[VIC] Midweek Melbourne Money Dining Initiative: 30% Rebate with $50-$500 Spend on Monday-Thursday @ City of Melbourne

3100

The $5million fund is almost all used up which means Midweek Melbourne Money will finish at 11.59pm Tuesday 30 November 2021.

You can still dine on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 November 2021 to claim 30 per cent off your bill when you spend between $50 and $500 in Melbourne’s cafes, restaurants and bars.

You’ll be able to submit outstanding receipts up to 11.59pm on Thursday 2 December 2021.

Melbourne Money will return on Monday 15 November.

This time around you will be able to claim 30 per cent back on your bill when you spend between $50 and $500 in Melbourne’s cafes, restaurants and bars between Monday and Thursday, with a maximum rebate of $150* per customer across the life of the program.

The first round of Melbourne Money was hugely successful in activating our city and helping footfall bounce back.

Repeated lockdowns have impacted weekday trading in the city so we are encouraging city workers, residents and visitors to come and help bring the buzz back to the city during the week.

The rebate won’t be available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday dining. The offer will be on a first-in-first-served basis until funds are exhausted.

The rebate is available across the entire municipality including Southbank, Chinatown, Lygon Street, Docklands, North Melbourne and Kensington and at hospitality venues within sporting, arts and theatre precincts.

Midweek Melbourne Money will be served up from Monday 15 November. The scheme applies to all restaurants, cafes and bars where meals are served across the municipality, and will continue until funds are exhausted.

Melbourne Money is being offered through the $200 million Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund – a joint partnership with the Victorian Government.

        • Butcher Shop Cafe is great.

    • +10

North Melbourne is in the city melb though.

      • Eligible for the vouchers, yes!

      • -5

        I'm referring to Brunswick/ Preston

        • +2

Fair enough. I read it as the suburb as usually people call that inner north rather than north Melbourne.

          • -4

@gottacatchemall: My bad. I'm just a little annoyed as we are reopening the borders in the near future the most central business will benefit the most. So maybe have some focus on local areas too.

Not to mention doesn't that encourage people to all hang out in the city - spreading the virus easier?

            • +8

@Perrino: It's a council initiative though, not state government. You can hardly expect the City of Melbourne council to subsidise other council areas?

Maybe suggest to your council (City of Moreland) to do something similar?

              • @mfazackerley: It’s a joint initiative between the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne

            • +2

@Perrino: Meh, the burbs have been far less hit than the city due to WFH.

        • Oh northern Melbourne

    • -7

And you know who’s the majority having the businesses or restaurants in the CBD area nowadays.

      • +1

        No, who?

        • Ask who negate my comment, because apparently he can see and read the signages in front of the restaurants

          • @brongz: Clearly those who negate your comment can read English, that's why they negged it?

          • +1

@brongz: Seriously, I don't know what you are saying here? Who do you mean?

            • +2

@King Tightarse: I'm guessing something sadly racist. Some people are so insecure.

              • +1

@a22andrew: Suspected the same, but apparently not brave enough to actually say it.

    • +1

Yea ok no one is actually forcing you to support anyone.

    • So instead you're indirectly supporting overpriced inner north real estate?

  • +22

I really do hope this boosts foot traffic and spending in the city.

The businesses have been smashed by constant lockdowns and need all the help we can give them.

    • +12

Problem now is that the city (CBD) truly looks like a ghetto. For lease signs everywhere, shops closed up.
I'm more for supporting the local neighbourhood cafes and restaurants now.

      • +24

It will get worse if you don't support it. Not to say don't support your local.

          • +25

@diddy50: We can only hope to undo the damage the pandemic has caused to them

              • +15

@diddy50: Let's also not forget that some of outbreak were originated from individual behaviours. Not everything that the government does is screwd up.

              • +29

@diddy50: Mate this Government didn't just lockdown for nothing, it was in the middle of a pandemic. Yes our businesses got hurt, but we will recover. Dead people will not.

There's a reason we have one of the lowest death rates into he world. Go out and support businesses in the city and local area.

              • -4

@jaimex2: In fairness, we can't get rid of him til the election happens which only will happen when the Labor Bracks government legislate it happen- every four years. But looks like the DanBots are out in force.

          • +5

@diddy50: Yes the Morrison/LNP lockdowns because of Morrison's incompetence in getting vaccines and managing quarantine has been extremely costly across Australia.

