I think this thread is what has raised customer expectations. DSE has specifically said all along that stock is limited.

        • +1

Along the the Twitter and FB postings by DSE themselves. I agree that this thread has a lot to do with increased customer expectations but hyping things up and having staff take first dibs in a big way still isn't cool for customers.

    Monday timeline:
Pre 9am - Bargain hunters lines up
9am - Staff grab stock from back corner of stockroom and process their sales
9:02 - Doors open. Crowd spills in and heads for games section.
9:03 - Excitement turns to despair as crowd only find one copy of "Horse Life 2" for NDS for $1
9:05 - Crowd heads for counter and ask for stock checks
9:15 - Sick of being asked stock questions. "Staff put up signs saying we have no sale stock left. Sorry"
9:30 - Complaints posted on every social forum in Australia by disappointed bargain hunters
11:00 - Journalists ring Dick Smith corporate for info on article they are posting online
11:30 - Dick Smith PR post media release saying "Game sale huge success, large nbrs of customers lining up to shop, sold out earlier than due to huge customer demand". Market analysts react and push up DSE stock price.
Noon - Stores being empty, Dick Smith staff go to lunch
    5:01pm - Staff party!

Tuesday - Staff quit and get job at Big W ;-)

      You forgot:

9:04 Fist fight ensues over one and only copy of "Horse Life 2". Crazed lady <-(me) shouts "WHERE ARE THE X BOXES? I KNOW YOU'VE GOT THEM! WHERE ARE YOU HIDING THEM YOU SCOUNDRELS?!?".

      • …and breaks out the Mace.

  • +5

I think their staff should be cut some slack. I've communicated with several stores in the last day and all were helpful and polite. I bet the same people who are dissatisfied are yet the same people who would themselves still ask to have something put aside prior to Monday or tried to use click and collect to reserve stock. For whoever gets the bargains good work.

    • +15

      I tend to agree swilso.

I walked into my local DSE today and enquired about the rumoured sale on Monday. The salesman sighed and said he was really sorry but the sale was supposed to be for staff only on Monday, with another sale to follow for the general public shortly after. He said the staff sale had been leaked and this is where the confusion has started.

It's all good and well to cry murder when you cannot get cheap bargains because someone else is in line ahead of you, but by the sounds of it staff were always supposed to get first dibs. We were never meant to know. Now that we do, many feel hard done by and have resorted to bad mouthing staff that work in the stores.

I never knew Dickies was in trouble and that their stores could soon be disappearing from my choice of retailers in the coming years. Some light googling turned up this and a couple like it:

      http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/companies/woolies-t…

I have never personally had problems with returns or refunds and the staff have always been helpful and polite in my dealings. It will be sad to see them go if they do, competition is always a good thing when looking for great prices.

So the staff get to purchase some items as a thank you from the company that has employed them, so you miss out on a cheap xbox or game. They haven't stopped manufacturing those items you, will just have to wait for another deal from one of the other electronics retailers that dot the horizon.

The Live tab on ozbargain still works and living on that page is where most of us will go back to once the sale is over anyway.

Good luck Dick Smith. Hope I still snag a deal during the sale, but life will go on just fine if I don't…

      • its a shame there are a large enough group of a minority that dont think that way

      • +3

If I didn't know otherwise I would've agreed with you here… but to me that store-clerk sounds like he's deceiving you big-time.
My mates work at DSE and they all said the sale was suppose to start monday for general public and nothing was about the staff… I also work at woolworths and I can definitely speak on behalf of the employees when I say woolworths would NEVER give a "thank you" sale to staff. They consider their employees to be rewarded monetarily and that is sufficient.
Furthermore, when i went in to inquire at my local DSE (my mates weren't there), and I asked one of the other employees (whom I knew from previous dealings) about the sale; to his knowledge the sale was suppose to start unofficially on monday (tomorrow), giving a minimum of 3 days to prepare the stores (price tagging everything), but the sale was still to be available to inquiring customers. It was likely to go public either when the stores were all aware of what stock to reduce and pricing (hence the price list that was leaked) or on the 11th as is now well known.

Definitely sounds to me like the DSE person you talked to was either lying or was seriously mis-informed.
More-over, staff sales at DSE are very often woolworth's wide sales … so if it were to be a staff sale, there's a very good chance that it would've been posted in the woolworths intranet.

        • you give us hope :D

          +1 internets to you

        • I agree, and had similar doubts. While companies may give staff benefits, the idea of a $7million staff sale sounds very unlikely.

