Ummm … you don't shuck internal drives 🤣

      OP clearly states it's SMR!

These drives are great when used for their original intended purpose - Ie archiving data. I have 5 of these as externals, and they perform well enough.

Not for use in a RAID, or as a boot drive.

Amazon sales not included, just an FYI

  • Good for storing random shit on as single drives, wouldnt use in a NAS.

    • or use as a back up for your NAS.

    • If configured to power down and they're in your NAS for Snapraid+MergerFS I reckon they're still a go. ZFS rebuilds, maybe not

  • Got a BarraCuda (SMR) 2TB today and is slow as sh*t.
Wouldn't ever buy a BarraCuda again. It's slower than my old Toshiba 5400RPM drive.

These are the cheapest, bottom of the barrel 5400RPM consumer drives that Seagate sells, if you're looking for speed you will have to buy the Ironwolf family.

They will cost you a $100 more though.

These drives are slow but they still have a use, mostly for people that just want to backup and archive stuff while paying very little per TB of storage. They are based on SMR so you do need to understand the limitations of this type of storage — they are very slow when you need to over-write files on a frequent basis.

      • Sorry if this is a bad place to ask, but I bought it from Harris Technology on Amazon for $66. Can I return it?

  • For some reason External HDDs are really expensive compared to bare internal drives right now. The cheapest portable 8TB I've seen is about $250+ …

Can anyone recommend a decent external enclosure to shove this drive into and carry around while traveling?

  • This is a good hard drive bought one 3 months ago, loads documents and Pictures (Weddings, Birthdays, Tentacles, Christmas) very fast.
