can someone tell me whats the difference between a router and a modem router? thanks!!

    • One can connect to the internet. One can't.

    • +5

A modem router includes an ADSL modem whereas a router just has a "WAN" connection that is usually used in conjunction with a cable modem, etc.

    • +14

You guys are cold as ice for neging a genuine question

      • -2

a genuine question from a lazy bugger ?

        • -6

People that need to ask should just hire computer technicians to do it for them.

    • +2

In layman terms, a modem-router will accept a cable/DSL internet feed and then share it to your network - a router will only connect to a modem and then share the internet across the network.

Both will obviously create a network which allows communication between supported devices.

      • what's a feed?

in layman terms again, puhleease :)

  • A router allows a connection (ADSL or cable etc to be shared with more than one device. It requires an appropriate modem to be attached via a WLAN socket to work with the internet.

A modem router does not require a separate modem but has to be the correct type for the internet delivery system.

    • If ya wanna get all teknical. A router "routes" information between networks i.e. it sends your information from your home network (LAN) to the internet (WAN). To connect multiple devices on your home network you need a switch (you've got one of those in your home device if it's got LAN ports 1-4 for example). Your modem is the device that talks to your internet service provider using PPPoE (point to point protocol over ethernet)(ISP bigpond for example). Otherwise anyone could just connect a cord to the internet and start using bandwidth.

So once you're modem is configured and you're ISP is allowing the traffic you send to it to go over the internet what happens is

Your PC sends a signal to your switch (probably part of your 1 device), your switch (the point where data is just either passed to other PC's in the network or sent to the router, sends it to your router (the brains of the operating which sends it on to the modem), the modem just passes it on your ISP and their equipment will pass it on if it can.

  • Decent price for wireless N support :-)

    • It's only 150mbps N, but I agree.

It's a shame there doesn't seem to be any supporting evidence it can function as a repeater (or be hacked with alternate firmware to allow so), otherwise I'd grab one.

  • Got a tplink adsl modem only for 32 dollars so this is cheap !

  • Sweet, grabbed one, need to replace my old Netgear

  • Thanks, now i might be able to setup a second wifi to my VPN !
If anyone knows how, please tell me :-)

    • Obviously you need to link it with the first one thru a LAN cable, but if your current router have more than 1 antenna, might consider just extend one of the antenna

  • Hardly Normal!hahaha….

    • +7

      dad?!

      • +1

If it was dad he'd be claiming it as his own joke.

  • can't be used as a bridge :(

    • How do you know this?

Also, is this deal online only, or can you get it in store for that price?

      • -1

        did you click through ?
clear wording "Home delivery or Pick up in-store" and a button for "check store stock"

        • Of course I did. But that doesn't mean anything. Plenty of HN's deals say "Pick up available" but their price is online only.

  • +1

nice..great price. I got this a year ago on sale for $79. This is an insane price and its pretty good. no complaints. maybe a drop out once every 2 months, for about a min each time…. then again it might be TGP and not the modem.

  • Can you use this a Ethernet Switch?

Example - Run the ethernet cable from main modem/router to this one, plug it into the yellow input and the other 4 can be used to feed the connect to devices?

Also with the above example, will it also boost your wifi range?

    • It should be able to be used as an ethernet switch. You can choose to use either the wireless in your other router or in this one. Not both.

      • Thanks, so just using it as a switch will turn off the wireless part

    • +2

If you want to use it as a non-routing switch, just disable DHCP and do not use the WAN port. Connect one of the other 4 LAN ports to your router. No problem having 2 separate wireless access points on the same LAN.

    • Should work fine but you'll have to disable the DHCP server and plug the computers into the 4 ports. I'm pretty sure the WAN port will not work.

    • just buy a switch already, they're probably even cheaper than this!

  • +1

Can use this as a dumb wireless Access Point?

    • I use to have a Belkin wireless router, it has a "pass through?" function in Wireless option, when select it, the wireless router basicly become a AP….

      • I don't see this option in the manual for this particular router :(

    • I can confirm yes. Copied straight from router web interface:
"ADVANCED FEATURE! The Router can be configured to act as strictly an Access Point, bypassing all of the routing and firewall functions. To do so, select "Enable" and type in the IP address you want the Access Point to have."

  • What speed are the ethernet ports and how many does it have?

If it doesn't have gigabit its useless to me :(

    • DOES THIS HAVE GIGABIT OR NOT??

      • +12

        NO IT DOES NOT!!

        • yeh i checked online, bugger, good buy but i stream HD over the Lan ports, Wifi for the portable devices, oh wells.

        • +2

100Mbps should be more than enough for HD video unless you are after uncompressed HD but I'm pretty sure not even gigabit has the bandwidth for that.

        • 100Mbps = 10Mbytes/second (roughly) = 36 Gbytes/hour.

If you have a dual-layer blu-ray disk (50Gbytes) that plays for 90 minutes, that's 33Gbytes/hour. A little slower than the 100Mbps ethernet connection.

Gigabit is certainly faster when copying large files from one PC to another, but 100Mbps should be fast enough for streaming.

        • @Russ..you have to account for overhead.

        • 10Megabits/s not bytes. That is just Bandwidth, the actual amount of usable data sent over that might be %60 if you're lucky. Think of it like USB where they tell you USB2.0 speeds are 480Mb/s try copying a file over to your directly connected ssd which has 500mb/s transfer speed and the file will not transfer that quickly. Information is being sent constantly to make sure the connection is up, data hasn't been corrupted when sent, physical addresses match, etc.