  • +1

I can't blame the staff if management allows it. Harvey Norman managers don't allow staff to buy when special sale comes up. DSE should not have advertised in their facebook that sale is on when there is really nothing left to sell. This sale is for only Dick Smith staff and friends. I am beginning to think DSE have just trashed their name.

    • I would wait and see. Perhaps DSE is setting stock aside early to prepare as clearance items normally end up in a bargain bin or table. Either way, DS lost their way a long time ago from a specialist store to just another mainstream electronics store. If it's a sinking ship, i doubt many care about it. The sale should be called 'The Great Dick Smith Lucky Dip' instead.

  • +11

To those kicking up a stink about this whole thing, let me remind you that the list was never meant to be given out to the general public, you would have been informed about the sale via Facebook, and the catalogue eventually but you wouldn't know what was going on sale until the day it started, or if you went into the store to check out the sale.

The only reason for the uproar is because now you know what you may or may not be able to buy come Monday, all thanks to the person that leaked the list in the first place.

Guaranteed if this list was never leaked in the first place, none of you would have even known that a G19 Keyboard was going for $40, or a DSi for $20 etc, and you would have just been curious to see what was on special, walk into the store, and you could have got yourself a bargain.

Now it's just turned into a massive riot, all thanks to this one Staff member who thought it would be a good idea to leak classified information to the general public.

    • Well then, can I ask anyone if they knew of any markdown sale another company has made but offered to staff first. If this is widely being practiced then thumbs up to Grimezy for that comment and my faith in DSE has been restored.

      • +3

I know for a fact several other retailers allow their own staff to buy discount items first up. This is very standard practise with the only difference being there are a lot of amazing one-off deals throughout the year you won't see/hear about.

For example, DSE may have 5 particular 32" LCD TVs about 3+ years old throughout all stores which for some reason or another, haven't sold. The distributor/company of this TV may have closed up shop and DSE will put a $60 price tag on them to get rid of them, either manually or just something the system triggers. These TVs will obviously go to customers first considering they will know about the 'deal' first and they are more than likely display items or returned/possibly DOA stock that never got processed for again some reason or another. Due to the very limited stock, there's no point in advertising it to the general public as it will lead to disappointment and confusion. Seems to be the case here too.

        • +1

EDIT: Should be "will obviously go to staff first"

    • +16

"Guaranteed if this list was never leaked in the first place, none of you would have even known that a G19 Keyboard was going for $40, or a DSi for $20 etc, and you would have just been curious to see what was on special, walk into the store, and you could have got yourself a bargain."
      Emphasis added

Holy slavery Batman! How generous of you kind sirs to allow us meager peasants and serfs to peruse your inventory unmolested! Thou hast the wings of Gabriel himself upon thine shoulders.

So in other words, just as most of us have assumed from all this circumstantial evidence, this was essentially one, great big, bait & switch ploy to get us to waste our friggin' time marching over to your rapidly foreclosing branches, walking through deserted aisles and picking up scraps, while those world-renowned, bumbling nitwits that are DSE staff who have been the butt of a plethora of jokes amongst OB for years; clean up and haul off with the last of anything that we would consider buying from you guys from now on?

Thanks dude! I hope the Chinese treat you well comrade. Enjoy the 18 hours shifts amigo.

    • +15

Until the company officially announced it, the sale was just a rumor. Regardless of any leaks, price list, proposed staff sale, etc. Full control has been with DSE to decide what they wanted to do. They could have had a staff only sale (if planned), delayed it, called it off, etc. They chose to announce: "Many of you have heard the rumours, and we wanted to let you know they are true! …massive $7 million Gaming clearance will commence April 2nd, and you don’t want to miss it!"

People are now naturally responding to that (rather than any leak). When it is subsequently confirmed by many staff across Australia that there isn't much stock of higher value items people are naturally suspicious, $7 million amounts to a lot (eg. over 23,000 items valued over $300) of stock now being advertised as for the public.

Many companies would kill for the free exposure (word of mouth) and would capitalise on it (turn problem into opportunity as the paid consultants would say). The ball is fully in DSE's control. If DSE (via reps) want to get even with customers for finding out about the lack of stock that's their choice but it would be ill advised.

