C&C Service Fee Waived for Orders below $20 (Was $3) @ Target

933

Similar deal to the Kmart one. Possibly a temporary thing as this page says they are still charging $3 admin fee for orders under $20.

I was able to test a few items under $20 and they all allowed free click & collect. Further, you can pick them up from your local Kmart if you’re happy to wait a few days.

Start just now? I don't think they charged me for my $9 Valhalla game for C&C on Thursday.

  • +1

I bought an item < $20 about a week ago and didnt have to pay a C&C fee

  • +10

Great! Now it is Ikea's turn.

    • +2

what's obnoxious about ikea, is if they cancel your order before progressing it to the collection stage, they think they can get away with keeping the $5 click and collect fee as well.

      • Oh really? Is that even legal?

        • +3

not a lawyer, but the c&c fee implies a service was provided. if the order was cancelled by them before order picking stage, i'm of the opinion that they should be refunding the fee as well. paypal certainly thought so and refunded me within minutes of me launching a dispute.

          • +1

@tdw: Did they say why they didn't refund the service fee if they did not provide the C&C service? i.e. they failed to have your order ready for collection due to their own fault.

            • @47: they didn't mention anything about the c&c fee when they refunded my order; all i got was a vague excuse for cancelling the order. no mention if it was out of stock etc.

  • +11

It's about time. It's not like they're putting staff on just for c&c. They're just using stuff idle time. Charging a fee is just the dumbest way to lose customers. It's like they wanted to fail

    • +5

Wanting to fail is Kmart's "you have to book a time to collect your item, but we didn't tell you that at the time you ordered, and the only times are between 10am and 2pm" system.

      • +4

Usually you can just turn up, I’ve found my local Kmart doesn’t check if you have made a booking and often they don’t have enough staff to get your items ready ahead of time anyway so you just wait in line and wait a few minutes for the staff to find it :)

        • I just told them to refund my copy of 7 Wonders and picked up Lost Ruins of Arnak from my FLGS instead. Got my money? Don't make me jump through hoops to get my sh*t.

    • +1

DJ have dedicated teams for instore fulfilment and click and collect. Similar to the ones you see at Coles and Woolies. So chances are Kmart and Target are Similar. So no, they aren't just using their idle time.

      • I agree, I picked up some items at Chadstone KMart and Target and they were quite busy with people picking up their orders. I estimate it would have required at least 1 full-time employee.

        • That’s what the profit covers. Why is there an extra fee at all to cover wages?

      • -1

They don't need to. Plenty of staff needing something to do.

    • +1

They have people rostered on just for click n collect and delivery orders. They don’t have idle people processing them at all. The volume of orders is crazy!

    • +4

Regardless of whether staff are idle or dedicated, there is some sort of cost to serve built into Targets retail prices.

I don’t buy that it’s more expensive to pick an order and check someone out with it than it is to service them via store (keep shelves full, tidy, answer questions, checkout, etc).

And I definitely don’t think that them having a high volume of online orders should end up being a consumers problem.

      It’s a bullshit practice, basically,

      • +1

Problem is Australian retailers are so backwards that they just slap on in store fulfilment on top of their regular store. It's literally a bunch of "personal shoppers" going around picking up the items as if a normal customer would. So their existing cost base is still there, and then they need to pay the personal shoppers.

They haven't moved into a dedicated fulfillment centres as they would need to carry extra inventory specially for online.

    • I've seen some Vege stores in my travels . 1 person at checkout with 20 people in line . Overflowing staff trying to stock the shelves elsewhere :)

    • Exactly. What a rort.
      Charging for click and collect.
Never seen them charge for lay buys.
      Why charge for click collect.
A service actually making them money.

  • Thanks OP. Bought 5 waivers

    • One more and scientifically, that's all you need to start a Mexican waiver.

  • +4

After the shockingly slow click and collect and no returns in store until lock down lifted, they probably realised how much business they lost to Amazon

    • +1

I was at a Target a few days ago, and a customer held up the click and collect queue for 10 minutes while she demanded a receipt, complained they hadn't picked her order fast enough, etc etc…
Then she went to nearby security guards and told her story, causing the CS to then go talk to the security guards to correct the record rather than service C&C about how unreasonable the customer was. Which she was but there was a huge queue that built up for C&C.
The CS seemed totally unmoved that there was a giant queue forming. Like nobody took initiative to clear said queue.

  • +9

I had no idea some places still charged for Click and Collect. That's just a stupid way to put off buying something. If it's internal stock moving from one location to another, fine, but if it's just a matter of a store person walking down an isle…wow

  • +1

    Targetted offer

  • +6

    I don't understand why there is/was a service fee for C&C.

    • +2

      Make extra money.

    • -4

In Ozb, we prefer everything for free. But in reality we usually get paid by hr.
Companies don't make much out of $2 items, so full fill a $2 item to click and collect it cost business money.
Business are to make money not to lose money.

