way too heavy. Heard that the Lighting for the Icue software drains the battery like crazy compared to the LL5P tho.

    • There is an easy fix for the iCue battery drain problem - disable all Corsair Windows services. Also, if it helps, my understanding is that the Lenovo 230W "slim" charger is adequate for Legion 7i with the 3070 GPU (may not be for the 3080). Do some googling. If so, you could always by that one as a spare one.

how's this one for $1599 before cash back and after code, if it tracks !!!

  • Bought one!
    Thanks OP!

  • Anyone know what cooling is like in this laptop?
I've found most med-high power laptops suffer thermal throttling so am wary (but tempted) of this deal.
If it doesn't suffer thermal problems at 100% load, I'm in.