PS. There is nothing wrong with people expressing their on-topic views or making some light hearted comments. DSE should roll with it - People will be lining up outside DSE stores with cash in their hands come Monday 9am (rather than your competitors) ;-)

    • grimzey, how about if i forward ur comment to smh.com.au… makinf more interesting..
luckily.. i am a WES shareholder… . your dicky stores would ruin woolies reputation….seeling cheapie prices to staff members…no wonder selling off the dickies stores from WOW's portfolio

      • Your a shareholder in kmart, nuff said don't you think?

  • +2

Arcticfox, if true then this leak was a very bad idea. However, it remains to be seen if regular consumers do get their hands on these bargains on the 11th, and how much stock is actually left over after the staff has hoarded to their hearts content. DSE should have played this better after the leak got out, they should have clearly specified this on twitter and facebook instead of leading on customers and pissing them off thereafter.

    • +1

No doubt things could have been controlled better by those in the power to do so.

But attacking every single staff member that works for the company seems a tad excessive.

If you worked for Dick Smith, what would you do? Would you demand head office allow everyone access at the same time you did? Would you purposely not buy anything to make a point to follow staff members in your store?

  • all i want to know is products that say they have been discontinued online that are included in the sale, are they going to be available online for sale on monday?????

  • I drive past Dick Smith on my morning commute. Gonna be pretty LOLS worthy to see the big lines.

    • I can see my local store from my office window. Curious to see the line that builds prior to 9am.

      • Im thinking of skipping dick smith monday morning now, even though i also drive past.

        • -1

1 less person in line, let the revolution begin ;)

  • I assume the sale is called "Dick's Game on Sale" - 19 items are listed already under the banner ( no discounts yet)

    • I can't see the banner - whereabouts on the site is it?

    • Great, 19 items left after DSE staff have picked out all the good stuff. I guess we can buy them off eBay now.

  • +12

I don't mind the staff taking items for themselves, I agree that it's a fair thing for them to do in light of what some of the above comments have said. However, I think the general bitterness of the public is that staff have supposedly taken nearly everything; leaving no stock left to the general public. Regardless of whether the sale was scheduled to be on the 2nd or the 11th, I don't think it changes the ultimate reality that there will no stock left to the public by that date (the 11th probably makes things worse since the staff have more time to get stuff). If that's the case, I would have rather not known about the sale entirely, than get my hopes up.

    • +3

very well said..I agree with you on everything you've mentioned.

      • +3

Same here. It was a matter of expectation management. It's bad enough the list was leaked but to have a twitter and FB post get our hopes up falsely just isn't cool.

    • Your display picture is of Happy!

      • Haha yup, and I hope I will be that way tomorrow at 9am.

  • +1

Out of sight, out of mind…

  • I just did a quick read of the list available…. All the items on sale are old games and in terms of xbox live stuff it's all the old packaging type which means most likely you won't be able to get them cause most stores would have sold out of the old packaging type by now…

    • except the FIFA12 PS3 bundle, and the PC gaming Hardware

  • according to my local disk smith stores, all 3 of them, the staff get first pic, so they will probs get all the xbox 360's and g19 then sell them on ebay for double the price

  • +5

That's it I've had enough and negging this debacle.

  • +1

Well I just stopped in at my local Dick Smith and they had a bunch of games still there. I asked one of the staff about it and she said that the staff sale has already happened and, at their store, they aren't allowed to buy any of the games tomorrow until their lunch break, and then they can buy whatever is left after the public has bought what they want.

    I was impressed!

    • +5

They probably told you that so that you don't get upset i'd say…

Wise man once told me… Don't expect anything and you'll never be disappointed!

      • +4

Wise man once told me… Don't expect anything and you'll never be disappointed!

        Was his name Phil Dunphy?

      • You're probably right, but I've got nothing to lose by going and checking it out :)

        • yes you do..time wasted by going..lol

  • Is this still happening tomorrow?

    • It may be worth checking out, then again, it may just a total mangina non event.

  • +1

I went into the local store (a big one) and there was absolutely nothing in stock. The staff member admitted there was one display G19 Keyboard available (the other new one was reserved for a staff member) and when he proceeded to show me its location it was 'missing'. Now, I wonder where it might have went… I would not have any high hopes, and this sale is going to be most unfortunate for DS and their staff. There will be many disappointed people. I am negging this leaked STAFF DEAL which should never have been confirmed by DS on FB or Twitter in the first place.

  • +4

Just thinking, Maybe we should post a list of what we get our hands on. Not how many or so, just post what ever product we buy.
That way we can see what % of the products were actually available to the public for this $7 million sale.

