Powertech 1.2V AAAA Rechargeable Ni-MH Batteries 400mAh (2 Pack) $6.95 (Flex 5 / Surface Pens) + Post, $0 C&C / In-Store @Jaycar

440

These batteries have never been posted before but are now $1 cheaper than when I purchased last October. These are extremely cheap when you compare them to the chuck away Energizer AAAA Alkaline 2 Pack @ $7.98. These batteries hold charge very well. I have had 1 sitting since I purchased and fully charged it in October 2021 and in under 5 min with my VC04, was fully recharged again.

Great option for all those people with the Flex 5 deals that are starting to need to consider replacement batteries. Alkaline Twin packs are also available for $1.95, but considering you get hundreds of recharges from the Rechargeable, they are a much better option for your wallet and the earth.

These batteries are much smaller than AAA and should fit most adjustable chargers like Astrolux VC04

A reminder that many 9V batteries contain 6 of these alkaline cells.
These are very useful for computer styluses, where the cells last many months, and recharging is not justified.

Look for a battery labelled "6LR61".

Yes they last for last many months, but so does my mouse. I don't understand why you think "recharging is not justified" as these will last for many many years. I still have a AAAA rechargeable from 2014 and it still lasts months per use. Chuck away (Alkaline) is a waste of money and resources. Also, some devices do use more power than others. I find the flex 5 drains batteries quicker than my surface 4.

Note: I would personally use around 6 batteries a year over 2 devices, so $5.85 for chuck away per year vs $6.95 for many years use

    TIL quad-A batteries exist lol

    • +8

Very uncommon for most people still. They are also stupidly expensive compared to AA, AAA, even though they use much less materials.

Also, TIL what TIL stands for 😂😂. I had no clue

      • +1

TIL what TIL stands for because of your curious mind.

How is this compare to Ladda AAA 1.2V 750mAh? https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/ladda-rechargeable-battery-hr03…
Does mAh matter as 750 vs 400?

    • +4

This one is AAAA. It's a different size (like AA vs AAA kinda thing).

As iridiumstem pointed out and every time I do a battery post, it's a different battery. AAA is more for general mouse, remote, everything use, whereas AAAA is for Laptop Pens

Jaycar wholesale (Electus distribution) have a minimum order value of $50 though, and you'll have to add shipping costs to that as well.

You'll also have to open an account with them. When I applied, the approval process was manual, so it wasn't instant, but that may have changed.

I used to have an account with them, but after maybe a year of inactivity, they closed it.

      • Yes you are right :)

Can these be recharged by the conventional NiMH battery charger or a specific aaaa charger is required?

    • +1

Most chargers will supply too high a charging current for this battery.

As the battery capacity is 400mAh, I recommend a charging current of 150mA to 200mA. If you have a smart charger and can set the charging current this low, then it should charge just fine, other than possible difficulties with keeping the battery in place while it charges - the contacts on some chargers may make this difficult. Note that AAAA batteries are shorter than AAA batteries, so your charger must have contacts that can adjust to this length.

      • You can just use some random nuts or washers to extend the battery - if your charger has spring loaded contracts (like the Nitecore etc) then the spring tension keeps everything in place 👍

        • I've seen people use small nickel-plated rare-earth magnets, on other batteries. They will stay in place, and are readily available on eBay.

These are extremely cheap when you compare them to the chuck away Energizer AAAA

The Energizer are 1.5V, not 1.2

    • +1

Happy new year to you too jv.

    • All rechargeable 1.5v equivalent are 1.2v.

      If not give real examples.

      • +1

Well, you are almost 100% correct.
There do exist some li-ion AA & AAA rechargeable batteries which in fact a 3.7v li-ion cell and a buck converter to take the voltage down to 1.5v. So they are 1.5v (output) rechargeable batteries.
They often have a USB port for charging, some need a special charger.

        Some examples:
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/193732424272
        www.ebay.com.au/itm/194247359529

(These are not the 3.7v output li-ion 14500 cells, nor the non rechargeable "lithium" AA/AAA batteries)

      • +1

There are also NiZn rechargeable batteries available, at 1.65V. While this voltage sounds high, alkaline batteries are actually 1.6V when new, and Energizer lithium (non-rechargeable) batteries are 1.7V when new.

        https://hobbyking.com/en_us/ni-zn-aa2500mwh-1500mah.html

They need a charger designed for NiZn batteries

        • Ah, I had forgotten about hobby king and their Turnigy LSD batteries… I haven't seen them in ozbargain for a while…

          • +1

            @spaij:

            Turnigy LSD batteries… I haven't seen them in ozbargain for a while…

That's because they are frequently OOS, and due to shipping charges, are only economical in certain quantities that just fit within the maximum shipping weight. And determining shipping weight used to be a trial-and-error process, I hope their ordering process has improved.

  • +3

This is indeed a good price but a true Ozb'er would buy a $2 9V battery from places like the Reject Shop, and dismantle it to get 6 AAAA cells. Just google "9v battery aaaa cell".

    • +2

One of the big advantages of NiMh batteries is that they don't leak when they go flat.

If you do disassemble 9V alkaline batteries to get AAAA batteries, give thought to the price of the device you're putting the batteries into. If the battery leaks, it can make the device unusable.

Also, not all 9V batteries contain AAAA cells, many have lozenge-shaped cells.

      • They can fit 6 AAAA's into a 9v case? Doesn't seem right?

        Ie 6 * 1.5v = 9v

I've only ever seen the rectangular platters.

        • +1

I haven't tried it myself, but there are plenty of pics and videos showing that some 9V batteries contain six cylindrical cell which are roughly AAAA size, though they are a little thinner.

It seems to be a little dangerous too, in the video I saw, one of the six cells went "bang" as they were disassembled, and a bit of flying metal took a chunk out of that person's fingernail.

  • Half my house runs on batteries but I’m never needed AAAA YET? What are they used for??

    • +1

As others above mentioned, laptop styluses mainly. E.g. Microsoft Surface Pen.

      • thx.

Go team apple pencil, costs a million dollars but I don't need to source obscure batteries at least.

        • Isn't the battery in the apple pencil non-replaceable? Basically, in the bin when it stops holding charge. Also, these batteries are everywhere, just normally not the rechargeable types

          • @Froot Loops: Yep, but i've never had to do it yet, at least you are guaranteed 3 years trouble free with warrantee, and apple are really good about fixing things after that period.

            • +1

              @stewface:

guaranteed 3 years trouble free with warrantee

Sounds like that warranty period was carefully chosen so it won't get used. Most lithium-ion batteries drop below 50% capacity 3-5 years after manufacture.

apple are really good about fixing things after that period.

Then they should just offer a 5-year warranty, instead of using psychology to make you feel grateful.
