Best Lawn Mowers for Bigger Yards?

Hi all,

Was looking to buy a lawn mower for the old man and myself to use, the yard is around 300/350sqm. I was looking at something self propelled so that my old man has an easier time mowing when I'm not around. The current budget is under $750, I want something that'll last a longish while at least but I'm not well versed in the lawn mower market in terms of the optimal engine size, brand etc. Because of the structures, fences and budget a ride on would be out of the question.

I was looking at this, Yard Force Self Propelled 166cc Honda Engine Lawn Mower 21" as a decent target that ticks the boxes but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

See if you can get a HRU216 second hand for a good price from a non-mowing contractor (i.e a home user)

Best Lawn Mowers for Bigger Yards?

    Husqvarna zero turn ride on

    current budget is under $750

    Dang son!

    • Definitely plus one for the Husky! We have one and it gets the mowing done in a snap. Downside - you do need to have somewhere to store it.

      • Yeah unfortunately due to fences/gates, structures and now that you mention it storage, can't go for any form of ride-on.

Save up a little more and buy an EGO self propelled mower. Your lawn, and your old man, will love you for ever.

    EGO POWER+ 56V 1 X 5.0AH 420MM SELF-PROPELLED MOWER KIT LM1704E-SP $849

    • Thanks for the suggestion, just having a look at this I noticed the cutting deck is only 42cm/16ish inches would this still be OK/efficient for a larger lawn? I've kind of been just looking at 21" mowers for this reason.

Buy a Petrol. EGO mowers are crap. I have one and use a 30 year old smoker instead.

      • What issues have you had with your EGO mower askme69?

        How old is it?

Reason I'm asking is I have an EGO 52cm self-propelled mower, now discontinued. I'd like to be prepared for when it runs out of warranty.

      • what is wrong with EGO?

  • Due to the humidity and wet weather in Brissy I would try to get an allot deck on the mower as it will not rust and last a heck of allot longer than a steel deck.

You may also want to get an electric start for your dad as he is not getting nay younger and may not be able to start it in a few years depending on his age etc.

    • Thanks for the advice Andy, I'll have to keep my eye out for electric starters where possible didn't even consider it.

      • Some electric start mowers don't come with chargers, so ask about that when you look.

  • "Includes self propelled mulch plug"

I saw this and was a bit confused by this wording, is it saying the mulching plug is the only form of self propulsion? The rest of the listing just states self propelled so I assumed it was just a bonus thing?

All I can see in my head when I read it is a mulching plug marching around the yard by itself.

  • Two-stroke engine, just add oil to unleaded petrol

  • Just get an electric mower and get your kids to do it

  • My yard is 350m2 of mowed grass (yes, measured). Can do the lot with a 36v cordless with 5ah battery and a 42cm cut.

With a higher budget I’d probably get an Ego mower.

Get a cordless self propelled, but with a bit more power than 36v.

    • My 30 year old worn out 2 stroke smoker has more power than my EGO and cuts better with 2 x blunt/dodhy blades.

True petrol has more power, but is also noisier, smellier, more polluting, harder to start, heavier and requires more maintenance. I’ll put up with the slight reduction in power for all the advantages. Haven’t filled a jerry can for home use for years.

Me too. There aren't any major disadvantages in going electric that I can see and many advantages.

I'll try again. It blocked me because I put a link to the mower I just bought.

It is the Giantz 22" 220cc one. Do NOT get this one for $450. It has several issues:

    • Engine / blades not as capable as the 220cc suggests as it died several times doing my small front lawn.
    • Each time it died I had to go under it and reset the positions of the 4 blades which had all rotated and retracted across the hub. You have to use some force to bend them up and over the shape of the next blade to set them all out again. If you don't, then when you restart it the engine surges badly and the whole thing rocks at high speed like it is going to break itself apart. It's quite frightening.
    • The hose-attachment washing feature doesn't seem to really do anything. There is also no section about it in the manual.
    • Thanks for the review transport, honestly steering clear of any online no name brands because of stuff like this. Would rather pay a bit more coin for something recognisable from a physical store.