  • +2

Total non-event. First store (my local one) I visited informed me it "had been cancelled" due to it being leaked, that there would be a sale on games, but it would start on the 11th. How very amusing, but as I wasn't keen to check if it had been announced on here, I just left.
Second store I visited informed me that as a much newer store, they never had any of those items (or if they did, not much stock) as all the things being sold are 'old and outdated'. I did offhandedly comment that not all of it was outdated (hullo? G19? G9x? The PSP3000 is actually better than the E1000 anyway), and he shrugged and made a face that probably meant he was aware of some exceptions to that description. Anyway, he recommended visiting the older stores, as they were more likely to have had those items for sale in the first place.

That said: I did see Witcher 2 at the first store, DEHR at the second, and both had quite a few PS3 accessories and the second had quite a few Wii accessories. Strangely enough I didn't see any Wii consoles (?? :/ already bought by the staff?), and the only X360 consoles I saw were the ones bundled with a Kinect, and I did not see a single PS3, DSi or PSP3000.

I think I will brave one of the larger and older stores tomorrow morning, but I suspect my small stature will not help me. :P

  • i just went to dick smith and bought the G27 racing wheel i asked him about the sale and he said it will start tomorow , only games everything else is out of stock.

  • +1

I went to Charlie Square and a mate we to Greenhills (NSW) and both of us got told it was all old stock and most stores won't have anything but a few of the games off the list.

    What a fizzer! :-(

    • Any DSi's as the website lists "in stock" for Greenhills.

      • They said they had "no consoles" but who knows if they meant DSi or just xbox n PS3…

        • +1

should have been more specific and asked if they had any DSi's. I asked at Kotara and was told no. Now the website lists both stores as having stock of these, but why would staff not want to sell to someone at the full price today and keep them over to the clearance price 2moro. Unless they have them reserved for themselves out back of course :(

  • There's only one item I truly want. Not on the list, but should go on sale, as it's rather useless. DSE should've got stores to send a majority of stock back, then done a staff sale with leftovers, and an online sale for the public.

  • +1

One of the stores I checked out in Perth were very helpful and checked stock numbers of various other stores for me of Nintendo DSi's - most still had plently in stock according to the system. However when I called a couple of those stores I was told that they didn't have any or were already reserved by staff.

When I asked about them I was answered with a very hesitant "why?", however all in all most of them were fairly rude (except the one who gave me the stock details)

Will try my luck in the morning and fingers crossed I get something out of it!

  • What a debacle. My local DSE had nothing left worth buying.

  • I was just told by my local dse that the sale tomorrow is for games only as the store has nothing else?

  • This is terrible. Boycott. Either Dicksmith has been giving out inconsistent information, or their staff are flat out lying to everyone.

    • +1

One staff member told me the sale was cancelled

      • was that today on April fools though Twisty? ;p

  • +1

This sounds like total BS, I will be very surprised if anyone picks up anything decent in store. I think the poster who said it was a staff sale all along is right.

  • OK i just got back from Kotara "Large" (NSW) and apart from the G27's for $139 which staff were bringing out for sale (around 10) there was a table of $5 clearance games (stuff like PES, FIFA, Cricket, WWE, GH, DJH, WiiFit Plus, DS Cooking, etc. Not the new titles though).

Didn't see any of the clearance Xbox's or PSP's in the glass cupboard. Plenty of DSiXL's though. Asked about DSi was told no stock. Strangely the website lists DSi as "in stock" for this store. Staff probably got dibs on them out back lol.

  • The old age saying of if it's too good to be true, it usually is.
DSE are going out of business for a reason, they're a shoddy retailer.

    • +2

I wouldn't really call them shoddy. I thought they were actually quite competitive. I got a good deal on the Sony Bravia TV from them last year before christmas lol.

      • shoddy in the sense they run a "high low" pricing strategy to trick the customer in thinking they got a better deal than it actually was.

they set their instore tickets high (even higher than what everyone else is selling it for) and then drop the price to market levels in catalogue to show an enormous save message.

they had a cordless phone for $99 save $50 and i waled into JB and bought the exact same model for $89 and that was the shelf price.

  • I guess it doesn't matter now whether the deal is true or fake, I will head down to my local DSE just for the LULz

  • +1

good to hear DSE is doing something for their staff

I worked there for 3 years and got nothing like this… though staff discount (cost+15%) was pretty sweet provided I kept below the "questions be asked" limit

    • +6

Staff work at these places for a salary. % Discounts are neat bonus to. I'm not sure that should make them entitled to 'hoard it all before the public' schemes these rare times DSE has exceptional deals on offer on store items, though. If the chain is going to take that approach they'd really be better off calling off the sale rather than promoting it on facebook/twitter as open to the public and 'of this size' if to all intents and purposes it's not or there won't be anything left.