        • Here's a report of someone achieving 9.9Mbytes/sec over 100Mbit ethernet, see the reply from Bob Willard, saying "I get ~9.9 MB/s pushing a large file":
          http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/actual-throughput-100mbps-s…

Copying a single large file will give much better results than copying a large number of small files. The windows file system is often the hold-up, you will see the same slow-down copying from one HDD to another HDD.

          Streamed video is large files.

  • Anyone have an opinion on the modem router version at $35?

I'm due to replace my old Netgear (like someone else posted above) and this seems like a good price but there's really nothing wrong with the old one - although N will allow me to bump up my ADSL speed as I'm currently not utilising the fastest it can go (have the plan throttled down to deal with my old modem router that was designed before ADSL2+

That said, I'd always thought that when I get around to getting new gear I'd get one that has a USB input for adding an external drive to the nextwork. At $35, maybe I can overlook that though…

    Thoughts people?!

  • PS. Can you pick up the router instore at this price? Doesn't look like "online only" - I know I can purchase and pickup if not.

  • just ordered 2, pickup in store.. $18 great price for extending signal from back to front!! and a lll around the house! lol

    • How do you do that? Do you mean having two WiFi hotspots at different corners of the house?

    • it doesn't function as a bridge/extender

  • The biggest problem with this router is dropouts

    http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F7D1301-Wireless-Router/dp/B003…

    • Dont tell me this after i ordered already :(
      Maybe firmware update fixable ..

      • its only $18, can u go wrong?

        • Worst case is $18 badly spent.

      • Most of the reviews stated that a firmware update fixed most the problems…

  • Wish it was N300, my Belkin at home is 300 so using this as a ranger booster would be no good correct?

  • +1

We had one modem one a little while back and it did drop out a fair bit. Found out it was the 20 or so other networks in the apartments competing. Changed the channel and it improved. Moved out to the sticks and its good as gold.
Its $5.95 delivery to me in regional NSW so i brought it as a backup and the camera as well. Total 78.95 (38+35+5.95)

  • haha is this good enuff to replace my dodgy Netgear DG834GT or should i save my money to get a Billion 7300N

    so tempting…..cheers

    • +1

That's what I've got and thinking of replacing but not sure it's good enough - and I'm just being sucked in by the price.

Note, you have to get the $35 version - the router alone (@ $18)won't replace your Netgear.

    • I've just ordered the $35 one to replace my Netgear DG834GT too. I was having problems with Skype dropping out and forums are pointing me to a problem that relates to my Netgear modem. I use my Apple Airport Extreme for wireless connection anyway so as long as it fixes my Skype issue, I am happy!

    • I'm getting one to replace my unreliable Billion.

  • +1

Remember the 'N150' is not a real standard, is certainly not 802.11n, and does not generally work between different brands.
Your N devices will probably only connect at -G speeds, unless they use the same brand chipset.

    • But the specs specifically state 802.11n.

    • +1

"N150" is just a short-hand way of saying it is 802.11n, and supports speeds of up to 150Mbps. Most 802.11n devices support either 150Mbps, 300Mbps, 450Mbps or 600Mbps - each step up in speed adds complexity to the router, and that makes the faster ones more expensive.

I'm not entirely sure I've got it correct, but here is a rough breakdown:
802.11g (the older wifi standard) achieved 54Mbps over a 20MHz-wide channel.
802.11n at 150Mbps uses a single 40MHz channel, twice as wide as 802.11g.
Better 802.11n devices can do 300Mbps, by using two simultaneous 40MHz streams on different frequencies. The 2.4GHz band is just barely wide enough for two 40MHz streams, if you use the entire band. Such devices have two antennas, one for each stream.
The best 802.11n devices can do 450Mbps or 600Mbps, by using three or four streams. These devices have three or four antennas, and must be dual-band because the 2.4GHz band is only wide enough for two streams.

Feel free to correct me, I'm not entirely sure this is correct.

Router sucks, but why does it have to be so cheap…

  • just picked it up. Everything seems ok BUT can't hold a wireless connection for more than 5seconds on my Galaxy Tab. All other wireless devices are fine.

    • eww, never a good sign for the future when strange things happen with a router.

  • ……

    • ?
Still having problems? I saw what you wrote before you edited it off.

      • Yup, unfortunately it only worked once and it's now back to dropping out. It's not even random, it keeps disconnecting every 40-50seconds or so. May be a quirk with the Galaxy Tab as all my other devices work fine.

  • Thanks supercheap1. Picked up one of these this afternoon and so far all is working well. Using mine as an access point to fill a wireless black spot in the house.

    • people above say it doesnt work as a bridge/repeater?

      • Working fine for me. In the settings just enable access point, assign an ip address, reboot the device and away you go

        • acorn mind sharing how u did it? I enabled Access Point then changed the IP address but that is all I can do. I guess it function as an access point but I still need to run cable to the router rite? So really it wont work as a range extender?

        • @andrew81 correct

    • If you use it as an access point, can you plug wired things into it and have those wired devices be able to access your main network?

      • yes

  • Refrained from placing an order during the day but ended up picking one up on the way home from work - too tempting to overlook at $35. Sticker on the box said $129.

Girl at the register originally thought I was joking when I said it's supposed to be $35.

    Haven't opened it yet.
