Upgrade to a Business Class Seat for $32 on Select Domestic Dreamliner Flights @ Jetstar

130

Travel hack!

From 1 December 2021, Jetstar will use Boeing 787s on two daily Melbourne-Sydney flights in each direction. These will be JQ512 & JQ520 from Melbourne to Sydney, and JQ517 & JQ537 from Sydney to Melbourne.

From 17-31 December 2021, Jetstar will temporarily remove its Dreamliners from the Melbourne-Sydney route and use them on flights from Melbourne to Gold Coast and Cairns instead.

But if you’re planning to travel over the summer holidays, there are a bunch of Jetstar routes where the Boeing 787s will make an appearance! From 1 January until 26 March 2022, Jetstar 787s will appear on selected flights on the following routes:

Melbourne-Sydney
Melbourne-Cairns
Melbourne-Gold Coast
Sydney-Cairns
Sydney-Gold Coast
When booking on the Jetstar website, you can check the aircraft type by clicking on “Details” on the flight search results page.

On domestic flights operated by the Boeing 787, Jetstar is opening up the Business Class seats in rows 1-3 for selection as “extra legroom” seats. There is an additional fee for selecting these seats, but it’s only slightly more expensive than the cost of an Economy exit row seat.

On a Sydney-Melbourne flight, for example, it costs just $32 extra to choose one of the Business Class seats. That’s an absolute bargain!

On longer routes like Melbourne-Cairns, the seat selection fee is a slightly higher – but still very reasonable – $45 per passenger.

Good find but it strictly isn’t business class is it? You don’t get all the add ons just a bigger seat. Not saying it isn’t good value but worth noting it won’t be the full business experience.

indeed, clarified title. You need the max bundle to get luggage etc included.

    • Its about flexing to people in cattle class

      • It's Jetstar, it's all cattle class

  • I can't access AFF at work to check, but sounds like is it just an upgrade to sit in a business class seat? Doesn't sound like you would get a business class meal or any other normal perks (although not sure what Jetstar business class usually entails).

    • who blocks AFF???

indeed though, clarified title. You need the max bundle to get luggage etc included.

      • who blocks AFF???

They actually block me, because work has some sort of ad-blocker.

        • that's different. Could you install Firefox portable or something? (just runs from a folder, doesn't need admin privileges)

        • Chrome incognito mode or Tor Browser?

  • I assume it's purely the seat and nothing else? Still a pretty good upgrade considering how cramped the normal seats are.

It sounds so cheap to us but I guess the other angle is that $256 is a still lot for a family of 4 traveling 1hr each way on a budget airline. Would probably double the price of the itinerary. I'd be interested to know the take-up rate!

    • correct. you need the max bundle to get the food etc

Still an awesome hack, thanks for the post!

    • Virgin Economy. You get food

But then again, there's only so much service you can get in a 1-3hr flight

      • +1

Must have been quite some time since you flew Virgin Economy as you don’t get food any more

I bet this is what it costs on a square meter basis on a flight to be in business class. Jetstar are just trying to fill the seats because they must be empty. They won’t be selling at a loss.

People will pay heaps more for a business class seat but in terms of actual cost it’s probably $50 more than economy. The difference goes into profit.

So upgrade now, and don’t do business in the future 🙂

  • whenever I have the option to book these seats with jetstar I do. I usually fly with rex inbetween melb-syd but when I fly jetstar I struggle with how cramped the standard seating is. this is good

    • That 1 inch you lose on jetstar for leg room, you gain 1 inch in width, compared to Rex.

  • I do not normally book seats on the smaller A320, but did book 'front cabin' seats last May when Jetstar said the plane to Gold Coast would be a 'Dreamliner'. Closer to the date I noticed that they changed back to the A320. When I contacted them, they said they would not refund on seat selection, even though booking those same seats were much cheaper on the smaller plane. I did end up winning the argument for a refund though ….. so beware!!