Trying to play it both ways just seems like a perfect way to curry resentment.

  • Only thing good instock in our store were the 3DS games.

its a clearance of "old" stock. what did u expect?

most of you sound like cry babies

    • +3

Wah wah. Stock beforehand - reps taking stock = no stock + confirmed sale = what we are all unhappy about.

      • +2

        cool story bro.

  • I rang 5 stores in sydney and all said the sale is legit was leaked and starts tomorrow . None of them had stock of consoles ps3 Xbox Dsi or psp.they have the games and accessories but won't hold/reserve anything

  • +2

@HeXa- errr.. You're making it sound as if those guys that work at DSE don't get paid. You have big sales to encourage people to buy other things (that aren't on sale) when they come into the store. Giving everything out to your workers isn't in the interest of any decent business as very few sales come from the workers.

What a choas, don't really care though. Kinda had a feeling something like this would happen since every DSE store was saying something different about the sale.

  • +7

DSE staff are killing this sale

      • +2

Hmm..no. This sale is meant to be for everyone not just the DSE Staff! If they were told to buy when everyone (public) was given access then it wouldn't be so bad. Oh poop the staff might lose their jobs but if the public is turned off DSE it will have more ramifications in the long run.

        • sale was suppose to be staff only until a 'staff member' leaked it.

          lol @ ramifications

        • and then DSE Rep declared it official.
Do sell or don't sell, there is no try

        • +4

'sale was suppose to be staff only until a 'staff member' leaked it.'

Could be - i won't say that's impossible - but honestly doesn't ring true to me; not with facebook/twitter/bargain site confirmations etc virtually immediately. I'd say it's more like the list wasn't supposed to be made public and the staff, being first to know with list in hand, intended to take advantage of that but doing so has become more difficult now with everyone aware of products and prices and on the watch for what's going on with stock levels.

Who really knows, though? It's all a bit of he said/she said. Only confirmed thing is there's a sale on, it's huge, the reductions are huge and everyone wants in on it to get what they can get.

      • +2

It's sad to see them go, but like I said before I've been in the same situation and we did not get first dibs. It's unfair to customers that were told there is a sale and not find anything. DSE is a consumer shop and not a staff outlet like Samsung has for its employees, DSE staff are not entitled to any sale items more than regular customers, should the fact that they get 5% advantage be more than enough.

Aldi doesn't even have these type of staff benefits, mostly staff do not get dibs on Catalogue items(thursday/Saturday) and you work more than any of the Dick Smith staff ever will.

  • FWIW, how the hell do people know "Dicksmith staff are TAKING EVERYTHING!" before they have even been in?

Surely logic suggests wait until tomorrow and then make your minds up. I have rang several stores over the past few days and there stock as remained fairly consistent.

    • same way you did but with decreasing stock numbers

  • +1

DSE make $20m per profit year shame they don't make enough to satisfy HO who will do anything for a buck like Coles at the end of the day we all lose. No choice = higher prices sooner or later.

  • So does the sale start 9am ONLINE or is it just for STAFF?
    Can the header be updated?

  • +1

Went to the Toombul (Brisbane) store today. Saw a staff member picking out stuff from the 360 games section. PS3 games section was bare like the Elizabeth St store. Think I'll head straight to work tomorrow.

    • You see if there were still many $5 360 games left at Toombul? Looking to get NFS: The Run for $10 and maybe F1 2010 for $5 but it's as bad as you say, I might stick to getting stuff online. Both are in stock according to their website and was hoping to get lucky.

      • I don't own a 360 so I haven't paid attention to the $5 360 games on the list. There was a lot more 360 games than PS3 ones but this was around noon… who knows what they've put in the back room by now.

        • Thanks for the reply. Might have a quick look in the morning but not expecting to get anything.

        • No worries mate. Hope you have some luck getting the games you want. All the ones I'm interested in are pretty much gone :-(

  • My local store was showing "in stock" for all colours of DSi the last two days including earlier today. Now all but white is out of stock……they must have let staff buy them today.

    • +1

how can they buy at a cheaper price though? Might have been reserved and taken out of the system.

  • online stock check for the ps3 fifa 12 bundle pretty much no stock every where in melbourne…yeah I'm giving this a pass…good luck to anyone who gets something decent..