      • -1

If it’s not profitable to sell $2 items then don’t sell them.

        • -1

          It's click bait items.

          • +2

@boomramada: So they do want people to buy them? Or they don’t? Pick a side?

    • Storage is one reason, the store I was at a few days ago was stacked high with Catch packages too. The CS took five minutes to find my C&C which I'm guessing is because they are stacking items everywhere and it's not easy to find things.
Nevertheless, I don't think they should charge for it.

  • +4

Imagine having to pay a fee in store for asking someone to help you, that's pretty much what this is

  • I purchased a cup for like a dollar and $3 clearance shoes a month or so ago, there was no fees

  • +4

When i wrote a comment regarding this last year when they started charging the fee i was literally stoned by ozbargain 🐑 wokes how dare i tra la la. And now everyones saying what i was saying. Go figure 🙄

Just shows people have no brains of their own and logical, critical thinking, follow, follow, to belong.

  • +3

I didn’t realise they charge for this. What a joke, it’s not like it’s more effort for them than people coming into the store to buy through the checkout.

Frankly I don’t see how it’s a bargain for something that the vast majority of businesses do for free.

    • -8

Run your own successful business then you will understand how things works.
Allowing this cost business money hence its a bargain.

      • +1

Disagree completely. Cost of staff are already included in purchases and I don’t buy that it’s more labour intensive to sell via click and collect.

And it’s not like these guys don’t have scale, we’re talking about literally one of Australia’s biggest companies.

        • You can disagree all you like, true cost based on man hours in business.
Perhaps go do a management accounting course. I can teach you but I get paid by min.

Frankly I don’t see how it’s a bargain for something that the vast majority of businesses do for free.

Both Coles and Woolies has a limit.
Bunnings no, but take light years to full fill your order. Does that say something?

          • +3

@boomramada: lol. You have no idea what I do for a living.

Just walk me through the cost breakdown of click and collect versus an in store retail purchase so that the good people of ozbargain know you can back up your statements.

            • -2

@p1owz0r: Who knows, you probably not doing what you supposed to do well I guess, otherwise you wouldn't be here having a pointless discussion with me 😉

Or send a Coles or WW ceo a email and tell them they not doing it right 😆

And I'm out, end of discussion.

              • @boomramada: And there we have it, no real knowledge to share on the subject.

                • +1

@p1owz0r: The mans time is valuable and he can't waste it on uneducated people is my read .

                  • +1

@popsiee: I can probably pay for 5 or 10 minutes though

  • This isn't really even in the realm of a deal imo.

  • +1

why the f is this even a thing? the staff is already there..

  • +3

For the people that think the fee is worthless here is a cost breakdown:

For both c&c and instore shopping
Stocking shelves, the person to check you out(either checkouts or getting your order from the storage), keeping store tidy ect.

For in store you have the cost of people to answer questions however they can also be doing other jobs like Stocking shelves at the same time.

For c&c you have the hours it takes to pick the order vs the customer spending that time picking the items unpaid, you have the time packing the order, you have the fees associated with running the order management software, you have the storage of orders where the space could be used for other things.

In addition in store you are more likely to purchase other items you see vs collecting an order you just go in and get what you paid for.

The fee is usually to encourage smaller purchases to be done instore so they can staff less for online, and hope you purchase other items instore.

    • When I'm shopping at Woolies the stock pickers are annoying with the bulky boxes they are carting around clogging up isles .

    • While the fee may be justified, it's not a good look from a customer / public point of view.

Usually, companies hide the cost in other ways to its consumer. Whether it's ethical / unethical, legal or illegal.

Companies have stated they can offer "free shipping" because the shipping price included in the product price (I don't know if this is unethical or illegal), or toll fees are included in the total rideshare, or washing your hair at the hairdressers is included in the cut and so on…

I assume, most people don't like seeing additional fees and try to minimise showing these fees to the customer.

If I am shopping online, lets say, eBay, I look for free shipping if possible then I compare the product price with the same product if it did have shipping additional and just buy the lowest total price. It's a psychological thing.

If you see in the comments, people stating about c&c fee is wrong / unethical, they have the most upvotes as customers in this example just don't see why they should pay to pick up an item they paid for, they drive to the destination and get it themselves at the counter.

So a guaranteed sale costs the store more than me walking in, asking a bunch of questions of the people working there and then deciding I don't want to buy something after all? You can cost estimate however you want. It's not a good idea to turn people off with a measly C&C fee. That would stop me going there for ANY C&C if I knew I would have to pay. I know of tons of stores that I would shop at before approaching a store that has a C&C fee.

      • -1

Funny it makes me spend $20 so I do not have to pay it.

        • That certainly works for me for free delivery, but not for C&C!

  • I just can't deal with Target click and collect. Even if it is free.
