So…a 5 port gigabit switch that's basic, right?

    • +4

Yes, Visually Basic as per the photo. The Assembly and C versions are faster though

  • Hey guys im a networking dummie if anyone can help ; D

I have an Opticom Modem in the garage, that hooks into router in the garage that then connects to a thing that gives connection to other ethernet outlets in the house.

I want to move the router into my pc room, will this help?

Sounds like you can just connect the modem to the "thing", and then hook the router into the ethernet outlets, and then connect your PC to the router without needing one of those. I can be wrong though haven't really used a modem in a while.

Unfortunately not. I have Opticomm too and you can just run from the Opticomm modem to the port that goes to your pc room, but then you lose access to all the other wired ports in your house. My recommendation is to go a mesh wifi system and use the cabled backhaul feature to put one in your garage and another in the pc room. I went the 3 pack TP-Link Deco S4 which does the trick.

Yeah that's exactly what happened, i tried VoidIvory's suggestion and what you said was the outcome.

But yeah cool i'll have a look into that feature as not heard of before, cheers for suggestion

    • Yes, you can do that with this if you need more than one physical port in your PC room. This is a switch - it essentially just a multi-adaptor on a port. You still need a router to separate your home network from the carrier network.

    • If you just need more ethernet ports in your PC room, this will do the job and leave the router where it is. Think of it as turning one ethernet port into four. If you're moving the router to improve WiFi, this obviously won't help.

Thanks. I needed a basic 5 port gigabit switch.

  • I really needed a basic 5 port gigabit switch but this basic 5 port gigabit switch is now out of stock, unfortunately

  • do I need a crossover cord to connect to my router for this one ? thanks.

No, MDI-X is standard for Gigabit ethernet so it will auto-detect for you.
