Good deal on a well-reviewed eGPU for PC or macOS (intel Mac's only)

According to the 3Camel's, this is the lowest price ever.

For people that don't know what this does it basically allows you to connect a more powerful GPU/graphics card to your MacBook/laptop, (assuming you have thunderbolt 3) vastly improving graphic performance in many ways for use in gaming, 3D rendering etc.

FYI lots of reviews say it performs best with two monitors so get yourself a dummie HDMI to maximize performance if you don't use two monitors :)

Enjoy!

  • Pity I don't have a GPU to use with it :(

    • the truth haha

  • Not the Chroma with extra USB ports.

    • +3

Yea but it's not worth it IMO. Using the USB ports throttles the card output so not worth it. Just get a cheap dock…

The Chroma RGB lights are nice I guess.

    Useless without a GPU.

    • +16

yeah it should come with a free laptop to connect it to too smh 😤

      • What, you expect me to provide my own power plant too, on top of this?! smdh downvoted.

    • +1

you can have my GT710 for free. problem solved!

Egpus are genuinely awesome, but do need some fiddling:
    1) bit locker settings may need to be tweaked to stop it tripping from iGPU to dgpu.
    2) windows works best if both laptop monitor and desktop monitors are on the same scaling; otherwise Windows sometimes restores Windows to the wrong size
    3) have a little script to disable the iGPU when you connect to the dgpu, as Windows doesn't always transfer app memory/rendering from the iGPU to the dgpu, and they lag a bit.

    • Good tips!

    • +1

no 2 is always an issue with laptops which are connected to external displays so this is not specific top egpu setup…

For example, for a 15" FHD laptop screen Windows by default sets it to 125% scaling which can cause weird scaling effect as you move to external monitors…

point #1 and #3 are indeed egpu issue as laptops with igpu and dgpu can usually switch seamlessly using Optimus…

      • I've never had an issue in the 5 years of my work thinkpad connected to 2 external monitors

        • many factors come into play here… again, check the default scaling set up on your laptop… in general you can fix it by choosing a resolution on the laptop that is still comfortable to view on a 100% scaling…

i had a Surface Pro from work and its high res was a bit annoying when dealing with display scaling… i had to use regedit to add custom res to lower the res into a comfortable res for 100% scaling…

  • Would this kick up my nuc pc a gear or 2? (Is has thunderbolt 3)

I recently bought xbox controllers for cloud gaming, but there is a disappointing amount of local multiplayer options. If I get my 4k tv and have to run it locally, I think I'll need more power.

Don't hate me and 1080p Panasonic 58" 10 year old plasma. I know there's many Ozbargainers waiting for this indestructible tank to die…

as long as the computer is compatible with eGPUs it could potentially make a huge difference. (assuming you get hold of a decent GPU)

    • +1

Its kicked mine up! Have an 11th Gen Intel NUC and used this with a RX580 and have been very happy.

  • So are there like multiple fans or a huge AIO?

    • It's just a box with a PSU, a fan and a PCIe to thunderbolt adapter.

  • I have this eGPU dock, be prepared to order a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable (pricey), the original thunderbolt 3 cable in the box is very limited…

    • Agreed. I got this the last time is was on at $336 the cable is ~30cm long so a pain in the arse to use, doesn't even make it to the front of the unit.

      • while the cable is unreasonably short mine is exactly 70cm long.

  • Not a great deal. Has been as low as $336: https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B07D9CD8M9

    • is that one from the US? Because it is not currently for sale in Australia if you check the Amazon link.

      • I don't recall. But yes maybe from the US or UK.

        • That is right. It was UK & I was about to pull the trigger before it went $375 & then oos. Waiting for the same deal but it's been oos ever since.

  • Will a 3090 Ti fit inside this? /s

  • I have one of these but just a general question - is the board on this device what limits it to Thunderbolt 3 and not 4?

    • +1

Thunderbolt 3 and 4 are the same in terms of bandwidth, 40Gbps. However Thunderbolt 4 has stricter requirements in order to be certified, such as dual 4k 60hz monitor support. Whilst Thunderbolt 3 can achieve this, it is not a requirement. USB 4 can have Thunderbolt compatibility easily implemented and will be more abundant in 2022, so I think prices will come down for these docks even more.

    • Yeah as the Core X was released before Thunderbolt 4

  • I have the Core X Chroma and I find the fans to be a bit noisy at idle and load, especially the PSU. I could fix the 120mm fan by replacing it with a Noctua S12 but the PSU gets really loud with a 250-300W 1080Ti. It also doesn’t idle silently with noticeably PSU fan noise with my 1070Ti which supports fan stop, but the noise at load isn’t too bad since it only draws 180-220W. I’m working on replacing the PSU with an SF750 but just beware of the noise and extra cost to fix it if it’s bothersome.
