If you want to pick it up again there is plenty of great instructional content on YouTube from absolutely beginner fundamentals right up to expert level content.
Personally I enjoy the Daniel Naroditsky speedruns and some of the GothamChess tutorials and other content.
That scarecrow figure that shakes around while the computer is thinking is creepy.
The overall feel of the game is unpolished. It's like a game you'd find from a geocities website from 1998.The user interface is basic and there are no tutorials or hints on how to navigate the game/menus. Even for a child, I think there are better options.
Can't really complain too much for a free game with no ads, but it's definitely not worth anything paid in my opinion.
Chessmaster 10 or 11 if yiou can find it. Excellent basic tutorials to get them started. Then move on to more advanced stuff if they get serious.
Thanks OP!
Last time I tried this program it was crap. Try chessis or chess_play learn instead.
Thanks OP haven't played Chess in years - will give it a go .