You can't undo the Morrison lockdowns but you can prevent more damage by voting Labor or Greens or any party that doesn't preference the lying Liberals.

            • @arcticmonkey: Victoria has had more lockdowns than any other place in the world, including NSW, which has had similar numbers of outbreaks and was towards the same numbers of cases. Now its health system is at breaking point because the State Government can't manage it, nor the health department whose contract tracing remains woeful, and has lied about spending on ICU beds which it said it committed but "committed" is a weaselword unless you actually BUILD the BEDS.

If your theory was actually true then every state would be evenly impacted.

      • +1

How can a business earn money if they are forced to close? Hmmmm

      • +2

How do you define 'earn a lot'?

Do you know that affected busineses still has to pay rental when their business is shut? Also these business owners are also human and may have a family to feed too.

I agree the subsidy is a good amount to help cover their living expenses but I definitely wouldn't think they 'earn a lot' from government subsidy.

Them being business owner is not too different from those being employed. Them business owners also pay tax like the regular taxpayers. They usually spend their time, skills and effort in exchange for money, and when their business are shut it's the same as a regular employed staff being unemployed. It might be worse for some business owner if they got a loan to set up their business.

Please put yourself in their shoes before making such comment

        • Lol…
Your imagination is limited by your knowledge.

          • @areuSure: Thanks for the comment. I'd rather that than having my knowledge limited by my imagination

You can continue to think small business 'earn' a lot from subsidies. May be try opening a small business your self.

            • @b0b0: I have :).
Anyway, we're just obeying the rules. Instead of complaining, learn how to survive.
Australia is a beautiful country that provides epidemic subsidies. Have u seen eight restaurants shut down because of the pandemic in other countries? Their government didnt provide any assistance, even rental reduction. Even so, they held up two rounds of lockdown through food delivery, gift box during the festival or anything that they can make money to survive.
Or have you seen opened three new companies only for a subsidy in Vic?
Sorry, this is the last time to reply to the comments. May everyone survive this outbreak. :)

              • @areuSure: Well said. That still doesn't show the small business on the verge of closing down is earning 'a lot' in the midst of outbreak

Elsewhere in the world, their government may not be sucking up as much tax as Australia. But any way, I will also stop here as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so far, they just show how much you don't think in others' shoes.

  • +1

The rebate won’t be available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday dining.

  • "The scheme applies to all restaurants, cafes and bars where meals are served across the municipality…" Much better than the last one that was super restricted. Hopefully gives people a chance to get back together again.

    • +15

Did you even open the link? It's a Melbourne City Council initiative.

      • It’s a joint initiative between the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne

    • +22

Have you been to CBD recently? The lack of office workers has significantly decreased the number of people dining in the CBD.

Just because restaurants/cafes owners decides to set up in CBD, doesn't automatically put them in the 'overpricing dining' category. There are also small business too, they are also suffering.

      Have some compassion maybe?

    • +3

It’s a City of Melbourne council initiative. Speak to your local council and ask them to support such initiative please.

I stand corrected but I wouldn’t think it’s tax payers money directly funding these promotions? I would have thought City of Melbourne fundings come mainly from council rate collection. As city apartment owner council rates are still payable during pandemic. I see this as a good use of funding to support city business, and also allow city-siders some tiny rebate for living in the city :)

P/s: are city dining generally being overpriced or were you referring to just a few of them? I see coffee prices being similar in both City and Suburbs

    • They specifically want people to come back in to the CBD

  • -1

Why not run across melb and include regional vic? All small restaurants across vic suffered from lockdown. Would rather spend locally than going to city

    • +18

This is a City of Melbourne council initiative, all the other councils are free to do their own programs - it's just that I doubt they will

      • +3

Actually it’s a joint initiative between the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne. Hopefully the Victorian Government can give other councils support for this initiative also.

    • +1

No other council can afford such an initiative

      • +2

Source? There are 78 other councils in Victoria. I know my council is supporting businesses in other ways such as waiving certain license fees.

    • +10

It's almost like the CBD has been disproportionately affected by workers staying home, and the CoM wants to entice people back.

Spend locally if you want, no one's stopping you. You're just not entitled to a rebate.

