Xiaomi Mi AIot Router AX1800 Dual Band Wireless Router WIFI6 $73.50 ($68.50 with eBay Plus) Shipped @ PCByte via eBay

130

Bought this to replace the stock Optus router which is driving me cray cray.
Seems to be a good bang for buck (budget) router based on previous posts (and has been cheaper before).
eBay Plus users get extra $5 off and free express delivery.

  • Thanks, just bought one as well!

  • Their website is listing for 59 dollar. I have three for my home mesh.

    • Can they be used with wired back haul or is it wireless only? (I’m assuming wireless)

      • Can be used with wired backhaul. That is my setup with two of these.

    • Are you using this for mesh network?

      • yes wireless mesh network using Hybird mode (2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz)

    • Is the home mesh stable and performing well? There are plenty of reviews for the router, but I can't find any that looked at the mesh functionality performance.

      • +1

The mesh is stable but the Wifi can be abit tricky. The wifi works 97% of the times. But you pay for what you get. For $59 each i can't complain given the performance on a 500/50 connection

Fyi these need to be hacked for vlan tagging (eg for tpg)

  • My Optus router is playing up recently as well. I put a fan on it and it seems to be working better. I I think it's might be over heating.

    • My impression is the stock routers barely meet minimum standards

  • Xiaomi Mi AIot Router

    How many is alot?

      Its aiot not alot

  • Can anyone please recommend any decent WiFi amplifiers/extenders? Got too many walls in this damn house.

    • If you have many walls, or thick walls, it's best to get a mesh solution. A bit pricey to begin with, but you'll have better reception and consistent speeds throughout the house. Maybe start with something like this if you have one of the default routers your ISP has given you. That might be enough to improve things. But get something which you can add other nodes to make a mesh.

Asus have a pretty good range, and their firmware is excellent. Great for tracking devices, usage, etc.

      • Thanks, but not ready to spend much. Just need something to boost signal a little bit.

  • +1

Ninja buy = PC byte? I didn't know this.

  • Would this have better range than the RT-AC59U V2?

I'm struggling to get signal upstairs with the RT-AC59U V2.

  • OpenWrt summary: Not going to happen because 256mb ram isn't enough for the 11ax wireless drivers to function. They're very memory hungry drivers.

  • I saw a black tower version also Xiaomi AX1800. Which one is newer/better?

I really want better parental control than just hour based in the Sad-gemcom Optus one. Anyone with this one with feedback?

    • +2

The black tower version has the same specs but is for the Chinese market. I think the web interface is in Chinese only but can be translated in Chrome or you can use the app (in English). They are pretty much the same but the black one may have higher transmit power as I believe this global version is limited by EU regulations.

Re: parental controls, the app does allow you to block internet access for each device and schedule this to repeat every day/weekdays for the times you want, but otherwise it is quite limited in terms of settings. This would be the same for all Xiaomi routers.

  • Can anyone suggest if these will still operate in mesh mode (with the AX1800 xiaomi firmware), if you put OpenWRT onto an AX3600 as the main router?

    • Anyhow, at the moment I am running 1x AX3600 with 2x AX1800 (this router) as a mesh, working very well.
I would like to update to OpenWRT but understand that may not be possible.
There is some work going on for the AX3600 but not the AX1800 as far as I could tell.

      https://forum.openwrt.org/t/adding-openwrt-support-for-xiaom…

      • My understanding is that all vendors have their own proprietary mesh systems, none of which are interoperable.

So you would need your AX1800s to be on openwrt as well, but I can't see that happening based on the discussion in the openwrt forum.

        • understood - thanks.

    • Does it support full openwrt? Namidairo above says, it wont due to lack of memory.

      • It's not listed on the OpenWRT table of hardware.

        • Ah ok. Thanks.

  • Can I connect my HFC NBN box into this?

    • +1

with most HFC you get 2 devices from the ISP.

      1. is the cable modem
      2. is the gateway/router

The cable modem (small black box that has NBN printed on the front / Arris CM8200 for mine) - needs to stay.

You replace the gateway box with this Router by plugging the LAN from modem into this router (instead of current gateway/router)

      • Awesome, thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure if the ISPs provided gateway/router has some modem-magic going on.
If the Arris NBN modem is all that's required, I assume I can stick it into any router then (although this Xiaomi model looks like good value for money)

        • You can always add this router to the network/existing gateway router (side by side) - if by some odd chance the ISP has some (super unlikely) voodoo hacky config on the provided gateway/router. Run it side by side so Modem<->Provided Router (leave as is)<->Aftermarket Router. And just move all ethernet cables to this router, and all Wifi devices to this router's wifi network + turn off the provided one's wifi.

  • No USB 3.2 ports. So no.
