  • Which is a better watch (for the price bracket)?

Also it's probably been asked a million times on here but, what is a budget watch that's well made, more classic look s/s band 50's style( face like in the top image on this page)

Not sure that made sense I'm exhausted from work…

    • +9

I was just looking at them. I'd go with the BJ6520-15A for $149.00. With an eco-drive, sapphire crystal and super titanium casing and simple clean look, will be hard to beat at this price point.

      • Agree, this is a great bargain. Watch the YouTube to get a real impression of the watch (the pics don’t do it justice).

      • +1. I don't need another watch, or even another Eco Drive, but this is a tempting offer.

        • same thoughts, I was thinking of getting this as a present for my dad but wasn't sure what he was wearing

      • -1

I don’t like the sundial look and it doesn’t show date

    • The Timex Marlin with leather band is the classic working man's watch design.

    • Seiko, Citizen, Casio or Orient are great at this range. There's an evident drop in quality from watches $500+ (eg. Tissot), but they're fantastic compared to the cheap as chips Daniel Wellington's etc..

  • +2

If only the super titanium sapphire had a date indicator…. such a great price though

    • +1

Such a pretty watch face and agree about the date
what are these realistically usually sold for as very tempted before they sell out?

      • my gut feel is this watch will generally be priced around the $200-250 mark on sale. Don't take my word for it though, only basing this off my searches of citizen watches when I purchased my last watch 3 yrs ago. I would pay (~$200) for it, I'd look for a watch with more features at ~$250 otherwise. You may be able to get it around $150 from less trustworthy sellers on sale (e.g. creationwatches) if you look hard enough and take the risk

        • even now, creation watches has it for 220+tax, so I think this price is pretty insane if you're looking for one, my first watch was a citizen automatic titanium for $250, but nothing is available at that price anymore in titanium (although starbuy did have some in 2020). Would highly reccomend!

@Aileri: Just couldn't resist that gorgeous face any longer, fell in love like a teenager again.

            • +1

@alidli: Good choice, glad you like it!

      • google cache shows they were $235 on 30 december 2021

    • +1

absolutely agree, insane price for something so clean and durable

    • I had something similar to this about 19 years ago with a brushed titanium look. Definitely nice, light and durable and at this price, an absolute bargain.

    • Most of the eco drives aren't eternal calendar, so the date indicators require monthly adjusting. Sapphire glass is rare on an eco drive.

I just don't like the Roman numerals.

    • Eh, the thing that stops it from being an instant buy, is the fact that I hate low contrast faces.
Silver on white? Eh… I don't want to search for the hands every time I look at my watch.

My advice is never to buy a watch where you can't instantly see the numbers/hands on the dial on first glance - the extra 5-10 every time will make you look dumb.

FYI @JustHereForDeals saw your comment here. The AT0200-13A is $169.00 again.

    • +1

It's all good, already bought it from Starbuy after the promotion. Loving the watch so I can't complain!

  • I walked past Angus & Coote today and nearly every Seiko was 1/2 price.

  • Thanks WatchNerd. I have been looking for a dress watch with sapphire crystal and leather band so this one with all those plus super titanium case is hard to resist. One thing to note, Starbuy lists it at 41mm diameter but the Citizen websites list it at 39mm. I prefer the former but I think I will get the latter.

already have the blue variant of the CA7040. i need the black one because…reasons.

    • +1

Duh! to go with your black socks of course

      • +1

        and my black humour..

  • Kind of wish there was a more premium watch in the $1000 price range on sale.

  • Can you get replacement straps for these? Looking to get a dark leather strap

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

      To expand, on "yes"

They both use standard band widths. You can buy a springbar tool and do it yourself. Bergon is generally what is recommended, though even a cheap tool will be fine for the occasional strap change.

I've used Holbens Fine Watch Bands before as they sell decent straps, though, sadly they no longer ship to Australia. It's worth checking out one of the watch forums for recommendations. I haven't been too impressed with the offerings Australian sellers.

  • I would buy this if it had numbers or bars as markers. I don't like the roman numerals

  • +1

The BJ6520-15A is a steal with the sapphire face and titanium case. The blue and black fliegers are also great for the price, with what seem like raised numerals.

    • +1

they aren't raised, just painted on but done well enough to look raised. great lume, too, which i love.

  • Ah damn first missed out on a chair and now miss out on the watch, wanted the eco drive titanium.

  • Hey WatchNerd, do you have any recommendations for an entry level pilot watch?

    • Citizen Eco-Drive BM6835-23E $159.00

    • Do you mean with the slide rule feature? This seiko keeps popping up in reviews. It looks like hours of fun learning from the little booklet, or online videos.

      • Yeah potentially, or just a nice analogue with a means of telling the time in UTC as well as local time. Thanks for the suggestions!

Edit: yep, the slide rules (we call them whizz wheels) can do some pretty amazing stuff. Quicker than a calculator once you know your way around them. I worry it might be too small to be usable on a watch though.

Got the blue one mate! ( Citizen Eco-Drive Blue Chrono CA7040-85L)
    Thanks heaps

  • Bought one to gift, cheers!

  • +2

Citizen eco drive Ca7040 blue and black dials dropped to $169 on this weekend sales

    • all time low, iirc. i bought the blue one for $185 last june.

      • Yeah same, got the blue one just last month from this post XD

Maybe they're wanting to clear out the few remaining they have in stock. Nonetheless it's a cracking value.
