If only it was the Z6ii…
Though the latest firmware apparently has improved Autofocus quite a lot..

    • ikr, but the camera price went up a lot in covid… sadge

  • Damn, at that price I'm almost annoyed at buying my z5+24-70 for a touch over $2000 a few months ago.

This is a great price, I feel like Nikon has quietly become one of the best value options in FF mirrorless land.

    • if u’ve taken a lot of photos using it, it still worth. memories and time are priceless

Yeah I've taken it on a few trips — that's how I'm justifying it to myself. And tbh I wouldn't really benefit much from the additional features of the z6, since I don't shoot much video or fast action.

        There, decision rationalised lmao

    • My mate in Canada wants the same camera (Z5). How do you like it ?
Did you try the viltrox 85mm 1.8 Z mount lens yet?

        I think it's a really nice camera.

It has great overall image quality. I'm happy with the colours I'm getting (coming from older Fuji and Nikon gear) and I'm happy with the amount of detail it can resolve with the 24-70. That lens does distort a lot (easily correctable), and gets a bit softer in the very extreme corners, but I can't really fault its performance all considered.

The build feels solid and is properly weather-sealed, but still relatively light. I've used it on hikes in heavy rain and snow without any issues.

The controls, ergonomics and interface is also good, all pretty familiar to me coming from Nikon DSLRs. Very snappy in general use. The touchscreen is a nice addition, I use it more than I thought I would. Viewfinder is big and sharp.

In terms of gripes, the AF is only okay. It's certainly not slow, but I don't think its on the same level as the best of the competition.

It's a bit outspecced in terms of video and speed (burst-rates, buffer etc.) which may or may not matter depending on the user. The sensor is also an older design (FSI not BSI), which impacts high-ISO performance somewhat compared to more modern sensors. That stuff doesn't really matter to me, or come up in regular use.

I'd definitely recommend it for users who don't mind those shortcomings, although it does depend a bit on pricing. If the z6 is just a little more, might be worth it to stretch to that. Otherwise, considering it can undercut most enthusiast APS-C cameras I'd say it's a great buy.

Haven't tried the Viltrox, although I've been eyeing it off alongside some of the MF lenses from the likes of TTartisans.

Thanks mate, that was very detailed review and very honest.

So you are saying even the older Nikon Z6 (not the II) is still worth it and way ahead of Z5?

I still have Nikon DSLR and mostly now use Sony A7iii with Tokina 85mm 1.8 AF lens and Tamron 24mm f2.8 lens. I like Sony for its focusing and video capability but at times I do miss Nikon colors on it.

          • @codename47: The z6 is better specced, but I wouldn't say it's way ahead, the differences are relatively small overall. Again, it depends on use case and pricing.

For primarily stills without a focus on fast action/burst, the z5 is basically just as good. For a stills/video hybrid camera, the z6 (ii) is better suited.

DPreview has an excellent review and comparison as usual.

A7 iii is still a great camera, amazing how it's still relevant today. Sony sure knows how to cram in features.

I feel like Nikon has quietly become one of the best value options in FF mirrorless land.

I can say that the Z mount lenses are among the top in term of image quality. But I won't say Nikon is the overall best value considering the high costs of the lenses. Sony FF and the the Lumix S5 would be be better value as their systems cost much less overall, thanks to third party lenses like Sigma and Tamron, and Sony have regular cash back on their gears. Canon RF system is somewhere in between in term of value…
For example you can now get a good deal on the S5 with 12-60 kit lens and bonus 50mm F1.8 for $2750 at Videopro. Try build up a similar kit with the Z6 II will cost you another grand ;-) If you are more serious and add a 24-70mm F2.8, Nikon will set you back 3 grands, a Sigma L-mount for the S5 costs half of that!
      P.S. I own the Nikon Z system.

Interesting take, I hadn't picked the L mount as being cheaper — especially now that Leica is involved haha. Obviously E mount has the advantage of being a much more mature system, with older lenses available discounted/used and plenty of great affordable 3rd party options, so no doubt that would end up cheaper to fill out a system with.

For the lenses I was considering at least, the 24-70 f4 was pretty competitively priced at $730 (I think it outperforms most cheaper kit lenses), and then in terms of primes I've mostly been looking at TTartisan/7Artisan and the like anyway. I do agree that the Nikon 1.8s are relatively expensive.

Only other lens I'm really thinking about is an ultra-wide zoom. The Nikon 14-30 f4 seems about the same as the Panny 16-35 f4, and about $1000 cheaper than the Canon 14-35 f4.

I guess it depends which lenses you pick though, which of course comes down to the photographer. All of the systems are good options really, we're spoiled for choice these days.

I agree you can pick any brand nowadays and still happy with it. So what you choose likely depends on the lens availability and costs. Nikon 24-70 F4 is great value and the quality is among the best in its class. I thoroughly recommend it. The 50mm f1.8 is also great value and one of the best nifty fifty, you can get it under 800. Outside them everything else is costly, I’d need a lot of saving, a long time, to step up to the zoom f2.8, or a Tele zoom lens.

Deal ended, surely someone from amazon backend is monitoring Ozb deals XD

    • Pretty sure Amazon have an algorithm that detects purchasing surges and bumps up the prices automatically.. Either that or simply have a limited stock at that price..

  • You can still get the body only for $1699 and that's what some people are asking used. Comments say it comes with a 64GB XQD card which is good. They're bloody expensive.

  • Can anyone obtained this deal confirm if XQD is included? Someone from dpreview said only 24-70 ftz kit comes with xqd instead of the 24-70 kit

    • Anyone ordered any of the combinations should have received it very soon with Prime, hope able to share what you get :)

      • Was told my order was delayed to late December, awaiting for stock. Don’t think I can get xqd from new stocks. But good any bad, I would prefer newer manufacturing date.

      • we can assume the earlier u order, the more chance u get the XQD

        • +1

64gb XQD in the 24-70 ftz kit box!! So surprising!
