Stumbled upon the code. Still can't believe I found this. Historical low for a top end premium laptop. Stocks are very low so get in quick.

Yes, this is overpriced; Yes, you are paying a lot of premium for the rog name and the second touch screen that wont be useful to most people; Yes, the 3.9k L7P deal (cheers dealbot!) will have better performance at least gaming wise; And yes, despite all this, it is still a hell of a deal. Lets make it clear: this laptop have always been short of stock-not just in aus but all round the world-and as far as I know there have never been any sort of sale with this laptop, ever. Due to how unique it is and how low a stock it have, its almost always sold out very quick.

Its now avalible, in the most powerful configuration-with the updated 5980hx (better binned and better clock speeds) chips instead of 5900hx on previous models with a code that takes 500$ off. What can I say? If you always wanted this laptop, there is no better time.

  • That 2nd screen, not sure if it's going to be very helpful or end up a hinderance

    • But it does look cool

    • +2

Depending on your usecase, it came range from very helpful to none at all. Definitely useful, if you work with the adobe suite of software, or wanted to draw something on the 2nd screen. Its also good for when you are typing away withm the document down the second screen and you can use the main monitor to lookup stuff without having to alt tab around. If you are gaming, you can have discord or something else open in the second screen or even have OBS and twitch chat down there.

Definitely a luxury that may be hard to justify-when you can just buy an external monitor for far cheaper the price of the premium of the second monitor-but again on the other hand you wont be able to carry it around as freely.

Pretty awesome for mobile game streaming.

  • Just noticed it has 16GB DDR6 RAM for the GTX 3080. I don't think I've seen desktop versions of the same card hosting 16GB of RAM.

    • +4

Yes. RTX 3080 mobile cards come in either 8gb or 16gb vram.

      • What's pushing more frames - VRAM above and beyond 8Gs, or an 3080 that's hamstrung to a 115W undervolt?

Saw a Lenovo deal earlier with a 130W 3060 for ~40% the asking price here. How close are they for raw computational power?

        • +5

For gaming, the 16gb of vram is more than overkill. its for productivity workloads that the extra vram actually matters.

In addition, this 3080 actually have the same tgp as the lenovo 3060, both are '130w' with 15w coming from the dynamic boost-meaning more juice will go to the GPU, if the CPU do no need that much power.

As for performance difference, Im afraid it will largely depend on workload, here is the notebookcheck comparison based on 13 different 3080/3060 mobile benchmarks.

  • If it weren't for the weird looking keyboard and setup, I would be very tempted to pull the trigger.

    • +2

The keyboard is actually fine to type on or when gaming, the included wrist rest helps as well. As for the touchpad-i just use it in numpad while I use a mouse.

Definitely very bad ergonomics if you plan on using the touchpad, however.

  • Those specs in a lappy chassis make my eyes bleed. The exhaust of that thing could boil my tea 🔥

    • boil my tea

You can boil egg or make scramble egg

    5 k …. I can buy 2 MSI FLIP or lenovo 2 in 1 LOL

    • +2

Hmm, some might argue the use cases for that comparison is not applicable.

Maybe closer to argue that $5K might get you a nice ultrabook, eGPU, and monitor. That might push more pixels / higher frames without scorching your fingers.

And I can build 2 high end PC's + buy 1 Microsoft Surface.
      Gaming + Mobility

    • I mean I can buy like 5 steam decks with that money too but the use case is different.

  • I just have to wait a few years for it to drop to $2k

    • Sold out. I feel people have so much more money than me or they have no fear of spending. Come to think of it I'm probably affected by both.

  • And people go on about dropping $5K on a new M1 Max MacBook Pro

  • Thanks for the informative write-up op.

Let's face it this is a niche product. Most obvious use case that comes to mind is video editing, I'd love a portable workstation with a second screen showing my timeline.

But apart from those creative applications it seems overkill.

    • Ineed. There is actually cheaper 5900hx/3070 (4099$ aud rrp) or 5800h/3060 versions of this laptop. But only the former is avalible in australia and its sold out nearly as soon as a new shipment is in stock.
