  • Shame you can't somehow connect it to the built-in Android TV…

Lytmi will launch a camera version in 2022.

Check out Hue Essentials or Hue Sync in the app store, it works great for syncing with Plex to the hue bulbs and light strips

      • Thanks @asa79 will do. I mainly watch Plex, so this should be great.

  • Oh wow - does anyone have any experience in these? I've been wanting a Philips Hue setup for ages but laugh at the price. These seem to fit exactly what I'm looking for and priced right.

    • I had backed Lightpack 2 on Kickstarter back in 2016…received it 3 years later…used it for a few months and then put it back in the box. Great idea but it would not work half of the times, plus I then got a smart TV with built-in Android TV and since I had no other external players it wasn't worth the effort. I got a LifX strip, which obviously doesn't match the colours on the screen, but at least offers some backlight which makes watching TV more pleasant.

      • So this is purely only an input? It won't be able to display colours for inbuilt smart tv features? That massively dampens my keenness.

        • +1

None of these boxes can. They all rely on being able to read the input signal (via hdmi) to work out the colours. If the TV is using internal apps then the box has no input it can read.

The only TVs that can do this are the Philips Ambilight sets. Because it is integrated they can drive the backlights no matter where the signal is coming from, internal or external.

The other alternative is the offering by Govee, which uses a small camera to scan the screen and read the colours, so is therefore independent of the input source. The downside is that some people report the colours can sometimes not be accurate (particularly greens, for whatever reason), but on the other hand, it's way cheaper. Currently can be had for a tad over au$100 (inc delivery), give or take. Caveat: haven't used one myself, but am tempted given the stratospheric price for a Hue setup.

          • @Astronaut Joe: I suppose something else you could do is to get a Chromecast with Google TV for around $50 and plug it into Lytmi. I know, this would mean that you won't be using your smart TV as it was supposed to, but it should do the trick. Don't have any experience with Chromecast, but I think it should work.

Not sure if you'll still able to control your soundbar and other speakers connected directly to the TV though, if your TV only has 1 CEC enabled HDMI input…

            • @autocader: @OP could you let us know if that would work? I have a Sonos Arc, so would like to know if I'd still be able to operate it if I plug it into Lytmi, since Lytmi would need to occupy the only 1 CEC enabled HDMI input of my TV. I'm guessing I'll need a HDMI splitter too, as Lytmi has only 1 HDMI input.

              • @autocader: Splitter or HDMI switch is needed.

                • @denghongterry: Do you know if CEC then becomes available to all devices connected to the splitter going into the Lytmi and finally to the TV?

                  • @autocader: Hi, you need to make sure all the HDMI devices have the CEC function themselves and also the TV, and make sure the connection is in proper order: HDMI devices>Splitter out1>TV and Splitter out2>Neo

                    • @denghongterry: Thank you. Yes, TV and Sonos Arc have CEC, so from what you’re saying it should be good.

          • @Astronaut Joe: And also that Govee option is much cheaper…

Wish I knew if this was worth the upgrade in cost, but can't find any comparisons

            • @adamtuba: From what I’ve read though, Govee doesn’t have any white light…it’s all colour. You can see that on video reviews too. This doesn’t look like an issue Lytmi has.

  • I have the previous model and it's great. I have it connected through xsx so i wish I'd waiting for this one as mine only allows 4k/30fps.

  • Would this be good with a PS5 hooked up to the TV?
Does that mean anything watched via the PS5 would then match the colours? Even gaming/Netflix/Plex for example?

    • +1

Yeah. Everything going through the ps5 will have matched colours but only things going through ps5 work.

  • I've taken a punt and bought it ($U170 with cable for 75 inch TV). No way can I justify ~$1K for the hue play. I did try to build one with a raspberry pi but wasn't able to get all the bits to work together (which are now in a box in the garage.)

I'll plug it into my nvidia box with Kodi.

    • Let us know how you get on

      • +1

It arrived today (16th) and took about 30 minutes to physically setup - tv off wall, run 2 x led strips around tv edge and trim to size, attach box to back of tv and run power lead down to plinth. I did spend 30 minutes beforehand working it all out so maybe an hour in total.

Connected to new Xbox X (thanks to ozbargain the other week - ebgames preorder came through early on Tuesday) and it just worked.

It looks just like the vids on YouTube, super responsive and never misses a beat. Very happy.

        • Awesome, thanks for coming back to share the update.
Is it distracting? Does it add value or just a cool gimmick?

        • Got mine delivered as well..will set it up after boring meetings :(

          • @smarter_fool: If anyone is still on the fence, my suggestion is to give yourself this magnificent gift this xmas. It's awesome. The only thing is that I had to put the stickers a inch or more away from the edge as the length of the strip was not enough. I was also expecting a translucent cover on the led strip (as per videos) and was surprised to see a clear cover instead. Can't say if I would have noticed any difference anyway.

            • @smarter_fool: Personally pretty disappointed in the product.
received yesterday and went to set it up straight away.
Ordered 65inch as that's my TV size. Even measured it before hand to make sure.
If you put the clips on the edge of the TV all round the LED strips end up being too short. By about 10cm each, not a small amount. So I had to remove the double sided taped clips, not an easy task, and put them all spaced about an inch and a half in from the edge.
You can use them without the app, if you put the starters at the lower right corner.
But there was a noticeable quarter second lag on the lights. If there is a scene/picture change the lights can be quite distracting, as it's not in sync.
I thought it might be because I hasn't used the app to configure them. But I can't even get that to work either.
Fair warning, the app says it requires GPS, Bluetooth, and local network access. Giving it all that I still couldn't get it to connect with the lights, and gave up after about 3 hours of fiddling around.
I used the lights to watch about 2 hours of YouTube, and a couple of TV episodes before disconnecting them due to not being able to concentrate with the sync lag.
In my opinion, this is just another cheap Chinese product (that also harvests your data) that's overpriced as it's one of the first on the market.

  • Thanks OP. My mate convinced me to get them - Black Friday has made my wallet hurt real bad :)

Super keen to hear how this goes!
