if you have a Costco membership you get 600 for $199

    https://www.costco.com.au/Home-Furniture/Occasions/Christmas…

I have these on a 7 foot tree and I think if you want the full effect 600 would be the minimum you need.

    • Similar but not the same, it was discussed in the original thread.

    • Do you notice the absence of white /warm white leds on the tree? That's the only reason we didn't grab them… We prefer the warm-white leds twinkling away.

      • You can set them to any colour you want.l you can choose ice white/blue or yellow warm..

      • It's only the special edition that is rgbw this version is only RGB, pretty much identical to the Costco ones.

They will have to do a better price than this I think.

Half decent price, can be had for similar locally with gift cards at places like harvey norman.

Here's my previous post with some more info.

Cheapest I've been able to find in Australia, $243ish with 6% off through RACQ (arrived instantly) and the like.
    A note from Wiser
Buy the Myer gift card from Woolworths by tomorrow to get extra 10%of value
    Bringing the total to $233.91.
These probably aren't most customers cup of tea but might be useful to some.
    $275-$285 elsewhere.

I began looking for Twinkly branded lights after seeing this lumations post at costco. 600 LEDs was honestly too many for our 7ft tree and these weren't much more than the Topmart comment from Nukkels at $238 (though less LEDs), but apparently brighter.
If you don't know about twinkly lights i encourage you to read the above post from Jklaro.

Here is a brief video demostrating how they work (on a pre lit twinkly tree, but their prelit trees are just pre strung with string lights).

After receiving them, they are great. No complaints.

    • 600 is the minimum amount you would want for the light effects to look good. We have 600 on a 7ft Aldi tree and honestly I would probably add 200 more if I had the chance..

      • 400 on our 7ft tree looks like more than enough and that's with the lights all the way around

      • I totally agree. I just got the 600 set and while it looks great next year I will only go around the front half of the tree. I think you would need between 900-1200 to get the best effect.

        • Now you're making me doubt myself, i thought 400 looked good. Although for us they were meant to be the background, not the feature.

I laughed at the price until I watched that video.

  • This might not be the place to ask, but does anyone know if these LED strings by Twinkly (plus the Lumation ones from the earlier Costco deal) are hackable in the sense that they could be controlled by an arduino, say? I've done a bit of a web search and nothing has come up.

Likely you could do both, but easiest I suspect would be the Lumation ones as they appear to be 4 wire ws2801 type leds (which would be ground, power, clock and data). Can't confirm as haven't arrived yet. Anyhow, that's why I got a set of Lumation lights from Costco because I thought that worse case (eg they look rubbish on the tree, my wife hates them etc) I can always repurpose the lights and the total cost is not much more than just buying them separate from Aliexpress. Not sure what the Twinkly ones are - they could even be three wire jobs with the comms running via serial…. dunno, but at nearly twice the price for the same number of lights I doubt I'd want to try to hack them and maybe end up with expensive land fill. ;-)

      • Fantastic! Thanks so much for the info. I'll seriously consider getting the Costco Lumation ones in that case, both because of the included power supply and also for the fact that it's local. (I'm wondering about using it to create an 8x8x8 or maybe 9x8x8 "LED cube" by stringing it up in an appropriate frame. But I need to be able to control each LED for this to be even worth considering.)

Edit: I'll add that I found an API for working with the Twinkly LEDs - https://xled-docs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html
It seems that there is a "real-time" mode for displaying frames via a wifi link.

No problem & have fun. FWIW I'd suggest just ordering a handful of ws2801 leds - should be able to get about 50 of them cabled together for under $20 or so delivered from Aliexpress, maybe a little less with the upcoming "11/11" sales with vouchers. If you're willing to solder them up yourself (and if you are trying to put them into a cube you will almost certainly need to do that), then expect to be able to get maybe 100 for under $20 - so enough for a cube would be about $100. Quick search and here's an example: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32713415299.html. Will of course take a while to arrive, but you can then experiment with them before thinking about chopping up the Lumations thing.

      • FYI the lumations ones are 2 wire led's just like the twinkly ones.

        • Interesting. Normally these things are three or four wire, but if they are two then they must be using data & +ve on one wire, and vss/gnd on the other. Less wire makes them less bulky so not only saves money on cable but also makes them more discrete as decorations. Also might make them a little trickier to repurpose, but not impossible. From the photos of the Lumations kit they definitely looked four wire but I guess I'll find out when mine arrive next week! :-)

@PlasticSpaceman: I've got the lumations and I can tell you they are 2 wire. It looks like 4 wires because the wires go upto the led then return to continue the string. This is then heat shrinked around the base of the led. There is also a 3rd wire but this just goes to the other end of the string, maybe injecting voltage at the other end so they don't dim? They run on a 24v power supply and are 2 strings of 300 leds. I was worried they would be dim from other comments but they are very bright. Mine are set to about 50% brightness in the app and they look great! If you manage to hack them let me know! I was initially going to try and DIY some smart lights but at the price of the lumations from Costco it wasn't worth it. I couldn't find much info on what the protocol was for signalling the LEDs. This was about as much as I could find: https://www.avrfreaks.net/forum/what-kind-leds-are-these-twi…

            • @masuta: OK - so mine arrived today. They appear to be 3 wire WS2811 type LEDs. The 600 LEDs are split into two runs of 300 LEDs. Each run has five wires, and each LED has four wires going in/out except for the last which just has the three. Each LED would only need three (+V, Gnd, and signal), and I couldn't be bothered tracing the cables, but they no doubt run more cable to balance the load over the run - at maybe about 0.3W per LED a run of 300 LEDs would draw 90W over fairly thin wire, so spreading that out makes a lot of sense. So end result is I expect that they could be repurposed if you wanted to, although I'm pretty happy with how they work on our tree so I doubt I'll touch 'em unless the controller ever dies.

              • @PlasticSpaceman: I'm confused now as to what you have. I have 4 wires coming out of the controller. 2 wires going to one strand and another 2 wires going to the second stand. From memory (my lights are wrapped around the tree currently) the 1st led has 2 wires going in and 3 wires going out. The 3rd wire does not connect to subsequent leds. I will post some photos tomorrow. If these were 3 wire led's you would need to have 6 wires at each Led - 3 in and 3 out to continue the strand. ie you would need to have 3 wires between every led. My lumations only have 2 wires between each Led.
