It's been a long time since a KeepLink switch has been posted and it was popular last time. This one features 8 ports with gigabit PoE (up to 30W each port, 135W PoE budget), 2 gigabit uplink ports and an AU plug. One of the advantages of the two uplink ports is that you can connect to your router and another switch without sacrificing one of the PoE ports.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

    AI switch huh?
I guess my 5 year old managed POE switch is also 'AI'

    • +6

It's the marketing term for PoE Watchdog. Everything is "AI" now.

      • +6

I've got AI toilet flush. It automatically stops the water flow after flushing a tank down.

    • +1

There's a small slide switch with "AI" option that is turned off by default. I'm not sure what it does so I've never turned it on. The device has worked well over the last 6 months.

      • +2

The listing image says it'll detect unresponsive POE device and can reboot the device.

        • Yes, I read that… but if there are no side effects, I'd expect that functionality would either be turned on by default or built-in - after all, most people would buy this for POE devices. I use these for POE devices without turning on that "AI" functionality and haven't had any need to turn it on.

          • +5

@Dinjay: There are obviously side effects, because it's going to reboot your devices if they stop sending any traffic, on the assumption they have crashed.

They might not have crashed and you might not want to do this, hence the manual On/Off.

The 10 port TP-Link has a 61W budget and only 1 uplink and the 8 port is about the same.

      I'd go for the Keeplink

      • -1

People who care about uplink port don't look at 8-10 port switches.

        • What if I have 8 cameras? Uplink port is useful then.

          • @Clear: 8 cameras? I certainly wouldn't worry about 1Gbps uplink. Cameras are not high bandwidth devices. Have you ever watched traffic figures on a network with attached cameras?

People who care about uplink port don't look at 8-10 port switches.

Agreed. People who care about uplink ports for video and know their networking are probably well past the stage of looking at tiny little 8 port switches.

    • I got the $44 one from Amazon. Very happy with it. Unless you need the W I'd opt for the TP-Link for better reliability and warranty.

  • What are the current picks for free OS transaction cards?

Looks like a decent alternative to the tp-link deals that come up often, 2 extra uplink ports and almost twice the PoE power budget at at 135W vs 65W

  • I almost bought this thinking it is 2.5G PoE. I use non PoE 2.5G one for a long time and it works well. I got that for around $70.

  • No cooler fan so quiet.

  • -1

I wouldn't waste my time with a 1 Gbps switch the days. 2.5Gbps minimum. Especially from AliExpress!

    • +13

Why? For things like PoE cameras 1Gbps is ample. Even 100Mbps switches are overkill (not that I’d bother buying one given the extremely small price difference).

      Ie, depends on use case.

      • +1

I'd agree, use case is important. I purchased a 6 port 2.5 Gbps poe switch with two 10 Gbps ports for about $70 from Aliexpress. This powers my WiFi which in no longer limited by a 1Gbps switch. I am slowly getting rid of all 1Gbps stuff…

        • Do you have the link to the switch? Are those 10Gbps ports built in or SFP modules? If SFP, do you also have the link to compatible SFP modules for the switch?

          • @netsurfer: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007037345697.html

The 10Gb ports are SFP+ not SFP, because you can only do 1Gb over SFP.

You don't need an SFP+ transceiver as long as you're going SFP+ to SFP+ because you can just use a cheap Twinax cable instead.

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32977031271.html

These unbranded switches don't need "compatible" transceivers - they'll take anything.

            • -2

@Nom: I need 10Gbps ethernet due to being short sighted and didn't have optical fiber wiring done. I tried a couple of generic 10Gbps ethernet SFP+ modules and they didn't work with the KeepLink switch I have. They work fine with a PC with the ethernet SFP+ modules.

          • @netsurfer: SFP+ port linked to my home server via DAC cable. The other has a 10Gbps ethernet SFP+ port going to wifi 7 AP.

  • So, is Keeplink a good brand?

And what's with their pricing on Aliexpress - I checked their store and they have multiple listings for identical items at various different prices. I was looking at the 8-port 2.5Gbps models and there's prices ranging from around $50 to around $90 for the same item (KP-9000-9XH-X with AU plug).

    • +2

welcome to Aliexpress. I have noticed this with multiple sellers

    • You'll notice this is listing has "Limited Deals" on it. Basically the products in this Choice Store rotate through the Super Deals section of AliExpress.

    • I have the 5 port non-POE version. The switch is okay. Mine came with an instruction booklet for another switch. The main gripe I have is the SFP module slot. I bought a cheap 10Gbps SFP module on AliExpress and appears incompatible (the same module does work with my N100 that has 10Gbps SFP module slots). Not able to find information on compatible SFP modules. KeepLink SFP+ modules on AliExpress are for optical cable and are too expensive.

  • -1

Can someone explain why 2 uplink ports are useful - what do you use the second one for?

    • -1

      The deal already says so

    • +1

You could use the second uplink port to connect to another switch or even a PC. Basically just 2 extra ethernet ports but they don't support PoE.

    • +1

You connect your uplink ports to a core switch, that allows for Link Aggregation Groups (LAG). Basically it allows a link between the switches to be 2Gbps symmetrical.

Core switches are normally the primary link between all networks and sub-networks (Core -> Access switches for example).

  • Thanks OP, been looking for a good small unit for work. 135w is overkill for my needs (just provisioning a bunch of VoIP phones and WAPs) but it’s good to have some extra just in case.

  • Thanks OP nice unit @ a reasonable price

  • Got so damn excited, but realised unmanaged and no sfp :(
I want something like this as a 'media converter'/poe hub for a wifi ap and camera but the camera needs to be on a different vlan

    • They have managed models with SFP.

  • Thanks OP, ordered one.

  • +1

Should be a law that states you cant use the wording AI unless you can prove it does artificial intelligent things and not just a bunch of instructions.

  • stupid question: my wireless router already have enough holes and why do I need a switch?

    • +2

This has Power over Ethernet which eliminates the need to use a separate power cable for certain devices like security cameras and wireless access points as it delivers the power through the ethernet cable.

  • +1

I have a 16 Port version of this switch.

This switch is specifically for POE Devices & IoT to a degree. If you wanted to run a bunch of POE Sensors/Cameras or Raspberri PIs via POE, this would be a good switch to get.

If you want a more reliable, real network switch though, spend the extra money and buy one with a local warranty that's easy to replace and use.