      • +2

Bingo. Weird flex for people to get upset about this, but it's absolutely true - the CBD has had the biggest drop in custom, with that trade often moving to suburban cafes as people WFH.

  • Can not find which city suburbs are included in the offer.. need more info

  • -3

Now, we should demand the government increase train service frequency to/from the CBD.

    • +11

Lol, I live along a train line and during ALL lockdowns they have maintained constant trains… With nobody on them.

Trains every 5 to 10 mins (both directions) - same schedule as usual

  • Can I use my Gourmet Restaurant Gift Cards ?

    • +4

Don't see why not. Last time this was on I saved the maximum amount both for my partner and I and stacked with liven/entertainment book. Just ask for a receipt after your using your discounts and paying then claim the melb money online.

      • Cool that will get me to about 2/3 off :)

        • Where did you get gourmet restaurant gift cards for 30% off?

    • +2

Likely, as it's a rebate scheme. As long as you can provide a receipt showing a minimum $50 spend and the other valid criteria (similar to the ATO Tax Invoice guidance) from a valid place, you should be able to receive the rebate.

However, I haven't found the full T&Cs yet and not even the ones from the previous promotion. This is the best I can find so far https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/SiteCollectionDocuments/mid…

  • +5

Does this work for Crown Casino restaurants too?

    • +1

Yeah definitely does. I went to Gradi multiple times the last time this was open and had no issues.

  • -1

Apparently some in Victorian Government work for (above the law) Crown.

So it's quite likely that this will also work for joints in Crown Casino.

  • -3

City of Melbourne needs a new Lord Mayor.

    • +4

Whats wrong with the current one?

    • +15

Supporting local businesses impacted by lockdowns? What a dick move right!

      • +1

Doesn’t support local ratepayers who deserve a rent subsidy who battled out Covid while living in the city.

        • Live near the city and pay a premium, where's the line?

    • +1

      Why?

  • +5

Been looking forward to this! Combine with your Liven 50% off Fooddollar packages and get 80% off meals. :D

  • +1

unfortunately weekday parking costs negate most savings

    • Go weeknights for cheaper parking

    • +5

      Public transport?

    • Crown Casino I assume the parking costs peanuts in some sections like the past .

    • +1

Weeknight parking is usually cheap after 4pm, so good for dinner

    • $5 after 4pm

  • I wonder if this will work for take away

    • +10

Customers can only claim their 30 per cent back on takeaway that is ordered either in person, online or by phone. However, the takeaway must be collected in-venue, they must spend a minimum of $50 per order and be provided with a physical receipt to lodge their claim. The customer cannot make a claim on food ordered through home delivery companies such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo. They cannot also make a claim on food purchased from businesses classified as convenience stores or supermarkets.

      • +1

        Thanks. I couldn't find the t&c

  • +14

It was a very successful rollout for the last Melbourne Money Scheme. Uploaded the receipts and we got our money back in the account usually within 2-3 business days, very simple process. The scheme lasted quite a while from memory before it ran out (3-4 weeks?)

Not sure if it works for takeaway this time though but last time it did (pickup only)

It’s a great initiative to bring people back to CBD & support the amazing restaurants and cafes in Melbourne!

    • +1

It lasted longer than I think they expected as another lockdown also got called towards the end.

  • +2

Is this just for VIC residents?, was thinking about making a trip for a week to Melbourne, this might push it over the edge.

    • +1

My sister came to visit from NSW and claimed during the last round in June. She was successful. From memory the form doesn't ask much of your personal details apart from email. It mainly asks for the details of the establishment you dined at

    • +2

Most likely open to anyone. They didn’t check your address when you submit claims the last time

  • Site not loading

    • +1

Not a good sign that it’s not even available yet and the site has gone down.

  • If I make online booking and pay now, but the dinner session doesn't start until 18th Nov can I still claim?

I assume my tax invoice will have today's date.

    • +1

If the restaurant is willing to issue a receipt dated 18 Nov then should be fine

    • Can I make a claim for pre-purchased dining packages?

Yes, if the date of dining falls within the program delivery period. You will need to request an itemised receipt at the time of dining from the restaurant. In order to make an eligible claim you must upload the receipt from the time of dining with your claim submission.

  • +1

    Thanks op.

  • +1

Does anyone know if I can use gourmet traveller and good food giftcards in the same transaction?

  • Is there an end date or does it just run until the allocated funds run out?
